Located near the VT/NY border this is a fantastic salon. I just moved back to Bennington Vermont the other day and was in desperate need of the grooming I haven't kept up on for the past few months while house hunting, packing, moving and now unpacking. I needed a break to make myself feel more like, well, myself - and I got it. I made an appointment with Sara for 4 pm. I have known Sara for years and was actually her first haircut when she was in hair school but that was the first and only time she cut my hair - and it was just a little more than a trim. Yesterday, though, was the whole shebang: color, cut, wax... and, friend or not, it was fantastic. Sara blended the haircolor to match, processed long enough to cover my very stubborn grey streak, and cut it EXACTLY how I wanted. She also waxed my brows and a few randoms on my face. My brows are a nightmare between a scar on my left one and also a few hairs that kind of hide but are long and will stick out randomly. Not only did she wax but she cleaned up with tweezers and scissors - her meticulous nature is exactly what I love in a stylist. Sara was also very understanding that I am officiating a wedding in a month so I needed the cut to be more about cutting out some bulk in the back (I have a LOT of hair) but keeping the front essentially the same so that I can easily have my hair blown out the day of the wedding. In addition to Sara's expertise, the shop is GREAT. I love the aesthetic - lots of wood and instead of traditional stations stylists have beautiful old hutches. There are lots of other things going on in the shop from nutrition counseling and art therapy to massages and tarot. I'm really looking forward to checking out more about it and also doing something a little more exciting with my hair the next time I go see Sara - maybe a pop of color for the fall!

After my haircut was over he had to let me know that he cut the back of my hair because it would look like a mushroom. I was a bit upset with this because this entire haircut was an undercut and none of my actually hair was going to be cut, just the fade. Once I got home, I took a shower and realized that he had actually cut off a lot of the sides of the hair. I'm highly disappointed because almost every other time I've gone there its been amazing, but when you don't just listen to what you're supposed to and do your job is upsetting. Dad has been going to see Larry on Washington Street for over 15 years, and so that's where we go. He confides that it's really not a place for girls, and so he never asks my sister to take him -- only me. Haha Larry's is one of those classic institutions (Mayberry RFD-style), where you go inside, join the conversation of the day (usually sports or politics), and wait your turn for one of the two chairs in the shop. There's no frou-frou hair-washing, blow-drying, "product in the hair" kinda of stuff. This is your basic, scissors or razor-cut kind of place, and that's the way my Dad likes it. Larry has been standing behind his chair for many years, and he and my Dad have struck up quite the friendship. They always joke about "lowering his ears", and making him presentable for the ladies at his Adult living center. Larry remembers me as "Joe's son from Florida who knows all about restaurants", which is pretty awesome considering that I'm there maybe twice a year. Dad is usually in and out in about 20 minutes, and he tells me that it's one of his favorite parts of my trip up to see him. With Larry's help we plot out a new place to try for lunch after Dad's haircut, and that makes for a great afternoon with my Dad. I really enjoy the camaraderie of Larry and his fellow patrons, and I know that it's a special time for my Dad.

Of the four times I've been there it's been a repeat plot: men patiently and quietly wait for their turn, after settling into the chair they nicely ask for their haircut, and then the barber obliges them with a slightly longer than requested hair cut. At $10 with tip it's fair for the area and gets the job done. There aren't any gimmicks: it's just good guys cutting hair and passing some time with you.
