I came up to Hartford for the Discover Hartford 40-mile bike ride on my way to Boston for the Hub on Wheels ride. With a mile or so left in the Hartford ride I hit a small rock and tore the rear tire. The tube blew out through the tire, wrecking the tire. The rim hit the street and wrecked the rim. Here I was, 130 miles from home with one more ride planned and I had a disabled bike. A friend of a friend recommended Central Wheel. I carried my bike in to the shop and they quickly came over and assessed the damage. The wheel was shot, irreparably damaged. They told me they would see if there was any way they could help me. They dug around in storage and found a good quality used rear wheel and tire and quickly trued it up, transferred my rear cassette (gears), adjusted the brakes and derailleur and had my bike back to ride-able condition. Thanks to their efforts for this complete stranger I was able to ride the Boston Hub on Wheels ride. They sold me the wheel and all the service for what I consider a reasonable cost and also serviced my friends bike (broken seat clamp) while they were at it. This is a shop located near the reservoir on Farmington Ave. I visited and was waited on by the owner and some helpers. The shop was bustling with customers when I visited, it took a while to figure out what I needed. In the end, they emailed me a quote while I was there. Very helpful bunch. Midsized shop. They cater to serious riders who are interested in mountain biking and road racing but they also offer a couple lines of moderately priced bikes. Nice helpful folks. They also rent bikes there if you want to take a Friend along on a ride but they don't have a bike, they can set you up. read more

Purchased my mountain bike here last fall. The staff was very meticulous in making sure the bike was a fit for my body measurements. They special-ordered the bike, and accommodated every request I had - wheel size, type of frame, brand of shocks, etc.. They also gave the bike a free tune-up after 3 months of hardcore riding. Shortly after, I attended a very useful tire-changing clinic, taught by the shop owner. Last summer, they fixed the gear switching system (which I thought was beyond repair) on my old beater bike. If they can fix that, they can fix anything. The staff members have a lot of riding experience, so I've gotten a lot of tips and riding advice at Central Wheel. read more

Looking for a derailleur hangar for a 2018 Cannondale Slate. Called 7 shops in CT and they were the only one with the part in stock. Drove an hour to get there and was super surprised with the service. End of day Friday, they went the extra mile to install the part and tune my derailleur. What they charged me for the hangar and install and tune was less than what I can buy the same part for online. I have been in Hartford,CT working the past few months and about to purchase a bike. I called ahead and reserved a bike to rent for a mini trialthon I was doing at winding trails and was testing it out to buy. I came to the trialthon and they didn't even show up with the bike. I was left not able to try the bike I was thinking of buying. I called and called trying to see where they were abs was left not able to do the trialthon . Save your time and go to Newington bicycle. There aren't many options when it comes to bike rentals in CT, so we were thrilled when we found out about Central Wheel. It was a brilliant weekend for a ride around town. The staff was friendly and made every effort to provide us with appropriately-sized and comfortable bikes. The bikes were equipped with spare tubes as well. The place is conveniently located--only a hop away from the West Hartford Reservoir and a moderate putt to the nearby town of Farmington and access to the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail. Parking in the store's lot can be limited depending on what time of day you stop in, but we had no trouble at 11am on a Saturday. We made it out and back before close of business and had a grand time. Our only regret was not starting the day earlier. There was so much to explore, especially along the heritage trail--I'd highly recommend it! For those who are interested in buying, if you make a bike purchase within the same month that you rent, you get a discount too! read more

Was in town visiting the in-laws, and I rented a mountain bike from these guys. The service was friendly, efficient, no glitches. The bike was tuned perfectly, (Carbon Cannondale Habit) and cost 1/2 of what an equivalent demo would cost in Moab! (Please don't go changing that!).had a great chat with the owner, and will always use these guys when I visit (and hopefully ride with them!). Let me just start this review by saying that i have never written a review for any company before. I made a yelp account specifically to share my experience at Central Wheel. I took my MTB in to get 5 bolts tightened with a torque wrench cause i did not have one. Immediately after handing my bike over the owner tried telling me that they were going to have to keep the bike over night because of how busy the shop was..... there were four employees and one bike on a stand being worked on. One of the employees ended up taking my bike to go tighten the bolts saying it wouldn't take more than 20 min and that it was not a problem. This is where the experience started to go sour. I started to browse the shop and within a minute was approached by the store owner/manger who stated "were just gonna have you go next door to the liquor store and pick up a six pack for him". As weird as the request was i planned on throwing the guy money anyways for tightening the bolts so i picked up the beer.(there is a liquor store right next door) After no more than 10 minutes of being in the back to tighten the bolts my bike was back upfront and i handed the guy the pack of beer and 8 bucks for the favor. His response was "thanks man ill take you upfront and cash you out". My jaw naturally slapped the ground in amazement from what my ears just heard. The fee for tightening the bolts was $20. The Owner made me feel as if fixing my bike was above and beyond their daily duty as a BIKE SHOP. This is either the most expensive bike shop i have even been to in my life or the most entitled. The whole experience was unprofessional and not to be expected from a fellow cyclist. Do yourself a favor and listen to Mitch go to Newington Cycles.... or any other bike shop for that matter just not here. read more

I'd really like to say that this is a great bike shop because they are very conveniently located near West Hartford Res and have a nice selection of bikes/parts and, for the most part, the staff is friendly. However, I'm disappointed in their service which is generally overpriced, and they refuse to quote even "ballpark" figures for repair work over the phone. Their standard response is "bring it in so our expert can look at it". While this may generate more business for them once a customer is in the store, it is a deterrent for most of us with busy lives Every other LBS in the area quotes figures for repair work over the phone, so why not Central Wheel? As the other reviewer said, they cater towards high-end riders and some of the CSRs can come off as a bit arrogant if you ask what they consider a novice question. Recommend only if you are riding in the area and need emergency service. read more

Imagine bringing two young people from Germany to rent bikes for a week from a bike shop you had never done business with. In this case the owner decided he needed to be sure they were renting the correct bikes for their journey through New England. The service we received was second to none.
