Mouldy toast palace.
This economical bed and breakfast had the advantage of being very well situated for walks around Filey (including beach walks). However, it cannot be said to have any other advantages.
We were not overly impressed with the service we received.
Three of us stayed there for a weekend. We were provided with only two sheets to fill out our breakfast orders however, an oversight which we did not mind too much. As time went on, further oversights on the part of the proprietors began to colour our opinion of the place.
After filling out these two breakfast orders, (putting enough on one to cater for the third person, who for some reason best known to the proprietors had not been provided with a breakfast menu) we were informed with surprise that we had not ordered very much for our breakfast. (We feel sure that this observation was not meant to come across as rudely as it did).
When the time came for the above mentioned breakfast, we were served mouldy toast, not a terrible occurrence in itself, but after we pointed out the state of our toast, we were repeatedly served further mouldy toast.
My mother, after spelling her name clearly, and saying how it should be pronounced, was informed bluntly that the proprietor would call her something else. This is not an awful thing to happen to a person, but it did not encourage friendly feelings on all sides, and was not a welcoming thing to say to a guest.
We were not issued with further breakfast menus for the following day's breakfasts. It emerged that the proprietors made the assumption that you would like the exact same thing for breakfast on each morning of your stay at their establishment. As this is not generally how bed and breakfasts operate, we were far from impressed.
We were given a choice of family rooms to stay in, and the one we chose was adequate for the amount of time we spent in Filey. It was small, but they had managed to fit several beds into it, so you could in fact have fitted 5 people in there to sleep.
In the room was a TV and DVD player. At first this impressed us, however we quickly discovered that the DVD player was not in fact connected to the TV, and there was no lead provided to attach the two.
The room had an ensuite with working toilet, sink and shower. On closer inspection it became apparent that the bathroom had not been cleaned thoroughly at all.
The bathroom was not provided with a toilet brush.
Standard of hygiene aside, the size of the ensuite bathroom also proved a bit of a problem. It was very small. The sink was tiny, making things like washing your face and cleaning your teeth a difficult operation.
Lastly, although it claims to be a No Smoking bed and breakfast, the place smelled very strongly of smoke. read more
