I took a block in to be bored and honed by another shop in Portland. We agreed the owner/operator…read morewould do the work himself but an apprentice attempted the work and my perfect low miles Honda B16 block was ruined by a measurement error in setup. After a time consuming process, I managed to get another block out of California but it needed to be thoroughly examined and corrected beyond the bore/hone my original block required. That involved setting up for a line honing to check and measure the mains, minimally surfacing the deck to correct for lows between the cylinders and scratches, etc.. After talking to Ron and Ted at length, which they did not mind at all, I decided to have PER do the work. The knowledge level, shop arrangement and tidiness at PER were at another level. They did not flame any other machinists as the first place had. They actually complimented the guy that was going to do the work originally at the other shop, and several other machinists in the area. They were very receptive to all the specifications and manufacturer's specs that I gave them for pistons, rings, bearings, etc, and used them. They worked off production cards specifically printed by their software that detailed each machining job for my block and noted the specifications they achieved in each case. It was clear they were happy with the work because Ted talked me through the whole process as we went over the completed block and crankshaft. I ended up feeling confident in the replacement block for this 9K RPM track/street engine. While they were careful to note that some stains can not be removed by their cleaning machines, they managed to return the block to a near factory condition that I was unable to approach in a half hour of hot car wash pressure cleaning and scrubbing. They even offered me after hours pick up when they left a message to tell me it was ready, but after over 6 weeks wasted with the original error at the other company and acquisition of this hard to find block, I was anxious and drove right out. I am especially appreciative that Ted and Ron made the effort to help me with my schedule even though they are very busy. This is a shop that is sophisticated enough to organize multiple customer jobs in an efficient manner to keep their staff and machines humming. No need to remind them what they are doing for you or help identify your parts like some other shops I have been in. They carefully kept my parts and documentation clean and organized and together. Really, 5 stars isn't enough. Every shop makes mistakes, and it's the response that matters. Often though, people blame a shop for problems they create after the shop is done. These tend to be the biggest social media flamers while people without problems rarely write reviews. I didn't have any issues with PER and I suspect that errors are rare. I think if more happy customers wrote reviews, they would be more like mine. For a shop to get a 4 star or higher rating means that they have a great preponderance of happy customers, most not writing reviews at all. I was told that it needed a new water pump and the total would be $977. I decided to move forward because I was hours from home with 2 kids. At 3:00 I called to check in again. I was told that the wrong pump was delivered. Once I saw the purchase order that matched the part number delivered, it was clear that they had ordered the wrong part. I was told "they look really similar". I had lost trust once they tried to cover up their error and I decided to get a 2nd opinion since we would be stuck in town overnight. Rick's charged me $544 despite their error and despite not replacing the pump. I moved on to another mechanic, Orion's, who assessed that the head was cracked and the car needed much more work than a new pump. He said that if I had tried to drive home with a new pump the car would have seized up. My kids and I could have been stranded. Orion's only charged me $134 and I was finally able to get tow and a rental car to get my children home once we had proper answers.

Zero stars if i could…read more I cannot recommend this shop based on my experience. Things started off poorly when I arrived for an appointment that I had scheduled in advance and was told I didn't have one. After showing voicemail messages and phone records confirming the appointment, it was acknowledged that I did have one, but I was informed that several other vehicles would now be ahead of me. Over the next several months, with my approval, additional work was added beyond the original estimate. When I finally received the vehicle back, the bill was nearly three times higher than the original quote. Unfortunately, the vehicle immediately developed a severe oil leak from the valve cover area. I was instructed to bring it back, but no tow was offered or suggested despite the severity of the leak. I checked the oil level and attempted to drive it back to the shop. The engine failed and locked up just a couple of miles away, requiring me to have it towed in. After discussing the situation, we agreed that installing a rebuilt engine would be a fair resolution. I agreed to pay $500 for labor and another $500 to add wiring for the oil pressure and generator warning lights. Nearly a year later, I received a call that the vehicle was finally ready for pickup. However, it barely made it a couple of blocks before I discovered the brakes were dragging badly. This was especially frustrating because brake work had been part of the original repair request. The shop kept the vehicle for another couple of weeks before I was able to pick it up for a third time. At that point, I was informed that the newly installed engine would carry absolutely no warranty. After all the time, money, and frustration involved, I ultimately sold the vehicle just to recover some of my expenses. Throughout the entire process, the attitude and communication were overwhelmingly negative and only seemed to worsen over time. What's particularly disappointing is that I used this shop about 17 years ago and received excellent service. I later learned that the mechanic who performed that work has since passed away. Sadly, the quality of service I received this time was nothing like what I remembered. Based on my experience, I would strongly advise others to look elsewhere. I would never want someone else to go through what I experienced here.

The quality of work from Performance Import Industries (PII) is absolute trash. I paid this shop to…read moreupgrade the internals of engine heads with brand-new GSC components and to assemble them with new head gaskets and timing belt components. In the end, they couldn't successfully do the work I paid them to do. The car didn't even make it to 200 miles on the new engine build. It was just problem after problem. The first day I drove the car home from the shop, the car battery almost exploded on the way home. They overcharged it and couldn't accept full responsibility (AGM battery was only a year old). After ordering a new battery and installing it myself, I started the car and found coolant leaking from the bottom radiator hose, so I fixed that myself as well. After driving the car that day, I noticed the multiple random cylinder misfire CEL (P0300) came up. I also started to notice that the car stumbles in low RPM range, making it almost impossible to drive in heavy traffic or in a parking lot. It was an interesting problem where if you kept the RPM between 1k-2k and tried to hold it there, the RPM became unstable, and the CEL (P0300) came up. The car seemed fine at higher RPMs, but then, after further diagnosing, it turned out that the driver-side AVCS exhaust cam VVT values were erratic/unstable and not in sync with the passenger-side at any RPM range. At this point, I had zero confidence/trust in PII to do anything right. In the end, I decided to take my car to another shop to inspect and fix the incompetent mistakes made by PII. Turns out, PII completely trashed my heads and my brand new GSC cams to the point where I had to buy brand new head castings, brand new lifters, and another set of cams. They inspected the work and found multiple areas of improper assembly. The problematic driver-side exhaust cam was making a slight tapping sound at low RPMs, had low oil pressure around the cam, had unstable airflow, had significant wear on all cam journals and lobes, and the passenger-side exhaust cam did not spin freely. So many problems that would ultimately result in engine failure. I learned a lot during this process and was just amazed to see how badly a shop can screw up your car. I'm not sure why PII accepted this job in the first place since it seems like they can't handle this type of work. I feel as if I was scammed; that's how bad the work was. I would not recommend PII to anyone. The owner, Joel, doesn't accept responsibility for anything. After paying the new shop to redo the same work I paid PII to do, the car is finally back on the road and running without any issues. It was night-and-day difference in professionalism and competence compared between the two shops. It was an expensive lesson that cost me multiple thousands of dollars in damages.

He tells me he can do it immediately so I went back home to grab my subaru impreza and headed back to the shop. Once I get there, around twenty minutes later... it was done.
