Not a bad place to stay as long as you set your expectations. They offer rooms with bathrooms and rooms with the bathroom down the hall. At the time I booked, all they had available was a room with the bathroom down the hall. I had no issue with that, because 80 bucks a night, including parking for Hawaii is great. I saved money on the room, so I would have more to spend out in town . I was traveling by myself, and I'm former military, so I'm used to staying in very basic accommodations. The room did not have an air conditioner, but it did have a fan which was more than acceptable for me. I had no problem at all. I kept the fan running, and between that and the tradewinds, I was never hot. The bathroom down the hallway was definitely older, but they kept it clean. Everyone here was friendly, and the clientele was from budget travelers like me, to people who were staying a longer time. They do a background check on you before they let you stay, which I don't have a problem with, and if you want a visitor, it has to be in a public area. As for the location, it's perfect! It's literally right across the street from Ala Moana shopping center, which is huge. It's actually the largest open air shopping center in the world. If you can't find what you need there, you aren't looking hard enough. You are just down the street from Waikiki, Ala Moana Beach Park is about a block away, and if you don't have a vehicle, Ala Moana center is a main hub for the local transit system, simply known as "the bus", which will get you just about anywhere on the island. they used to have a bus that went fully around the island, but unfortunately, they don't anymore. I checked in at 3pm and also requested the use of laundry room, but I was advised by the front desk that it's been fully booked by the time I checked in, and the earliest available laundry room reservation was 8am the next day. So I paid the laundry fee, and the staff reserved 8am slot for me. However, when I came down at 8 am in the morning, the staff told me that she couldn't find any reservation linked to my room. After contacting another staff member, the front desk confirmed that I had indeed reserved the 8am slot, but by then another guest had already been given the key and was using the facility. As a result, I have been forced to wait for at least another three unnecessary hours due to an error that was entirely out of my control, and what's even worse, I had to check out before 10am, yet I would not be able to begin my laundry until 11. I understand that the front desk staff this morning may not have been personally responsible for the mistake. However, no one made any effort to coordinate with the other guest or find a solution that would allow me to use the laundry room at the time I had reserved the previous day. I should not be expected to bear the consequences of an administrative or communication error made by hotel staff. This is absurd and unacceptable. The issue is not merely the loss of a reservation, it is the complete lack of accountability and the absence of any reasonable effort to rectify a mistake once it was identified. read more

My friend Jeff recommended me to stay at Central YMCA at Atkinson. Because I didn't want to pay $150 a night at a hotel. So, I requested my reservation online. The process took 2 days. After I made my payment, I got my confirmation. Upon arrival, I had zero expectations of the room. This was not my first time staying at the Y. I was here prior to the turn of century as I transitioned from my apartment to return to the mainland. Except it was a shared bath situation. My room was on 2nd floor. This time, my room is on 5th floor because I wanted a private bathroom. You need to know what they don't have before arriving. So, you can either buy them while you are here or bring them with you. This is not a hotel. There is no TV. No AC. No refrigerator. No clock radios. No visitors in your room. No toiletries like soap, shampoo, lotion or body wash. In the room, you have a single bed, drapes, Venetian windows with slats for ventilation, screens for blocking bugs. There are 4 lights: walk-in closet, bathroom and main room. A desk with a folding chair. A night stand with no drawers. A trash can. The room has a door that locks securely. It has chair rail on 2 walls. Bed comes with a pillow, bed sheets and a comforter. The room smells like it had never been occupied for weeks. Carpet needed to be replaced as it wrinkled from age. I wish they had it shampooed, to the least. For the price $70 a night I can tolerate this condition. I love the trade winds and traffic noise. It reminds me of traditional island living. I managed to buy what I needed at nearby Walmart. I travelled along. So, I don't need much. Well, I don't have much to begin with. I'm just glad there is such facility for me to rest my head during my stay. Oh, one more thing. According to news article from 2019, this place was "to be sold" (I have never seen a reporting without confirmation). Looks like the deal fell through because of covid. Don't expect to use the swimming pool or the gym. Because they drained it back in 2015 and facility has been closed for many years. read more

I needed a cheap room in Waikiki for two nights while I took an exam at the convention center. This was right around the corner, so it fit the bill. They also had parking, which was a lifesaver. However, this place is on the fringe of being somewhat sketchy. This is not your average motel, this is almost hostel level accommodations. Don't go in with expectations. I got a room with a bathroom and the room was extremely bare bones. I had one lumpy flat pillow on the bed, even though I had asked to have three pillows in my reservation. There were ants and roaches. It was facing the street, so it was very loud loud at night and the jealousy windows did not particularly allow for sound blocking. There was a distinct urine smell in the room and I couldn't find where it was coming from. There was no extra lock on the door so as a woman alone, I was a bit concerned for safety, even though they have cameras monitoring the hallways. This place could use some bug treatment and new linens. it needed better towels, cleaner, mattresses, an extra pillow. A fridge in these units would go along way for short term stay. Now, I know they rent these units out by the week for people, but they really need a fridge in there. there's not a lot of shopping in the area, but I needed somewhere to put my leftovers from dinner so I could take them to lunch the following day. I also didn't wanna haul a cooler in and out of there. It's getting it from the car to the room... It's a bit of a distance. As for parking, the parking lot is super tiny, but once you know where it is, you're fine. The parking lot feels safe. The staff was extremely nice although the fact that they are behind glass leads me to believe it's not the safest area. There was a little food stand or Café of some sort inside, but I did not get to try it, as I was not there during the hours it was open. I think if you needed budget accommodations and or comfortable with the possibility of bugs and hostel accommodations, this would be a decent choice. if you were down on your luck and needed a place to stay for a few weeks at a good rate, this could also be a good place. The main issue I had with them was securing the accommodations. I made the reservation online and tried to follow up multiple times afterwards. The number on the email confirmation never got me a human to talk to. I had to go find a separate phone number for the specific location versus the general YMCA phone number for Hawaii. It was quite a pain. Then, when I finally get somebody to confirm my reservation, they tried to tell me there were staffing issues about returning my call and that's why nobody got back to me. That's not really an acceptable answer and not my problem... They need to have that figured out so however, many other dozen people that were blown off got answers. Anyway, this place is a good option for necessity, but not the best option if you have a few more dollars and a few more choices. read more

This is one of the worst experiences i have ever had so far in Honolulu, Hawaii. This place is dirty and filthy, no A/C. It's an old building that was built in the 50's. I think i got a good deal at price line together with their package but little did i know the YMCA did not even provide me any parking spot. They told me they don't have any spot left but when i double check their parking lot i see at least 4 or five spot available overnight. I saw come roaches too in the bathroom. This place I would give it a F-. If i know in advance, i would pick the hotel right accross from it ( Ala Moana Hotel) . It will cost more but i think it's worth it. TT read more

I've been going to the Nuuanu YMCA exclusively for over a year now. But today I was to meet some friends for dinner near Ala Moana. I decided to sneak in an afternoon hike at Diamond Head in the hot sun so I planned to come here to wash up before meeting my friends. As I walked in this YMCA, I noticed it was much smaller and this facility has been here a loooooong time with minimal upgrades (if any that is). The staff here were friendly and greeted me with a smile upon check-in. I only came here to wash up so I tried to look for the locker room only to get lost! So I went back to the reception area asking for directions. The locker room was quite small but kept clean. I was surprised how small the showers were. It was cool to see a shower chair for people with disabilities or the elderly to sit on. I didn't have much time to check this place out as I didn't want to be late for dinner but was able to check out the pool (quite smaller than Nuuanu YMCA), cardio room and the special classes ballroom. Overall, an average experience. Nothing special in my opinion. NOTES: 1) I parked across at the mall and walked over but saw a sign of the $1 parking fee. 2) They have a Vietnamese restaurant at this YMCA (where they have Subway at Nuuanu YMCA). read more

Sometimes I prefer Central Y over Nuuanu Y because it is the most conveniently located if you need to do errands or something at Ala Moana. However, it does have a much older feel to it. One thing I like better than the Nuuanu branch is the set up of this cardio room because all the machines face the same way! It seems like they utilize the space better. For the weight room however, I like the Nuuanu's facility better. I think the machines are older here, but at least they provide a sizable room for free weights + machines and a separate side room just with mats for an abdominal work out. I also prefer the locker room facility set up here (at least for the women's side)... It seems a little more private. I attended a class here once or twice but can say that I prefer the class instructors at both the Kaimuki and Nuuanu branches. Glad to hear that they are going to be sticking around! They were slated to close at the end of this year but I guess they're here to stay!! To park in the shared parking lot with the apartment complex, you pay $1 at the Y front desk and they'll give you validation for 2.5 hours. Or, if you wanna be really chang you can evade the $1 parking fee by parking at Ala Moana and walking across the street. read more

I have been a member at this Y for almost 15 years. I keep coming back, though. As everyone else says, the facilities are not that nice. The machines are (sometimes) older, more expensive, the bathrooms/showers are not that clean, and some of the trainers are surly. BUT, most of the staff is very nice, the parking is good, and it is never very crowded. It is nice to not have to feel like you have to dress up to go to the gym. It is also nice to see other regulars that are sincerely glad to see you. Best of all, though, the afternoon group exercise/aerobics classes rock! read more

As far as I know the YMCA has been going back and forth to be demolished and turned into condos for years. Permit problems, funding problems is the gossip for the project. Is a pretty aged facility across from the Ala Moana center and hotel. All the fitness and recreational facilities are closed and no longer used. The housing section is still running. Probably one of the only places you can stay for $50 a night in the area. It's a bit sketch to be honest. I never stayed. But I supposed if you're on a budget and you do the backpacking, camping, hosteling route, I suppose it would be adequate. It would be great to see a place like this newly renovated, it was quite popular I hear in its hayday but nowadays it's kinda an eyesore read more

There are pros and cons to joining the YMCA at the Atkinson location. The pros: Large heated, swimming pool Helpful staff Plenty of classes Not too crowded For the men, private lockers/work out lounge upstairs The Cons: Outdated machines Very expensive rates compared to 24 Hour Fitness (They used to charge me almost $700 per year compared to the $100 per year that I pay at 24 Hour Fitness currently) The private lockers/work out lounge upstairs for men. Was my last sentence confusing? How could the private men's lounge upstairs be both a pro and a con, you say? Let me explain. For an extra $20 a month, the Atkinson YMCA provides male members access to their own personal locker on the second floor. Also, no women are allowed in this inner sanctum. But this creates a curious phenomenon. The guys up there have no shame walking around completely in the nude, not just in the locker room and in the shower area, but also in the weight rooms as well. One day, I walked into the work out area on the 2nd floor where the Universal Gym was located and I noticed that a large, burly fella in his 50's was bench pressing while completely butt naked. He didn't even have the courtesy of covering up his Frank and Beans with a towel. I could clearly see his goodies nestled between his thighs like a sleeping, furry hamster. I tried not to stare, but it was like passing by a wreck on the highway. You can't help but look because of a combined morbid sense of curiosity and disbelief in what you're witnessing. Needless to say, I wasn't about work out in this same room after he had spread his rodent sweat to god knows where. Rather than filing a complaint, I promptly cancelled my YMCA account the next day. Anyway, don't let my negative experience discourage those who do not feel comfortable with the meat market atmosphere that some of the larger chains seem to foster. I just recommend for guys NOT to shell out the extra $20 bucks per month for the privilege of watching geriatric male reviews. read more

Several months ago I was offered a free six month membership at a very fancy gym in town. Not wanting to pay for my YMCA membership if I wasn't using it I cancelled it to join this "fancy" gym. Well, needless to say I was dissapointed with that place and quickly signed up at the Y again. The YMCA is so much more personable, the front desk as well as the instructors are friendly and take the time to get to know the members. It's kind of like a YMCA family, alot of people who go here are here all the time, so you make friends fast. Maybe it is a little run down, but the aforementioned facility wasn't that much better either. My favorite part of this gym are the classes. My absolute favorites are Hi-Lo, Turbo Kickboxing, Zumba, and Boot Camp. There is a class for everyday of the week, which keeps your workouts fun and intersting. Pam is one of the best Zumba instructors there is, I will never know where she gets all her energy from. I think group fit classes are a great way to stay motivated, and if you miss a class the insructors always want to know where you were. As much as I love group fit I have also become a fan of jogging/ walking on the treadmill. At first I was turned off by their cardio room because It's small and can get stuffy at times, but I love the treadmills with the t.v's. The time goes by so much faster when you are jogging and watching The Real Housewives at the same time. I love this gym for many reasons; location, convenience, unbeatable rates, and cool people. So maybe it doesn't have a smoothie bar or steam room, but what it lacks in fancy ammenities it makes up for in character. read more

It's never crowded here, it's far from a meat market and the people who go here NEVER size you up. If anything I was so inspired by this YMCA because never in my life have I ever seen so many people in their 60s and over SO FIT! Honestly you'd be totally surprised to the array of people I've seen working out here. I'm talking Grammy winners, politicians, pro-athletes. Those who go here, know it's a hidden gem and one of the best kept secrets in town. Dang, I shouldn't have said that. lol. Pros: -They keep their equipment new and updated -The classes and instructors are AWESOME. First class all the way. -Never crowded, even during peak hours. -Easy parking -The staff is 5 star. -Comfortable family environment. Not a meat market. I have had a membership to this gym for several months now. I also had a membership a couple of years ago (I cancelled it when I moved to a neighborhood farther away, and then rejoined when I moved close by again). This has been the only gym that I have really been able to stick with in Honolulu. Basically, I am very easily intimidated by gyms, and I absolutely cannot deal with places that have what I would call a "meat market" atmosphere. So it is easy to see why I decided to go to the Central YMCA: this place is pretty popular with the under 10 and over 65 age groups. I do not fit into either of those age groups, nor do I have any children or elderly family members that I cart around on the regular (my grandma prefers chillin' at the Ilikai pool in her aqua jogger). But I feel very comfortable at the Central YMCA because it's so low pressure. You see, I look young and fairly fit (kinda? I guess? A little?), but I actually have a joint problem that has led to moderately severe arthritis (among other things) since my late teens/early twenties. I feel very self conscious about doing low-intensity or short duration exercises (even though they are very important for my joint health) because I worry that people might be thinking, "Um... Why is that chick walking so slowly on the treadmill? Does she not realize that running exists? Is she wearing an invisible leg cast to protect a horribly broken leg that is not apparent to the rest of the world?" At the Central YMCA, I don't really worry about stuff like that. Yeah, I may be walking like 2 miles an hour on the treadmill, but so is the lady on the treadmill next to me - and she is also wearing a wool sweater and orthopedic shoes. And she might be singing to herself. But whatever! Who cares, right? We are here for fitness! And maybe summer camp. Anyway, here are my requirements for a gym: 1) No "meat market" atmosphere 2) Treadmills, ellipticals, and stationary bikes that have their own TVs and headset jacks That's really it. Therefore, the Central YMCA fully meets my needs. [Friendly staff is a bonus for me, but I'm also cool if they just leave you alone. However, everyone I've met at the Central YMCA is very nice, from the personal trainers to the front desk staff.] In case this might be a problem for you, I will mention that the women's locker room can be a bit scary. For example, there are certain shower stalls that I won't use because I'm somewhat concerned that the monster from Cloverfield might live there. Or maybe that chick from The Ring. Let's just say that if you offered me $1,000 to spend a night alone in the women's locker room at the Central YMCA, I would say, "Thanks, but no thanks." That being said, I would rather do the elliptical surrounded by elderly women belting out "la Vie en Rose" and shower in the stall next to Baby Mothra than work out at 24 Hour Fitness. read more

I really enjoying coming here because of the indoor basketball court. There is always a good game and everyone here is out to have fun. Staff here is very nice and take the time to get to know you on a first name basis. For Hawaii, I think that this is a good gym where you can use their lifting equipment, swimming pool, boxing area, stretching area, cardio room, racket ball court and locker rooms. They even have a machine to test your body fat so you can keep track of your progress. The parking is good because if you pay for monthly parking, you can park in the garage parking. Been coming here to the "Y", for quite some time now. I like the convenience of avoiding the morning traffic grind to work in Waikiki, getting in early, getting my daily workout in, and then getting out all showered and refreshed, awake and ready for work. True, the building is quite dated, and in need of a minor face lift, like all the regular members there in the mornings ( Hey..... wait a minute .. I resemble that remark!) but that's what makes it great. Really comfortable. It's like that favorite "holey" T-shirt that you always wear, you put it on, not to make a fashion statement, but you wear it cause it fits you perfectly, it's sorta snug, and yet loose all at the same time ( know what I mean?) It's a comfortable place to get healthy, hardly ever crowded, and not your socializing, meat market, glitzy type gym. The machines in the cardio room have been replaced with new ones. Also new weight machines, racks, and bars in the weight room. Now they're renovating the bathroom (men's) by the front desk to accommodate families with infants. And if you're hungry after your workout, there's "Garden Cafe" (Viet- Namese, American) in the lobby, one of my favorite Pho, places. But that was a previous review! read more

I needed a gym while staying nearby recently, (our hotel gym was pretty much nonfunctional.) I found this place on Yelp, and when i called to inquire about day rates, they were the most reasonable around. The man who signed us in was a little slow with the computer, but he apologized, and was really nice. This gym has reasonable rates, and is VERY well equipped. They have a vast selection of cardio machines, (many with built in TV's), a pool, and a huge weight room with lots of free weights and machines, (plus free towel service.). I really wish I had gone here right away instead of the Puneha Spa & Fitness. Even though Puneha gave us a free day pass, I'd rather pay the fee here. It's worth the extra money. Even the ventilation here was better, which makes a difference when you're working out for awhile. I would definitely come back here, and I'd highly recommend it, whether you're a visitor or a resident. read more

I've only stayed at one previous YMCA so I have something to compare the rooms to. I had a room with a shared bath and upon check in, the guy says i can't have visitors or alcohol which I thought to be odd. There was no tv in the room, only one towel and no soap, check out was at 10 and not noon,there was no internet access, and no fridge in the room. my room faced the street and that's all I heard all night. the only reason it gets two stars is because there is a mall across the street and around the corner from an airport bus. I can't speak on the facilities but thank God I only stayed one night. read more

IF YOU ARE DRIVING, BRING ONE DOLLAR ($1.) FOR PARKING! Did I get your attention? Read on! Being a member of the Nuuanu YMCA entitles me to use any YMCA fitness center, which is great. I thought I would give the Central YMCA fitness center a try this morning, since it is a bit closer to my home than the Nuuanu location. They have a big room with cardio machines: treadmills, ellipticals, and bicycles. They also have a decent room with machines and free weights. My wife and I were members here BC (Before Children), and it's nice to see that they finally took the carpet out of the locker room and it is now tile floors (cleaner is always good!) The machines looked a bit older and not as well-preserved as the equipment at the Nuuanu YMCA. What was nice is that the fitness center opens at 4:30 a.m. Monday-Friday at this location, which is good if you want to get your workout out of the way before starting work. That is a really good time for a married dad (or mom) to work out, because it has minimal impact on the family (such as taking kids to lessons/sports at the end of the day). What I didn't like was hearing a man in the weight room dropping the "F-bomb" repeatedly while he was telling his friend a story in the weight room. This guy was probably in his 60's and you would think he would be more polite being from that generation. I know that's how some people talk, but at 5:00 a.m. in a fitness center that has the word "Christian" in it, it's just not what I wanted to hear. Oh, well, it's not his problem, it's mine. What really surprised me, though, was that they now charge $1. for parking. You pay the desk attendant $1 before leaving and then he validates your parking ticket. In the aforementioned BC days, wife and I used to work out together, and one of the benefits was not having to pay for parking. Well, at least it's competitive with the nearby 24-hour fitness on Kapiolani Blvd, which also charges $1 parking. The only difference being the parking spaces are bigger at the YMCA, so you're much less likely to get your car scraped or dented. Plus, if you live in the neighborhood, you can save the $1 parking fee simply by walking! So, all in all, a good experience, except for the $1 charge and the crude language in the weight room. And the front desk attendant was a friendly young man who greeted me and wished me a good day as I went off to work. Good customer service is always appreciated! read more

Nice place to work out. The gym is a little bit older, but they keep it pretty clean and well ventilated. Pros: The weight room always has at least 2 of every kind of machines, so you are never waiting to long to do seated rows or tricep extensions. The cardio room has a lot of treadmills, bikes, and elliptical machines. Sometimes, when there are a lot of people, it can get a little musty smelling. The women's locker room is spacious and has a lot of lockers for use. You can usually rent a lock if you leave your membership card at the front desk. Parking is really close with free validation (up to 2 hours). Staff is always super friendly and helpful. Cons: It is an older establishment, and you can see the years of usage. But, they are slowly renovating it. The likelihood of spotting naked, old people is high at this gym, so be forewarned. Zumba days always make parking a little more difficult to find, so I suggest going an hour before or after those classes. read more

My son loves the swim lessons. Usually 2-3 students per instructor. They make kids where a float belt and they use a barbell float when doing kicking drills. My son looks forward each Sunday to the swim lessons. We are very happy with the lessons and plan to continue for the next session. 30 minutes is enough time because my son is shivering by the time he is done. The lifeguard validates the parking so no charge which is nice. There are a few seats around the pool but most parents bring their own beach chair and sit under the shade. The swim instructors make the lessons fun for the kids. read more

I have been a member of the Central YMCA for 23+ years. Over that time, I have watched the sad decline of this facility from mediocre to downright ghetto. Member complaints occasionally generate small improvements, but they are usually not permanent. When I first joined, I liked the idea that my above-average membership fees were helping the community and providing programs for youth. The sad decline, though, has made that ideal a bit more bittersweet. The Y's staff are all reasonably nice and friendly. And, I like the idea of going to a gym that people don't "do their hair", "put on makeup", or "get expensive workout clothes." It is a gym, not a singles bar. If you like group exercise classes, then the YMCA is a great place to go. If you have kids and want children's programs, this is also a great place for you. The Central YMCA has become less and less clean over the years. Seriously, do they ever mop the locker rooms? Or clean / mop the weight and cardio rooms? The stench in the cardio room has gradually become unbearable. The locker room is nasty. I would do not shower there unless I absolutely have to. Last week, I went to the shower and found an old man asleep on a chair outside the shower room. I was literally afraid he was dead until I woke up. If you come in around the time the children's programs get out, you will also have rowdy kids running around in the locker room. Frankly, they should have separate youth locker rooms as young kids should not be in the same locker room as fat, naked old men. I realize the staff there tries their best, but it is clear the YMCA of Honolulu has not allowed them to do much to improve the facility. read more

This was one of the first fitness centers that I've been to after relocating to Honolulu. The staff at the front desk were very helpful, and took me on a tour of the gym .They have a pool for lap swimming, an indoor basketball court, cardio room, and a weight room. You'll find everything you need here for your workout. However, you'll notice that the equipment, although well maintained, is some of the oldest to date. Don't get me wrong it will get the job done, but it's just not as efficient and convenient as some of the newer equipment out there (UFC Gym or 24 Hour Fitness). Membership fees are rather unique at the YMCA, but for most people, it is more than it should be. They have special memberships for teenagers, and memberships based on your annual income. However, even if you make very little, the lowest they will go is about $33 per month. The average cost that most members pay is $50 per month. That price can be easily bargained at any 24 Hour Fitness around. As for parking, I believe they have a lot that charges $1 for parking. The gym closes very early, so if you tend to get your workouts in later than sooner, you might want to reconsider your options. I would have possibly given this gym 3 stars, had it not been for one of the staff that pissed me off. Don't get me wrong, 90% of the staff I've encountered here has been nothing but helpful and friendly. However, during my guest workout here, I was lifting weights while wearing my crocs. After working out for about 35 minutes and nearing the end of my workout, an employee approaches me and asks me if I am working out. I told him I was, and he continued that I could no longer work out because I was not wearing shoes, and insisted that I leave immediately. I told him I would be done within 5 minutes, and just needed to finish my last few sets. He maintained the idea that I had to leave due to safety precautions (crocs are actually considered shoes). At this point, I was getting pretty livid that some dumb ass was about to ruin my workout. I said if I don't leave, are you going to call security on me. He then pauses for a moment, and replies with these exact words: we will make you leave. At this point, I didn't know if I should just grab the 45lb plate next to me and destroy this sad excuse of a man, or just leave. I understand the whole "you must wear shoes" policy, but the main reason it is enforced is due to safety. I can tell by looking at this guy that he doesn't work out, nor does he know anything about gym safety. If he wanted to enforce safety, he shouldn't have approached me demanding that I leave, for his own safety, and also creating a scene at the gym which could affect other peoples' workout, which could be considered a safety hazard in itself. read more

Cenral YMCA is a good place to work out. The staff at the front desk are friendly and helpful,And they won't hassle you to get a membership. Don't let the looks of the facility fool you,it has everything you need to get a good workout. You can borrow locks for your locker if you ain't got one of your own and the towels are provided. The dumb bells in the gym only goes up to 125 pounds. Not that it matters to most, but for me it does. The patrons varies in age, but I guess it depends on what time of the day it is, it will lean more towards a particular age group( the elderly). Worst place I've ever stayed at. Bad customer service, dirty bathrooms, smelly rooms. A couple days before my estimated move out date, I was told I'd be able to check into a double the last night of my week stay and that it was already certain the room would be mine. So the next morning, all I did was inquire about rescheduling moving into the double and the employee I spoke to canceled my reservation and sold it to someone else leaving me and my boyfriend with no place to stay. She gave my boyfriend bogus excuses and we were told there was nothing she could do. WILL NOT EVER COME BACK HERE AND FULLY DO NOT RECOMMEND STAYING HERE! Only reason I gave a one star at least is because it had a gym, pool, child care, etc which was nice. Overall worst experience ever! read more

Signed up today! Love it already! Went at 5-6:30 Gym Rush Hour, and never had to weight (ha ha .) for a machine. Everyone was super friendly, clean towels, not too shabby equipment. Parking was good too, except I had to take the brunt of the crazy lady in the adjacent apartments who doesn't like sharing her parking lot with the Y, so if u see her, don't ask where the YMCA entrance is ... read more

Don't be fooled by the three stars... this is the very reason I love this place. It's not fancy at all, even kind of ran down and crummy, BUT the equipment is plenty and works good and is maintained. The staff is friendly and the place is never crowded so I can get my workouts in without waiting for people to move the fotw so I'm not wasting time to get my swole on like the chumps who just sit on the equipment or get chatty instead of lifting. read more

This is a rating of "YMCA Residence Facility", not the gym itself. I relocated from the east coast, didn't know anyone in Honolulu before coming here so I stayed at the YMCA for a month. The price was $850 per month which I thought is better than staying at a hotel or youth hostel. The reasons I rate this facility as a 1 are: the customer-service experience was very poor, MOST (99%) of the front-desk staff were not very friendy or accomodating at all, I wasn't informed about many things upon arrival such as: not being made a photo id key required to get into the building, and laundry procedures. There is only 1 laundry in the building which is locked, you need to access a key to get it. There is only 1 key and a sign-up sheet which runs on two hour increments. When I needed to do the laundry a front desk agent asked me to go to a laundromat located two miles away from the YMCA, which defeated the purpose of staying at the Y. Don't be deceived by the advertised "maid service" listed on the website, they only clean and change sheets once a week. Most of the people who reside in the building are usually crazy, and tend to sit outside the Y all day, and generally appear depressed. The bathrooms are not always clean. No guests are allowed in the building, no internet in room, and no kitchen. The reason I even give it one star is it is in a good central location, moderately priced, and you have access to their gym facilities for free. read more

I would give the central YMCA a zero star if possible. Do not take your kids here. Do not even think of being a resident here and do not donate your money to this organization. The staff and management are dishonest, they do not care, and they do not take responsibility for their actions. The clerks couldn't even do basic math , didn't care at all, wouldn't listen, they didn't know their own policies and their actions were not congruent with their own policies. The management self righteously talked down to me and was very disrespectful. I was talking with Ben the membership manager and I said "I love the mission here" (which is "to put Christian principles into practice through programs that help healthy spirit, mind and body for all.") and he said the mission doesn't matter and he doesn't care. the y is basic but i really like it, mostly for the same reasons others have already pointed out - it's not like working out at 24 hr. fitness where there are so many people staring at you i feel like i would need to put on makeup and do my hair before i go. the people who work out at the y are just there to work out - they are unassuming and unintimidating, and the staff is really nice. the women's locker room is not that amazing but i never shower there anyway. and the hours are good - they're not open at midnight, but i can't kid myself - i wouldn't be there then even if they were. :P they also seem to have some really great kids' programs for after school and furlough days. read more
