Our local chapter of Blacks In Government had our annual collection of donations of rice and canned goods from our membership (and friends). Even though I came at a busy time of day, IHS had numerous volunteers to come out and help retrieve the donations. Thanks guys, BIG mahalo for helping me so quickly in the small parking lot before the rain poured down. Happy Holidays!

It is hard to rate IHS. Recently, my work organization did a service project here to help with…read moresorting clothes. I write this review to spread words out there for IHS. They can always use helping hands. So if your organization such as work, church, or whatever it is, do contact IHS for good cause. I do understand that we have mixed emotion about homeless etc. but sometimes you do for people who are wanting to help who are in need. So think of it as you are helping the good people. I spent 3 hours on a Saturday and staff were so appreciative and offered us snacks and water. Oh I learned that this location is for women. IHS on Nimitz is for men. And I'm not going lie, when I got to this location to check in at the counter I didn't feel safe. But once I went inside the building and met with other volunteers I was okay.

An amazing place…read more.. McDonald's was one of earlier jobs that I worked while I was still in school and as it was corporate back then it was tough though always a great experience and as I learned about some of the things they do for the Ronald Mcdonald House I was much younger back then had no idea what it does for the community. Fast forward to the 2025 and hearing that they had a 5K charity of a day that I'm usually off I was so excited to register and participate in this even only to fully miss out on it unfortunately and was off island shortly after than and received an email of my tote that was unclaimed and asked if I was still interested in it which of course I was and was delighted to have a chance to claim it and pick it up right here on Judd Hillside Rd and since I was there I just had to pick up a few items to donate along with a bunch of brand new plushies that I loved but knew that it had more love to share as well. Nothing brings me greater joy than to share and give joy to others and though it was a small gesture it really made me feel happy and hopes that all the items will give comfort and love at their time of need. Thank you!

Give back to your local community partners!…read more This is a great nonprofit to participate and support as they are easy to contact and schedule time with a team and come by to help or donate. They are always posting material items on Instagram or social media showcasing what they are needing. Upon arrival, they let you know what you may need to do to help out. They offer convenient times around busy work schedules, which is great. You may paint, assemble bags, prepare something in the kitchen, whatever fairly simple projects are needed for the home... Knowing you are able to put a smile on the face of a child is amazing. What these kids and families go through, most may never have to and the majority are unable to imagine. Taking a moment to give time to help as a volunteer goes a long way! This location does not have parking but please do not let that deter you from helping as they do provide a shuttle to and from the facility.

Not a bad place to stay as long as you set your expectations…read more They offer rooms with bathrooms and rooms with the bathroom down the hall. At the time I booked, all they had available was a room with the bathroom down the hall. I had no issue with that, because 80 bucks a night, including parking for Hawaii is great. I saved money on the room, so I would have more to spend out in town . I was traveling by myself, and I'm former military, so I'm used to staying in very basic accommodations. The room did not have an air conditioner, but it did have a fan which was more than acceptable for me. I had no problem at all. I kept the fan running, and between that and the tradewinds, I was never hot. The bathroom down the hallway was definitely older, but they kept it clean. Everyone here was friendly, and the clientele was from budget travelers like me, to people who were staying a longer time. They do a background check on you before they let you stay, which I don't have a problem with, and if you want a visitor, it has to be in a public area. As for the location, it's perfect! It's literally right across the street from Ala Moana shopping center, which is huge. It's actually the largest open air shopping center in the world. If you can't find what you need there, you aren't looking hard enough. You are just down the street from Waikiki, Ala Moana Beach Park is about a block away, and if you don't have a vehicle, Ala Moana center is a main hub for the local transit system, simply known as "the bus", which will get you just about anywhere on the island. they used to have a bus that went fully around the island, but unfortunately, they don't anymore. However, you can get just about anywhere you need to go still. I stayed a week and I had a fantastic stay. I would stay here again without any hesitation whatsoever. Thanks

My friend Jeff recommended me to stay at Central YMCA at Atkinson. Because I didn't want to pay…read more$150 a night at a hotel. So, I requested my reservation online. The process took 2 days. After I made my payment, I got my confirmation. Upon arrival, I had zero expectations of the room. This was not my first time staying at the Y. I was here prior to the turn of century as I transitioned from my apartment to return to the mainland. Except it was a shared bath situation. My room was on 2nd floor. This time, my room is on 5th floor because I wanted a private bathroom. You need to know what they don't have before arriving. So, you can either buy them while you are here or bring them with you. This is not a hotel. There is no TV. No AC. No refrigerator. No clock radios. No visitors in your room. No toiletries like soap, shampoo, lotion or body wash. In the room, you have a single bed, drapes, Venetian windows with slats for ventilation, screens for blocking bugs. There are 4 lights: walk-in closet, bathroom and main room. A desk with a folding chair. A night stand with no drawers. A trash can. The room has a door that locks securely. It has chair rail on 2 walls. Bed comes with a pillow, bed sheets and a comforter. The room smells like it had never been occupied for weeks. Carpet needed to be replaced as it wrinkled from age. I wish they had it shampooed, to the least. For the price $70 a night I can tolerate this condition. I love the trade winds and traffic noise. It reminds me of traditional island living. I managed to buy what I needed at nearby Walmart. I travelled along. So, I don't need much. Well, I don't have much to begin with. I'm just glad there is such facility for me to rest my head during my stay. Oh, one more thing. According to news article from 2019, this place was "to be sold" (I have never seen a reporting without confirmation). Looks like the deal fell through because of covid. Don't expect to use the swimming pool or the gym. Because they drained it back in 2015 and facility has been closed for many years.

PRE-COVID 19 Stay At Home Orders:…read more We were watching the local news when I heard about the Free Open House Event for the Ho'okupu Center which occurred on March 14, 2020. Our curiosity was piqued because we wondered about the Center's stated mission as a learning center for under-resourced youth education and training in the green jobs sector and its architectural re-invention or transformation from a dilapidated net drying shed that was left by O'ahu's commercial ahi fishermen. The Ho'okupu Center is located in the Kewalo Basin Harbor Park next to the Harbor Master's facility, there is a free parking lot for park-goers and several parking stalls fronting the center. We were skeptical about going there as this area of this park was commonly known for illegal drug dealing activities, homeless, and delinquency. However, we were pleasantly surprised and impressed with the transformation of this facility and area. The center is managed by Hawai'i's leading environmental educational non-profit organization called "Kupu". Kupu has been using this facility with its Hawai'i Youth Conservation Corps Community Program. Walking into the facility, we noticed its new commercial kitchen, laboratories, classrooms, and meeting spaces that will be used to support Kupu's community and culinary programs for youth and young adults. The center also provides for new spaces where the community can meet for exhibitions, meetings, educational and volunteer events to engage in sustainability, conservation, Hawaiian culture, and service. The facility is now a model of sustainability as it features photovoltaic energy panels to provide net-zero usage. In addition to facility sustainability, Kupu's community program participants will steward the shoreline and park surrounding it. Major sponsors of the new center include: * State of Hawaii * The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, Inc. * ALTRES * Ward Village Foundation * Kamehameha Schools * G70 * McInerny Foundation * MacNaughton Foundation * Atherton Family Foundation We were glad that we had the opportunity to check this place out during its Open House and with the hope, we'll be able to attend another function here to support Kupu's Programs. Oh, if I'm not mistaken, it's culinary program is led by Chef Mark "Gooch" Noguchi, Pili Group who can work with to cater your function.

I was looking for a place where I could donate some of my belongings that could be of better use…read morethan just sitting in my closet and drawers being unused, but I wanted to make sure the donation would go directly to the people in need right here in Hawaii. And specifically, to women and children in need. Surprisingly, I couldn't find many places that fit these specifications till I came across the the Women's & Family Shelter, an emergency shelter from the Institute for Human Services (IHS). IHS is an independent, local 501c3 nonprofit organization that makes sure 100% of all donations stays in Hawaii. Drop off was really simple. The donation drop off area is open Monday thru Friday from 0800-1600. You can park your vehicle temporarily right in front of the garage while you offload your items. On their website, there are 5 different ways you can help: 1. Monetary Donation. A link is provided on the website for your convenience. This can be a one time donation or you can set up a monthly donation. 2. An In-Kind Donation. The donation center is located around the corner of IHS at the garage entrance on Kaamahu Place. On the website " Wish List" you can find a list of what type of items are in need. Items needed are gently used clothing (all types) household toiletries (even makeup), school items, food, baby related items to name a few. Basically just think of what you use and need and eat on a daily basis to give yourself an idea of what you could donate to help another person/child. 3. Planned Giving, such as bequests from an estate plan or will, real estate, personal property, etc. 4. Cooperate and foundation giving, such as scholarships, grants, direct donations, etc. 5. Volunteer. There are many different types of volunteer opportunities, such as tutoring children, kitchen help, serving meals, working at the health clinic, sorting donations, etc. There's an opportunity for everyone to give in whatever form you choose. So instead of letting your drawers, closet, garage, shoe rack, etc get cluttered with unused or unwanted items, why not give it back to the community to help another person or child out? Or if you're not ready to part with your treasures a monetary gift is always appreciated. Donating my belongings not only made my house much tidier, but I was also happy knowing my items had a 2nd life while helping to meet the needs of a person/child right here in Hawaii.
