A Catholic Church in Urban Honolulu, Hawaii... Across the street (Kaheka Street) from Don Quijote is Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church. I had never been inside before, so, when my mom mentioned that Uncle Larry Lee's memorial service was going to be held here, I was in! There's a small, free parking lot behind and alongside the church. Just enter from Kaheka Street. We entered the church from the back entrance which faces the parking lot. The convenient restroom is located here in this reception area. There's another (front) entrance from Kaheka Street. Inside, the pews are arranged in a semi-circular fashion, facing the altar. The ceiling is really awesome! It provided a comfy, yet spacious feel. I appreciated the air conditioning, soft lighting, clean carpets, and especially the candle niche where local Saints (Father Damien and Mother Marianne Cope of Molokai) were included with the famous Saints Peter and Paul. Mom and I are familiar with Father Kahn, who said the Mass. He used to be at St. Stephen Church, our home parish. It was nice to see him again, in his same professional manner. The music was really good. The piano and guitar really complimented the songs such as "On Eagles Wings", "Here I Am Lord", "Kanaka Waiwai", and "Aloha 'Oe". Overall, I felt like this was an appropriate venue for saying farewell to Uncle Larry who was the Director of Veterans Affairs, after retiring from the US Army. He went to mass every day - walking from his apartment to The Cathedral - until his legs failed him. He was a devoted husband to Aunty Dora (RIP) and Aunty Vickie, and a loving father to his three children. Aloha 'oe, Uncle Larry... Until we meet again! read more

My wife and I swung by here for Sunday mass while on a weeklong vacation. Thankfully, their website was easy to navigate and they have some very convenient mass times on Sunday, which is always good for any church. The place is very unique. More auditorium style, but with a Hawaiian flair. I guess it's normal to put leis on statues in Hawaii, because I've seen it both at the church on Lanai and here. It's a nice touch. Everything seems very laid back and informal, even aspects of the liturgy. I've never seen ushers and readers show up in Hawaiian shirts and khaki shorts, but I guess that's the norm on the islands. They know they're in a tourist area near the hotels, and it shows. They made a point of recognizing the visitors, asking where we were from, and putting leis made of seashells on all of us as a welcome gift. I can see where some hardcore traditionalist Catholics may have issues with this parish and the way it's run, but for the community they serve, they do a great job of bringing Christ to exactly where the people are, both in terms of the culture of the locals and the outreach to visitors. read more

St. Peter & Paul Church is beautiful! It reminds me of the Santa Barbara Church back home on Guam! It's located in Honolulu right next to the Don Quiote (Old Holiday Mart) and a few blocks away from Ala Moana Shopping Center. It has plenty of seating and is air conditioned. Because of the round design, the choir sounds amazing, although I remember the Choir before the current one, sounding a bit more angelic than the current one...not that the current one is bad, but the old choir was AMAZING! They take the time to welcome visitors and new comers to the Church, before service starts...and also take the time to celebrate anniversaries and birthdays at the end of each mass. I definitely feel at home when going to this location and although we are currently not living in Waikiki, I still find this Parish my choice when going to Sunday Service!! read more

Sts Peter and Paul Church is a beautiful Roman Catholic Church close to Waikiki Beach. The good: The location is good, the building is beautiful, the priest gives a good homily, and the liturgy and music have a Hawaiian flair to it. They also had a section for those with special needs, and two sign language interpreters who interpreted for the hearing impaired. They ask those for whom it's the first time they've been there to stand, and are given a welcome and a lei. The bad: It could have been a more reverent environment. People talked throughout the Mass. People got up and left and came back during Mass (and not just those with crying babies) which was distracting, and people came in off the street well after Mass started. read more

Noon mass is a little dry and the Filipino priest is not that easy to understand at times but it's a nice building and has convenient daily mass schedules Across the street is the Don Quixote store. This is like a Japanese Target and you must go to this place. The plate lunch BBQ place in front wasn't that great so you might try the one inside but they have amazing things in there so go after mass. read more

I used to like this church. I can't believe that they close their doors at 8 or most of the time, before 8 a.m. I understand their concerns about vandalism maybe , but I think they are afraid of the "homeless" population. Why? We are all Gods people. Anyone who needs to talk to God should have a place to do so. They are so focused on bulletin announcements , introducing "visiting parishioners " (they don't need to tell their first and last name and where they are from or let alone, bring the microphone to them) . Have them all stand up and say "welcome to our parish". Done! Their bulletin announcement consists of 8 or 10 pages. Do you know how expensive their printing bill must be? Save the money to feed the poor instead. Money collection every week for renovation ? Your church is great the way it is. You don't need to do stained glass. No matter how nice the church is from outside, it's the inside that matters. Music is terrible. No smile from anyone there. Fr. Khan and his church staff members needs to know what is important , helping others especially those less fortunate. They sure lack of it. ( Father Scott Bush is very nice , I like him) read more

Contemporary Choir is great at St Peter & Paul Church. The usual music minister (a woman) has produced a CD (ok quality) of the choir for church enjoyment. Meant as a Christmas Album, the choir recorded a pretty good sound recording of upbeat church music that is usually played at their masses when they perform/ sing on regular weekends. They are not there all the time though- sometimes (Sunday mornings early) there is the piano/ organ music at the toned down level. Some of the priests are from other Pacific Islands. Their English sometimes is less than desirable and hard to listen to (as an ESL teacher by trade- if it is hard for me to understand them - it is near impossible for others- sometimes I wish they took the mass in latin and then we would have no problem as we just read along and not pay attention to the spoken words). Parking is great- there are many helpers that direct traffic and make it as easy as possible. There used to be open parking in the HI USA bank behind the church but that seems to be not the case anymore- there is the lot behind the church that the parking helpers will guide cars to and another lot behind that if pressed for parking. There is sign language for the hearing impaired or those that are practicing their ASL on Sunday mornings at 11 am currently. The church does welcome (tries to to those that come on time) guests to the islands with a shell lei and greeting. There are all of the normal sacraments- again call. The youth ministry is small compared to what I was used to - there is CCD and a few other events during the year. Again call and ask what is offered that you are specifically interested in before being let down. There is renovation going on and planned in the coming future as well. Sometimes there could be construction machinery coned off- again - any questions call the church. Down side- if you have small children there is little to no room in the church to walk with a big size stroller. Many isles are meant just for walking adults (as it is a regular church with wooden pews designed long long ago). There are normal chairs set up on the outside walls- but many people just sit in the chairs. It is hard if you have young young children, that want attention or are noise-y. Babies are cute when they sleep - two year olds can be disruptive during prayers. Just saying- I was spoiled in the Chicagoland area where churches have preschool play rooms or quiet glassed off rooms where little kids do not bother praying adults. To the fellow Yelper- that may have posted hurtful/ negative info about the church priests: Hawaii IMO has more open homelessness than many other parts of America because HI has year round open nice weather. Many of the homeless do take to camping out in one spot in general. One could blame Pres. Regan that allowed all of the mentally ill out of care facilities and wander the streets homeless that really did need to be housed and on prescription medication. If you feel that there is neglect or abuse- please feel free to call the police regarding police incidents. Hawaii does have, and Honolulu in particular, one of the largest amounts of laws against homelessness on record across America- it is down to enforcement and charity in this case. Please- what you did fail to mention is that the Church- St Peter & Paul- does have a 'soup kitchen' the church does feed low- income families with food. I don't know the hours but if you call the receptionist or see the bulletin there would be details of the assistance. read more

Lack of spiritual and unfriendly environment. The new vietnamese priest is non-welcoming. The congregation is lacking something . . . I went to weekly mass there when I am in Honolulu. The music has changed there. What happened? They claim to be a welcoming church; I'm sorry . . . I didn't feel welcomed. The church is in the city where many homeless live. The church's outreach program is not how it was. The priest seems to not care about the congregation. He seems more in tune with his sermon, rather than focusing on his parishioners and visitors. Blind honest truth . . . their mission statement does not reflect how they really are. The congregation seems like they are just going through the motions. read more

Been going to this church for almost a year now, and I love it! It's located right across of Don Quijote. The people here are friendly, and so are the priests. At the very beginning of the mass, they'll ask visitors/new comers to stand so they can be recognized and given a shell lei. The very first time I came, I was a little late so I missed the part where they welcome visitors. It's so cool to hear where people are visiting from. I honestly never realized that people still go to church when on vacation. We've had visitors from across the U.S. and others from various countries, like Germany, Poland , the Philippines etc. Now on to the mass: if it's been a while since you've attended church, no worries, there's a book in the pews that goes over the schedule of things. At the end of the mass, sometimes they'll invite those who are celebrating birthdays or wedding anniversaries up to the front to receive blessings. This part is super cute because the church will briefly sing "Happy Birthday." With those celebrating wedding anniversaries, it's cool to hear about how long they've been married and just see how in love they are. read more

My husband and I attended here on 9/7/14, our one year wedding anniversary! We were vacationing, and I had picked the closest parish to our hotel. As it turned out, the main colors in the stained glass windows were teal and orange--which had been our wedding colors! Visitors are asked to stand, and get a shell lei. I loved the community. Going to mass felt like one of my most authentic experiences in Honolulu (not a knock on ANYTHING we did, just a great opportunity to immerse myself among people who actually live there), and I'm so glad we went where we did. Catholic church allows animal cruelty to take place on their property! In the parking lot of this church is a mentally ill homeless woman who has a bunch of sick and malnourished cats and kittens stuffed in a tiny metal cage. They were sitting in their feces and some of them had obvious skin problems. I watched them for several days and noticed that she never took them out of the cage. There is a blue plastic picnic sheet covered on them to hide the cage. I went to go check on the animals and was attacked by the woman. I told her in a very polite way that this was cruel, and she grabbed herself in a rude manner and began cursing at me and threatening me. I gave up on trying to talk to her and spoke with the priest of the church. I asked him what he thought of the situation and if the church could call an animal welfare group to come take the cats. He said "human beings are more important than animals. The homeless woman is protective of her cats and it would be stealing to take them away from her". I told him that I didn't think it was right that a Catholic church would allow cruelty to happen on their property, property that they have only because followers have given their money to the church. As a former Catholic who used to put money in the basket every week for years, I am disgusted to see that my money has gone to funding places like this. Because the priests at this church allow this, the humane society does not go in and take the cats away. The humane society has come to see the situation and they say she is keeping the cats in a cage that is legally big enough. If she were doing this else where and the owners of the property complained, they would go in and take the cats. Because the church allows this, she continues to abuse animals. Hopefully if enough people complain, we can help these poor innocent cats, who deserve proper shelter, proper food, a proper place to relieve themselves, hospital care, vaccinations, and neutering/spaying. Since there were many little kittens in the cage, I believe that she may be letting the cats breed in the small cage. Peter & Paul Church and your priests, shame on you. Hopefully enough people call your church, the humane society, and anyone else they can to complain until we can put a stop to this cruelty. read more

May I say, their Contemporary Choir is WONDERFUL. Best contemporary choir on the island IMO. I'm not sure if the choir is the same at all masses, but I've only attended their 11AM mass. I live in Waipahu, but I usually come here only if I plan on going to Ala Moana which is right down the street, or if I want to get japanese stuff at Don Quijote which is right across the street. Edit--I did manage to come here recently and attend the 6PM Mass, and might I say it is the same Choir as the 11AM. It's great! read more

This is a nice church. I haven't really attended here much accept when I help out my friend down here. The parking might be tough sometimes though. The location is awesome though, so after mass you have a choice to walk across the street for food at the Don Quijote food court or other food places near by. Other than that there is not much I can say right now until I do more stuff here. But from what I experienced during my times here it has been pleasant. read more
