The rates they charge for events are very reasonable. Reaching someone from their office is always fairly easy and they get back to me very quickly, whether I'm using email or phone. I book the Wharfinger for a winter dance at the end of each January. Staff provides me with a layout of their venue along with a list of the furniture items they have available for my use. I then create a layout design using their template explaining what tables and chairs I would like to utilize and where I would like them placed. I usually take a group of students with me to decorate the venue about 5 hours or so before our event is set to begin. Staff always has my requested layout design ready to go, allowing me to just show up and decorate. I opt to pay a bit extra for use of the kitchen facility. I put all drinks and perishable items in their industrial refrigerators, giving them plenty of time to cool before the event, alleviating the need for me to deal with ice. One less thing to do while chaperoning! There are small hooks around the ceiling trim of the building, which makes it very easy to string up lights. We are allowed to tape items to the walls as long as we use painter's tape, and we are also able to string up lights around the patio rails of their back deck. This allows us to create an ambient atmosphere behind the venue overlooking the water. Students often enjoy taking breaks from dancing and hanging out on this patio area to cool off. Staff on hand during events are always incredibly helpful, and assist me in anything I need. Explanations are very thorough when I'm signing off on forms at the end of the event, and they make it very clear what is expected of me during cleanup in order to get our security deposit back after the event. Staff has also been happy to let me borrow a ladder or an extension cord if I needed one, and it's wonderful to have employees on hand in case I have any questions or needs that arise. This is a hassle free venue that I will continue to use year after year.

Located very close to the city of Eureka in far North Coast of California, Manila California is a…read moresmall unincorporated census-designated place, situated on the Samoa Peninsula. My wife, her mom, and I stopped by their community center and found it to be a quiet place to visit, with plenty of parking and easy access to the Pacific Ocean. Manila, California was founded in the early 1900's, named after the capital of the Philippines. After the defeat of the Spanish fleet at the Battle of Manila (effectively ending the Spanish rule over its colony in 1898), up to 12 towns in the U.S. were named Manila. This community center was initially built in the 50's as an elementary school, and later converted into a center that now houses a Montessori school and Manila Community District. It has a large children's playground with jungle gyms and slides, plenty of car parking, accessible restrooms from the outside, along with an outdoor basketball court with two baskets. It is also close to the Manila Dunes Recreation Area, with sandy trails leading to the shoreline. My wife noticed the street address of the center (1611), which has significance as the founding year of the first university in the Philippines (University of Santo Tomas). It's a special point of pride for my wife's mom, since that is her alma mater.
