Today, however, I had the inestimable pleasure of perfect seats at the Central City Opera house to witness the most perfect rendition of The Barber of Seville I've ever seen. Everything was simply perfect; the set, the costuming, the musicians, the director, and above all, the perfectly cast singer/actors. There was not one weak link among them. They not only sang the parts perfectly, they were physically perfect for their roles. I don't know why the DCPA has so much trouble casting (especially sopranos), but the CCO simply nailed each and every one; no fat sopranos or geriatric tenors bumbling around the stage playing the parts of lithe heroines or young militiamen. My hat's off to the casting director!! (The ONLY suggestion I'd make (and this is nigh on trivial) is to ask the musicians in the pit to PLEASE aim their music stand lighting down toward them instead of aiming it up in the eyes of the first five rows of the audience; the light was blinding. Thanks.) It is ABSOLUTELY worth the drive up to Central City to see this production if you can still snag tix at this late date. You'll be glad you did.

Considering the Opera House was open a year before Gilbert and Sullivan premiered it in 1879 it was a perfect match and we were spoiled by the production and the ambiance of the house!

Not only did he hit all the right notes, but Fields displayed a charisma and acting ability that read beautifully to even the farthest seats from the Lincoln Center Main Stage. Fort Collins-grown soprano Tiffany Blake proved Opera Fort Collins needn't always go far afield to find top-notch performers. Her voice and acting rarely missed a beat as her character descended into the very grips of hell. Makeup and hair by Rebecca Spafford, combined with costumes by Ursula Lynch created an atmosphere that transcended the need for extensive scenery.

Way to go Fort Collins Opera Guild. I got a crappy seat to see Ballad of Baby Doe for $40. I've bought tickets for crappy seats at the Met for $30 and okay seats at the SF Opera for the same amount. Not happy there (esp since I took a date too), but I know they don't put on productions for several weeks at a time and sell out thousands of seats each time like the big city companies do. Overall, I enjoyed the opera very much and will absolutely attend future productions, but since I payed $40 for my ticket and was bugged by a few things, I'm going to make myself feel better with a mild rant/fume. The principal singers are very good, but there is a large gap in talent between them and the singers who perform smaller roles. It's obvious who the hired guns are on stage. The stage managing was so distracting. One of the backstage stage managers was completely visible from my seat and she wasn't even trying to hide herself or the other singers who were awaiting cues; in fact, people were even dancing in sight backstage at times. If you can see the audience, they can see you, people! At one point, a stage tech slowly popped his entire head out from behind a moving set in the middle of a gripping aria. Several people in the audience laughed. The director works so hard to put together a wonderful show (bravo!), it's a shame that these small but blazing stage errors can subtract from the production as much as they do. Also, the stage at Lincoln Center absorbs most of the sound if a singer doesn't directly face the audience. They ought to include acoustic shells in the set somehow. The pit orchestra is legit, minus the blaring tuba player (it's okay, he only plays a dozen notes the entire time and gets paid as much as anyone else) and a few flat releases at the ends of decrescendi from the winds...and I just achieved a new level of d-baggery with that comment. The conductor pretty much stuck to the instrumentalists. My bartender made a pretty good Manhattan. Again, enjoy that glass of wine or cocktail beforehand and your experience will be just fine.

Very hard to sit on, and it tilts to a weird angle so I always leave there w a sore lower back.... I hope they can address that the next time they are looking to remodel. I recently learned that the system has been changed and subscribers are no longer guaranteed their seats from year to year. This is extremely disappointing. Long-time patrons like myself have supported the SCO with thousands of dollars over the years, and the ability to retain our seats felt like a small but meaningful acknowledgment of that loyalty. With this change, that benefit has been taken away. Unfortunately, that makes it difficult for me to justify continuing my subscription. There are many cultural organizations and symphonies that value and appreciate long-time patrons, and I will be exploring those options instead. A followup...I received a reply on the Yelp review from a rep from the CSO stating that I could absolutely renew and keep my seats. I have the first email from the CSO office stating there was no guarantee I could keep the same seats. I responded to that email stating I would not renew if I could not keep the same seats. The next email from the CSO office stated that those seats were still available for the POPS Series and I could have them for 4 of the 5 shows, but the 5th show I would need to move. Again, I have the emails from the CSO office.

The staff should've cut her margaritas off earlier. The seats were terribly uncomfortable. Would we go again? Probably. It's affordable and we can opt to not eat there.

From there to Macky is a 10 minute walk in nice weather. There has not been new snow since the cleanup a couple of days ago. We had tix to the College of Music's Holiday Festival and what a joyous musical celebration it was. We had gone a few times decades ago and decided to skip it for a while. But now it's a truly inclusive holiday program with incredible student faculty talent and as well as modern technology for lighting, sound and visual screen displays. In the past it seemed a bland Christmas only music program. We had decent seats in Orchestra Right with a few short people like us and some no-shows in the row in front of us. Just lucky I guess as the place was packed and most of the shows completely sold out. The venue is beautiful and seats about 2000 in classic design and well maintained. No recordings or photos allowed during the program. There were hundreds of student in the instrumental groups as well as vocal choirs. There were two conductors splitting the performances, one a man and for us, the first time a woman conductor though she said this was her 8th year in the program. Both were excellent. The student groups too, had lots of talent, from the Jazz singers and instrumentalists to the various choir groups. The bassoon ensemble did a great performance of a collection of Nutcracker pieces backed up with choreographed videos of nutcracker drawings. There was a beautiful rendition of This Little Light of Mine by members of the University Choir with solos by a terrific tenor. There was also a reading of The Night Before Christmas and a little boy in the row in front of us fell asleep. We had left at the end before he woke up and realized it was not yet Christmas. There was a Klezmer group led by a clarinetist with untalented singers and dancers. There was also a West African Ensemble leading an uplifting piece of music with the University Choir and incredible lighting and special effects. The program ended with a traditional Handel's Messiah with audience participation for the Hallelujah Chorus. I am so glad we went and so proud of CU for having such a more matured and talented Holiday program than we had ever seen before.

And we were impressed with the script, the acting, the wardrobe changes and the amount of energy and excitement that was displayed from beginning to end! You won't nod off, take a nap or be disappointed! We laughed out loud and loved the show! Now I enjoy the beauty of other people bending their bodies in ways I cannot even imagine. We came to see Fancy Footwork which was a fundraiser for the dancers to apply for various grants. Fancy Footwork was a series of short 2-5 minute dances that were a combination of classic and modern dance. In short- we LOVED it! I love not knowing what is coming next. The modern dance which typically I am less a fan of then the classics was jaw droopingly gorgeous and creative. The studio on Santa Fe is also small and intimate and the audience sat in a bleacher style set up that made for a really special night.
