After an awesome weekend break at the gothic themed Bats and Broomsticks in Whitby I now insist upon eating all my breakfasts in a candlelit cellar to the strains of Sisters of Mercy. You may never have tried that before but once you have you will wonder how you ever breakfasted any other way. I'm feeling all dark and Mistressy just thinking about it. So to review. I believe I can sum this up neatly by saying that this warm, welcoming and quirky B&B just up the road from the heart of Whitby is PERFECT for you if you can say 'yes' to any or all of the following: 1) When I say 'Amelia' by The Mission you immediately start singing it in your head. 2) At any point in your life you have spent a weekend ruining the new DMs your badgered Mother finally bought you, to just the right degree of 'aged distress'. 3) You've ever picked holes in the cuffs of your school jumper to thrust your thumbs through. 4) You can air guitar to Alice Cooper's 'Poison'. 5) You have ever drawn spider webs on the corners of your eyelids. 6) Your father/mother/grandfather/grandmother has ever exclaimed you look like you are 'going to a funeral'. 7) You have ever deliberately sat in the shade on a sunny day drinking Cider and referring to those playing in the sunlight as 'The Others'. 8) You still refer to anyone as a 'Norm'. 9) You know what Stargazer Pitch Black is. 10) You have ever owned a dress or shirt made of crumpled velvet. Walkers cut through this site to walk the cliffs into whitby or robin hoods bay. the caravans are all new and well maintained. There are a few to let but most are privately owned. It's been going some 20 years this year. About 3 or 4 thousand turn up & have a great time. The local community welcome the bikers in pubs & shops without issue, although I'm sure the volume of the music is an issue for some. The site itself is in a nice location with a small but perfectly formed castle nestling in the trees. Open fields surround the caravan/ holiday home areas. The castle has the amenities located within ie bars & food. The site is located in the area of weardale & teesdale, perfect for visiting local attractions & the city of Durham. I would certainly recommend it both for the bike rally & a place to take a vacation.

There wasn't any paid towels or napkins in case of spills. You have to pay £10 to use the indoor pool for an hour only and it's only reserved for you at that time, so no chance of meeting other people and kids to play in the pool with. The BEST thing about this apartment is the coffee shop across the street. Lush Coffee is highly recommended no matter where you are in Whitby!!

The staff are all very welcoming and pleasant at all times and made our stay there a real pleasure. The breakfasts (08.30 10.00) are, at the moment, £6 extra per head per day, but I would strongly recommend them to anyone staying here. The Full English is exactly what it says and kept two of us going until early evening! The one negative point of our stay was that we were placed in the Seashell apartment, which is on the third floor. As my wife is currently awaiting surgery to replace both knees, this proved to be a problem at times. The other side of this was that the views across Whitby from there were breathtaking! The uploaded photograph is the view from the living room window of Seashell apartment. The apartment itself is extremely comfortable and would be good for a normal family with two adults and two children. There are two bedrooms, bathroom, excellent living room and fully appointed kitchen. The location of the whole site is a dream down a very small street (a family car can just make it along the road, single track) and a hundred yards from all the main roads and shopping areas as well as being central for all of the venues which we had to get to for the amazing Whitby Folk Festival. Another bonus was the apartment key let us into the building and our own apartment, making getting in easy; a must when we sometimes had stewarding duties up until 01.30! On this point, we were never disturbed by any other residents, even though it was fully booked and others were, like us, there for the festival and, therefor musicians! In short, an ideal stay in a beautiful location.
