Urban hiking can be fun. You are able to enjoy yourself at a leisurely stroll and see the gorgeous architecture of buildings and say HI as you pass people on the street. For my birthday, I chose to Urban Hike Wheeling, WV and found this little gym in the Eastern Section of town. It looks like an old depot, but it is not. It is about 3 blocks back from the Ohio River but has been flooded many times. The building is surrounded by cute and artfully decorated painted coin meters for on street parking. Inside there is an Art Gallery and several locations to eat. This centre market has deep history in the infrastructure of Wheeling. I enjoyed the 20 minute stroll and the appetizing aromas of the different restaurants.

The Highlands - Five Guys at The Highlands

4.5 stars overall. The Highlands is a shopping complex that opened a while ago but still looks new…read more As of 2024, this shopping complex includes about 30 retail stores, 26 restaurants, 7 hotels, 28 service businesses, 3 entertainment businesses, 3 vehicle dealerships, and 3 industrial businesses. The stores sell accessories, clothing, footwear, electronics, furniture, craft supplies, home decor, home-improvement products, pet supplies, video games, chocolates, etcetera. The stores are definitely not upscale (e.g., Best Buy, Cabela's, JCPenney, Kohl's, Menards, Old Navy, Target, and Walmart), but they sell what local people need. The restaurants serve cuisines such as burgers, fried chicken, pizzas, Mexican foods, Japanese foods, steaks, ice creams, etcetera. Most restaurants are chains (e.g., Bob Evans, Eat 'n Park, Fusion Steakhouse, Jimmy John's, Primanti Bros., and Texas Roadhouse), and all have a casual atmosphere. Service businesses provide healthcare, nail and hair styling, cell-phone plans, banking, etcetera. Entertainment includes a movie theater, simulated golf, and a sports complex. Over the past several years, I have visited this shopping center multiple times. It is conveniently located for people who live near Wheeling city, Eastern Ohio, or Southwestern Pennsylvania and for people who are traveling through the area.

TJ Maxx is a great spot to pick up good deals on quality merchandise, and this particular location…read moreis no exception. The consistency of their "max capacity" policy and their varying selection could use some work, though it's still worth the trip. I've come here many times (sorry, I forget to check in a lot!) and sometimes I get lucky with what's on deep discount. While getting into the store can be a hassle sometimes due to their inconsistent handling of "one person leaves, one person can go in" policy due to covid, it's a pretty mild annoyance that resolves pretty quickly assuming a short line. It should come as no surprise that this store's contents are more geared toward women, though men can find some decent stuff as well. My favorite areas (from the perspective of being in front of the store and facing the back): the discount food/snack items in the back middle and back right, the deep-discount water bottles on the racks in the center of the store, the discount beverages in the back middle, and the men's section discounts on the left side. It's all a matter of timing, though I have gotten some fantastic deals on travel pillows, belts, chargers, snacks, water bottles, and much more. Other times I have left with nothing. In the end, isn't it the thrill of the hunt that's half the fun? I definitely recommend TJ Maxx, you never know what you might find! Overall: 4.0 stars --- Pros: - Great prices on most items. - Lots of easy parking out front. - Attractive, easy-to-navigate interior. - Some pretty cool items here on occasion... Cons: - ...though sometimes there will be nothing for you at all. - The admittance policy is designed with safety in mind, though it is implemented in an annoying and inconsistent way. - Minor quibble, though I wish they had a men's shoes section as well. Plenty of good options for the ladies, give us guys some too!
