Wandered into town, intending to take in the Kensington Palace, but fancied a bit to eat since we hadn't had much other than coffee for breakfast. CERU turned out to be an inspired choice quite different from the surrounding competing restaurants ranging from Italian to various Asian cuisines. While selections are principally Mediterranean, the execution is decidedly modernized because the recipes follow tradition, but enhance it with a modern twist. For example, Roasted Baby Aubergines with date syrup and tamari dressing, sesame and coriander. There are at least three different countries included in the single recipe. Service is excellent owing to the staff that must maintain high knowledge of all of the excellent recipes and keeping track of dining preferences. It's a lovely place to have quiet intimate conversations enjoyed within a relaxing and stately appointed environment. The chicken tenders are fried and only ok, had an interesting citrus flavor but I was underwhelmed. The lamb (their signature dish) was very tender and flavorful (& good portion!). Broccoli was ok, not worth the money. Automatic 12.5% "optional" tip. Service was iffy - I liked the host but our specific waitress was curt with me and slammed the dishes down a lot. Wow! What a great surprise this place was. My friend and I were wandering, searching for dinner, just minutes before this place closed on a Saturday night. We popped in and were immediately seated and taken care of. Wow! This restaurant is such a gem! Excellent Mediterranean food in a cozy, warmly lit space, with modern Turkish tunes playing in the background. Our party ordered the Shish Taouk (grilled chicken), braised octopus, broccoli, fried rice and the pita with hummus. Everything was bursting with flavor and cooked perfectly. This was one of the best if not THE best meal I had while in London! The whole menu is gluten free except the pita bread, which made it so easy to order. Every dish we shared was absolutely delicious! We shared a tonne of plates but the ones that really stood out were the calamari which were such a treat as they are usually not gluten free and the walnut and pomegranate dip. The prices were very reasonable, the service was great and I loved the Moroccan themed decor! I will definitely be coming back next time I'm in London! read more

Ceru was packed when we went for dinner, but we were still able to snag stool seating for two people as a walk in. Ambiance was very nice, dimly lit, and small space with limited seating. Service unfortunately was terrible. Our waitress took our order and then we never saw her again. First, the wrong appetizer was bought out (pita bread with hummus when we specified a gluten free meal and asked for crudité). Then, no one checked on us the entire time; empty plates were not taken away, and water was not refilled. Lastly, two other people sitting next to us came/ate/paid, and we were still sitting there waiting for the bill. Had to go up to staff and ask for the bill despite us sitting there with empty plates trying to get their attention. The food itself was very good - we got the hummus and crudité, mushrooms, watermelon salad, and eton mess for dessert. But the service definitely needs much improvement. read more

Lovely spot in the foodie mecca that is Bute St. Easy to miss in amongst the "trendy" places like the pink churro shop, but definitely worth a visit. The menu is small plates so you will end up ordered 5-6 things for the table. The prices were pretty high for the amount of food you were given. The food was ok. I did enjoy the hummus and pita and the broccoli. I wouldn't come back just because you have to order the whole menu to get enough food. Four stars based on a minimal late dining experience (was eating alone so had only two dishes) but the food so far has been excellent. Freshness is apparent in the beautifully crafted Fadi, so light, fresh and herb infused. The pita was moist and seasoned which balanced the fadi, instead of making the dip pull all the weight. I accompanied the Fadi with the braised octopus - so fresh tender with herbs and lemon it was fantastic. Staff Dimitra and Karoline were warm and knowledgeable, and friendly souls providing light (and heavy) dialogue with me as I dined alone at the bar. Definitely try Ceru. Wow! I am so glad something this delicious was just a few blocks away from my hotel. It was insanely flavorful and fresh. I love food that's colorful and celebrates ingredients for their true beauty and natural goodness. This is that place! The dips were so freakin yummy! And the lamb shoulder was a gorgeous plate. Wow. Our first dinner choice was mysteriously closed. Randomly walked across the street and found this gem. My favorite thing in London is when a restaurant hems and haws about you not having a reservation, and ask ever so politely if you could eat quickly because someone else reserved that table in an *hour*. "Yes, no problem, we're Americans." Food was from the Levant region (had to look it up) and was all wonderful. My favorite was the Hadi dip with Pita and the Kafta. Off menu special was the Mint Ginger Lemonade, which was excellent. Bless them, they had a kids menu but it was just a smaller portion of their regular dishes. More spice than the average kid would like but ours powered through with a promise of some Cadbury bars when we got home. Our waiter was a champ, super nice and helpful. It's hard for me to believe that there are so few reviews for what may be one of the finest Mediterranean restaurants in London. As New Yorkers, we have become attuned to great aromas that often envelope the outside of a truly outstanding dining establishment. And as we stood at the entrance to Ceru, we knew that if we were fortunate to be seated, since we didn't have a reservation, we would indeed be in for an extraordinary dining experience. Carmen greeted us and promised that we would be seated within a few minutes and soon we were seated in their small but very attractive restaurant. A waiter brought us our menus and began to explain how we should try to select two to three dishes per person (even though it would be more fun to share all the dishes). The front side of their menu describes how they care about preserving our natural resources and they donate $ 1 pound for every glass of tap water they serve to The World Land Trust. When we turned the menu over we were given lots of details about all the Dips, Salads, Seafood, Vegetarian, Meat and Poultry. The menu describes all the different herbs and spices that are used in each of the selections. There are symbols for " spicy", " nuts", "eggs" as well as many other allergens. We ordered Ceru's own craft beer that was so tasty, it didn't taste like any beer, we've had in NY! We ordered Fresh Beetroot & Shanklish with prunes,red chili, pine nuts and fresh herbs, Spiced Warm Cauliflower & Walnut, Fillet of Sea Bream, Lamb Shoulder and a side order of Pan Fried Tender-stem Broccoli. Each dish was so beautifully prepared with such elegant seasoning and cooked to perfection. I hate to admit it, but my review doesn't and can't properly describe how delightfully delicious our culinary adventure was at this remarkable restaurant. Carmen, who had first welcomed us into her restaurant, came over to make sure we were enjoying our dinner. She insisted on bringing us their complementary homemade lemonade as we ate a phenomenal chocolate mousse with cherries that was an amazing treat. Fortunately they have two restaurants in London, the other is in Soho, so we will make sure to dine in one of their establishments again before we return to NY. If you are lucky enough to live in London and don't have to fly 3,000 miles to go out for dinner, you should be lining up outside of CERU for what will certainly be a memorable dining experience. read more
