Good god damn is this some tasty indian food. The Cedars house variety of naan, for instance, is amazing and the best I've had anywhere. After the completely delicious meal I've had here today, I've had to reduce the score of every other local indian restaurant by one star. If that wasn't enough, they have a rotating selection of beers of the world available. A lot of their staff doesn't speak any language that I do, but the waiters do, so who cares. A great place. This is back when dairy wasn't my sworn enemy. From the moment the cup of chai arrives at your table, you will never lack for a refill. Ever. Chug the chai as fast as you can, a waiter will appear with a pitcher to fill your cup again. On and on this game will continue throughout your meal. Until the bill comes. Then the chai stops flowing. And you wonder, where is the chai? Then the shakes come; they're the worst. TIP: Bring a large thermos and a canvas bag for concealment. read more

Again very disappointed with the staff and owner. I reluctantly went to Cedars for a friends birthday, just to be met with rude staff that didn't want to take time to explain to me the difference in food. It almost seemed like i was bothering them. nothing was good besides their smoothies but I'm sure a bunch of toddlers could make those. I wouldn't eat here again if someone paid me to. Russell Wilson and the entire Seahawks roster wouldn't get me to eat there, thats how bad their service and food was. first off the guy at the counter (i'm guessing he's the owner?) is SOOOO nice. i asked what music they were playing and he went out of his way to write down the artist's name and cd title. I had to ask for my money back from Cedar's today, because the takeout I took home was THAT bad. I usually am not a huge complainer when it comes to trying new restaurants because you have to understand you're not going to like everything. I got the salmon sandwich, and found two hairs in it, as well as the thing was completely falling apart, it didnt even look like a sandwich, but rather, a pile of goo. Was there salmon in it? I have no idea, because there was about a pound of raw green peppers in it which they did not mention on the menu. There was more sauce on the sandwich than actual meat or toppings. I had to throw it away once I saw the hairs though. I was really disappointed, because this place looked really nice and I wanted to like it. Sad to say, I will not be back. read more

Diminishing returns. After 30 years these last two visits were the worst. Poor help is coupled with disorganization. Bringing entrees first. Appetizers without the bread. The worst crime is the lowered quality of the meat. Lamb beef and chicken. This last time was with a group that had good memories from college that were dashed. The staff is nice but inefficient. Food: 3.5/5: Tandoori Chicken 3/5- while the chicken itself was tender and cooked well, there was a lack of flavor that I wasn't expecting. We opted to get extra fresh veggies instead of rice, they were well cooked and had a good flavor - be aware their veggie mix includes a lot of potatoes. Keema Kebab - 5/5 - these were so good! I wish we had more of this and less of the chicken. Similar to kofta, but with a slightly different mixture of spices. The spice mixture they use is great, really flavorful without being overpowering. I almost see no point in writing a review for this place because it's so good and so well loved that there's very little I could add that hasn't been said before. Then again, it's so good that I don't care, I'll contribute anyway to their already enormous stream of praise. This place is good. So good that a review wouldn't really do it justice. A love letter is what this place deserves. The food here is delicious and the portions are very decent for the price. They make exceptional samosas-- at Cedars, you get them fresh and crispy and expertly spiced, resting on a bed of lettuce. But just about everything I've tried at Cedars-- which includes various chicken dishes, a lamb dish, and aloo gobi-- has been delicious and extremely satisfying. I'm not especially enthusiastic about their dal, but I'm fanatical about everything else they make. The roti. The rice. The... everything. Very very good Indian food with large portions! As many people have pointed out, the naan bread spills over the not-even-that-small of a plate that it's served in and even after ripping off piece after piece, it hardly seems any smaller than when it came out. However, most people forget to mention that the actual entrees are also gigantic. I got the tandoori chicken and it came with such a huge pile of rice, I felt like I couldn't move anything without some falling off onto the table. Now I'm a fan of large portions of food like anyone else, but I was really missing out on something to pair the rice with. Don't get me wrong, the tandoori chicken was spiced really well and wasn't too dry (it was just a little hard to cut without spilling even more rice). But the vegetables it came with were a little pathetic. It was like four carrots and like 10 slices of potatoes. Now it probably wouldn't have been as much of an issue with a curry dish where you can mix it in the rice, but for the tandoori chicken, there was just too much plain rice hanging out. The price is a little much, but you are getting a lot of food -- you can definitely take home a hefty amount of naan bread and rice. Also, the space in the restaurant (much like the space on your plate) just doesn't seem enough. So, I'm a tad conflicted. I think Cedars deserves a 5 star rating, cause their food was flippin' fantastic, but I think the fact that I felt like a sardine due to the seating arrangements there makes me give them only 4 stars.... Food= 5 stars. Their naan was amazing, and the sauce(s) you dip it in were good too, the green one is cilantro something I think and then there's a soy sauce looking one that I think tastes like cherry or plum kinda. For the record I hate cilantro anything, and I tolerated their green sauce. That says a lot. :) I think our table set the Guiness record for Quickest Time to Eat Naan. Fact. Both pieces (both HUGE pieces) were devoured in like 1.2 seconds by 8 people. I got the mango lemonade, and honestly it was quite thick for my liking. It was still good and I finished it before my meal even came, but it was really thick. Their chai is amazing, I tried a sip of my tablemate's and yummm... I ordered the Chicken Boti Kabob and it delicious. Just an fyi, I think the kabobs take longer to make then other dishes because me and another friend both ordered kabobs and were the last to get our meals out of our table. I tried a bite of the Butter Chicken, it was one of the best dishes at the table. I tried the sausage-like meat off the Tandoori Surprise and I didn't care for it that much, but the beef (i think it was beef..) on that plate was very tasty. The Tandoori Chicken was super good as well. They had a surprisingly nice selection of craft beers! I've been going to Cedars since my college days at UW. It's by far one of the best Indian restaurants on the West coast, from Vancouver to SD, I've never found any naan so fluffy and chai so tasty. It is true that this place does have long waits and hurried service at times, but it's more due to the fact that this place is so freaking popular than the ownership not caring. As mentioned several times on this thread, they have a sister restaurant, Taste of India, just a couple blocks away if you want a less hectic dining experience. Overall, the place is great: there is free parking, the food is always consistently delicious, and my stomach is always happy after a meal at Cedars. SOMETIMES A LONG REVIEW IS NOT NEEDED FOR SOMETHING THAT IS SO DELICIOUS. My two Favorites here are: Butter Chicken- smothered in a rich Indian butter sauce almost like a gravy texture which I love compared to the watery texture of most places. Mango Curry with Chicken- The sweetness of the mango goes nicely with the spiciness of the curry! The portions are quite large compared to most Indian Restaurants and the prices are the same. The only disappointment is that this joint does not offer a lunch buffet (assuming cause they know they are pretty damn good!) By far my favorite Indian Joint! We were looking for a quick meal before a show at the Neptune and we found this place. I mean...WE found this place...everyone else already knows about it because it was rocking--and with good reason. The place was a bit crowded and we waited a little for a table to free up, but that's to be expected on a Friday night. Once seated we ordered up some naan as an appetizer (excellent and HUGE) and moved on to some chicken tikka masala along with some tea, which was also great. Even given the crowds it was relatively fast service, though I had to poach some silverware from a nearby table after my server disappeared. Why do women like Cedars so much? There is a pattern in my life. It involves me meeting women, and them telling me just how much they love Cedars. There is some evidence indicating that this phenomenon is not limited to me. But I digress. I was unable to finish my last two meals at Cedars. They were just that bad. The food is overwhelmingly greasy, the naan is made with the wrong flour and has a strange texture, the lamb is tough and the vindaloo is just eh. The "steamed rice" is invariably fried, greasy and disgusting. The reason why cedars and a number of other indian restaurants do this is because it allows them to cook their rice just once or twice in a day and then just "refresh" it by refrying it just before serving. The dal maharani is okay and so is the paneer tikka. There is also some value to endless cups of free chai. The little spice store that they run as part of the restaurant is insanely overpriced, as in some things are 200%-300% more expensive than other indian grocery stores. Not a place I recommend to friends looking for a place to eat Indian food. read more

I'm a big fan of quality over quantity. But, when you can have both quality and quantity it's like heaven. This is what I experienced when I dined at this fine establishment last week along with my wife. We ordered a mix of things.. the sampler appetizer, a salad, some raita, a naan and the paneer tikka masala. About 6 minutes after ordering the food started coming from the kitchen .. bam, salad.. bam, appetizer, bam bam, everything else. I looked at my wife then I looked down at the table and we both just started eating. Everything was delicious and there were even some surprises such as the middle eastern items on the appetizer that added to our enjoyment. We were unable to finish all the food so we gladly took half the naan (which was about the size of a small pizza) and half the entree home. The waitstaff was gracious and courteous and _quick_. Yeah, it was sorta crowded as others have said. I can also agree that parking in the neighborhood would be a pain, but we took the bus. I highly recommend this place. A waste of time and money on a beautiful friday night. The worst service I've ever had, with the waiter bringing the check halfway through dinner and returning every 5 minutes to check if we had paid (including opening the bill and complaining we hadn't put cards yet). When we had our credit cards out, he screamed impatiently for us to "choose already what cards you're using" By the way, the same waiter brought different dishes than the ones we ordered, and we were cool enough to accept them as it was. I should've written a review for this place long ago, but after one of the worst dining experiences of my life, I think my mind kind of blocked it off lol. This place ranks among the absolute worst service I've ever experienced. I can hardly remember ever being so thoroughly enraged, starting with the rude hostess (owner's daughter I believe) to the manager, and even the waiters and waitresses that literally threw our entrees down on the table with a flick of the wrist as they passed by without even slowing down. No complaints about the food, but the absolutely horrid service just put way too much of a damper on the rest of the experience. Doesn't matter if it's a lunch/dinner rush, or if it's a packed house...the so-called service we received was just so inexcusably bad, I've been warning people off of this place ever since. read more

Soooo yummy... my very favorite Indian restaurant in Seattle (also the first Indian food I ever ate). I stop here *every* time I visit Seattle. The restaurant is in a big old (slightly) remodeled house which gives it a nice cozy atmosphere. Service is great but watch the refills on Chai, it's easy to OD. I'm a huge fan of the Paneer Tikka Masala and Garlic Naan. There are a few things you should know: * It's owned by the same family as Taste of India. * Servers don't get tips (but they get a good hourly wage). * Beware the soapy dessert they deliver with the check. * Rumor has it they sneak heroine into the Masala sauce which totally explains its addictive properties :) read more

SeDarz. This is how we pronounced it in college. Because we were cool. This use to be my go to Indian Food place. Use to. It had been a while and I recently revisited. Things have changed. In the past the service was always top notch. I never was able to get my chai tea past the half way point. It became a challenge, can I get this cup empty before they refill? I'd always leave having consumed over 8 cups of chai and never once 'winning'. As I said..things have changed. The service is not the same (during our past visit our chai sat empty for half the meal) and we had to ask about 3 times to get new plates for our food. I was also somewhat annoyed that the guy who took our order (I'm pretty sure the owner) was rather annoyed that we were getting only two entrees (despite plenty of naan and other appetizers). It's fairly easy to be a cheap place. Just look at Taco Bell. Some basic ground beef, sad iceburg lettuce and pre-sliced cheese and sell it for a cheap price. Cars line up in the drive through at 1 am. It's a little harder to be a good place. Sure, if you put enough time into it or hire Tom Douglas as your chef, you can probably get it done. But in a way it's even harder to be a cheap, good place and that's what Cedars has done. If you judged it just on location, you might be dissuaded from the restaurant: the deck is a bit beat up, the carpet is a little bit faded and some of the tables are rickety. What they've done though, is put their effort into the food and the (let's call it "low key") housings of the restaurant help keep the prices down. As long as you're not looking for ambiance (maybe not the best first date choice?), Cedars is a good option. I haven't really had a bad dish here. The Samosas are wonderful, naan is opulently garlic-flavored and the chicken masalas are great. But my favorite? Try the vegetable Royal Biryani here. It's a gigantic portion with a fabulous sauce. I almost want to order two every time to take some home. And I'll finish with progressively shorter sentences: The servers are quick and friendly. Prices are very reasonable. Food is good. The service is a bit sketchy I never know who's who but I will say my water glass never goes empty someone is always over filling it up. When I worked in the neighborhood I hit Cedars up a few times for lunch. There is a plethora of Indian restaurants in the UDistrict, and I feel this one is one of the better, cleaner ones. The food always tastes fresh and it is very good. The service can be really slow and un-attentive sometimes. They do a decent tandoori chicken, and they serve side salads. I never did try one of their curries, so i can't vouch for that, their naan isn't bad, either. There's also another Cedar's in the UDistrict closer to the post office, this is the location across from the creepy UWay Safeway. It's a lot less scary looking than the former. If it were two years ago that I wrote this review it would be glowing except for the fact that there's too much customer service. Can you really have such a thing? Of course. My water used to filled every few minutes and it hadn't even lowered 3/4 of the way. Total conversation breaker. Anyway, the owners changed since and the food is still good but now the service has dropped from over doing it to under doing it. Last time I was in there, there were two tables around me complaining to the staff about missed orders or lack of service, including my own. That's the only time I had lunch there and had their gyro which didn't live up to my expectations. I haven't been back since. For two years I lived less than a block away from this place, so I ate here maybe 3 or 4 times a month. Come for the food, not the service. Before the restaurant changed ownership sometime last year, the service was average at best (with the exception of chai refills, which were awesome). Now, it's always slow. But that doesn't matter, because this is some of the best Indian food I've had. I don't think there's one single thing on the menu that I've tried and haven't liked. All of the curries are delicious and come in large portions, and the tandoori dishes are all cooked perfectly. Also, as previously stated, servers don't get tips. I asked about this once, and our server informed me that they are instead compensated by being paid higher than average wages. So I still tip. But not as much. read more

Never experienced customer service this terrible from any restaurant. Spoke to a "manager" around 7pm on Wednesday, June 3. If the restaurant owner is seeing this, please check who (male) was on staff that day as he refused to tell me his name. Ordered online, and when I got the food I immediately noticed there were 2-3 additional boxes, and one of them contained meat. I'm vegetarian and the idea of meat mixed into my food freaks me out - but practically speaking, its nearly impossible to tell apart chicken tikka masala from paneer tikka masala unless I open the dish and play around with the food. Turns out when I called... the restaurant advised me to do exactly that. First thing he said was "so... you got your order then?". No apology at all, and frankly sounded annoyed that I was taking up his time with the call. When I asked for a manager, he was very hesitant, paused, and then said he was the manager. I asked his name... and he hung up on me. I called the food delivery service (caviar) and had them refund my order - they were extremely apologetic and polite. I asked Caviar to connect me with a manager at the location. If I was the manager/owner, I would like to know that my employees are being assholes to customers. read more

I went to this restaurant on a Friday night and it was definitely busy, but we were seated right away. It is very spacious and you could smell the spices from the entrance. We got the spinach naan and it was brought out fresh from the oven. It was delicious, very hard to stop eating it and save room for my meal. I ordered the Tandoori Chicken tikka. The chicken was amazing, I also liked have vegetables served with it as well. There was plenty of rice. My boyfriend ordered the Gyros plate and he enjoyed that dish as well. Felt like we were on the clock, like we had 1/2 hour, tops, before we had to vacate the table, and no one was going to let us forget it! My favorite Indian food. YUM!! They have free parking. Be careful of parking in the lot next to them where the Walgreen is because that is not their parking lot. I have gotten a ticket there myself when I didn't know I wasn't allowed to park there. They have parking across the street both in the fenced parking lot diagonal from them and on the end of the Safeway parking lot. My favorite is the Butter Marsala with Vegi's and Paneer. I'm not a vegetarian but for some reason that tastes so good. Whoever I am with has to order a dish with meat so that we can share. ;) My friend Veronica and I like to go there to enjoy their Chai too!~ A good thing about that is that they never stop refilling it until you tell them to stop. They are amazing at filling your water glass too. The BONUS PART: for some reason they always offer us desserts or an appetizer for free. This is my favorite restaurant of all time, it definitely holds a special spot for me since they feed me and everyone I bring so well. The owners are amazingly friendly and I enjoy talking to them every time I come. My cousin came to visit after spending several months abroad and brought a fellow traveler from England. I brought them to Cedars and the owner made sure to show us all exceptional hospitality. My roommate has also gotten addicted to Cedars and swears by the mango curry. I am a creature of habit...I do not stray from the saag panner. To say that I am a saag paneer connoisseur would be an understatement. I eat it every opportunity I get. Creamy delicious spinach and cheese! Yes! With that being said....to say that Cedar's has the best saag paneer I have ever tasted is quite the compliment. Its so incredibly delish. I think they changed their veggie pakora recipe around recently...they seems to be more doughy than usual...still good...just not as good. I've been to Cedars many times over my years at UW, and it's been one of my Indian food staples due to its convenience, value, and great food. Their naans are fresh, hot, and delicious (especially the paneer naan, which I love), their curries really hit the spot, and their mango lassi is really good. I'm a sucker for butter chicken and paneer tikka masala, but having tried other items on their menu, I know they're not a one hit wonder. So far, rave review. But the reason Cedars only gets three stars from me is because their service has really gone downhill. I've never felt the need to even write a review for Cedars because everyone in the area knows the food is great and there was nothing to complain about with the service. The last few times I've been there, though, I've noticed a definite change for the worse. We've been seated and then ignored for at least 15 minutes. They've brought our curry out and then didn't bring the rice until 10 minutes later after we reminded someone. And we've sat at the table with empty plates for 20 minutes and had to ask for our check twice while tables who got there after we started eating got their checks before us. We weren't even asking for anything extra...just our food and our check in a timely manner. You'd think they'd want to turn over tables quickly so they could seat new people, but it was like they'd flat out forgotten we were there. With my last few visits in mind, I think I'll make the longer journey from now on and go to Taste of India, which has equally good food and awesome service every time. read more

I've been on an insane Indian food kick lately. I've tried almost every restaurant in the area except this one and I've heard so much about it! I decided to get dinner to-go, so my review is about that only. I called in around 5:30 pm and placed my order, and they said it would be only 15-20 minutes. I thought that was pretty quick! So I hopped in my car and headed there. Sure enough, my food was ready upon my arrival. I paid and left, then came home and enjoyed the food. It was absolutely delicious. I ordered the mango chicken curry with palak paneer. Firstly, the portions were much bigger than other restaurants. I was wary of their price being a dollar or two more than other restaurants but now I understand why! My mango chicken had tons of chicken, not just a few chunks. My palak paneer was totally full of paneer. The mango chicken was very sweet -almost too sweet- but it was offset by the savory palak paneer. Their palak paneer isn't too creamy and rich, but has an almost bright and spicy flavor. Very tasty and a good match with the creamier mango curry. They also gave me a massive portion of rice. There's no way 3-4 people could finish the rice I received for those 2 dishes alone. Although Cedars is slightly pricier than other restaurants, their food and service more than make up for it. I love Cedars!! One of the best Indian food I've had in Seattle with pretty good portions that are affordable. Cedars is located in this structure that looks like a house, and it probably used to be a residence! Well, whether or not it was, it's now an awesome restaurant with a very nice "home-y" feel to it. Hahahaha...Puns. Anyways, my roommate and I pretty much come here it's our birthday to have dinner with all our friends. They're friendly and great with large groups! I particularly love their naan cause it's shareable and bigger than my head! I usually just stick with the butter chicken when I'm here, it's kind of my go-to dish at Indian restaurants. All their curry's are delicious and the meat is nice and tender. They all come with some special Mediterranean rice as well! Many folks I come here with say it's spicier than what they anticipated. So caution to that! To non-spicy folks, just tell them no spicey (that's what I usually do). Parking can be found across the street at Safeway, but there isn't many of them. Years ago my boyfriend at the time introduced me to indian cooking by making me homecooked meals he had learned from online instructions. My favorite dish was Chana Masala. It was really delicious. I had been so excited to try Indian restaurants after that so i ventured out to a few and was horribly disappointed because nothing lived up to his cooking. What i had had lacked flavour and freshness. After two years of searching for fresh, flavourful indian cooking i gave up- Tonight my friends and i decided we wanted to go for indian food. I was skeptical, but excited because i still had hope that there was a such restaurant out there that had Indian food like i had first been introduced to. There were five of us and as a table we ordered Mango Curry Chana Masala with Paneer Mint Salad Garlic Naan Roti and one other dish that i cannot remember. First we started off with the breads, which were great (they usually are). The magic happened with the main courses. As soon as the Chana Masala arrived i jumped at the dish. After the first bite a rush of excitement ran through me. I FINALLY found a restaurant that had Chana Masala cooked as well as my boyfriends (and he isn't Indian!). As i moved onto the Mango Curry i just about lost it. The flavours were spectacular and danced around in my mouth. I became overwhelmed with excitement for having finally found a great place. I then mixed the Mint salad into my food and it tasted wonderfully fresh and full of flavour. I was so impressed that i went up to the owner and expressed how grateful i was for the amazing food we had just eaten and that i would be rating them on Yelp, and here i am.. I hate to admit this on such a public forum... especially one packed with foodies and Seattleites... but I have only recently discovered Indian food. I mean, I knew it existed I just never bothered to try it until earlier this year when we very randomly ended up going to an Indian restaurant in (of all places) Prague. So I might be late - but it did happen - and with a vengeance! I love love love everything about Indian cuisine! And Cedar's certainly kept my passion alive! The dishes were incredibly tasty, the service is prompt (though very basic) and the prices are more than fair! I am excited to go back and order more off the menu... though I think I might stick with the basic or garlic naan from now on (though the spinach was excellent it didn't quite fix my need for the naan flavor and function). read more

The food here is really good. The butter chicken is probably the best I've had, anywhere in any state or city. The reason I'm hitting this place with a low star rating is because the value is terrible. The prices are somewhat high (13-16 bucks for a curry dish) but the portions are super skimpy. They'll serve you a giant plate of rice and a tiny gravy boat of curry. You could get three times the food for half the price at a lunch buffet within walking distance (say, Jewel of India.) The food there is of course not as fancy as here but it's far better than 1/4 as good as here, and they're not cheapskates with their customers. Also the naan and some of the vegetarian dishes here are actually worse than cheaper places like Jewel. Good for a date but not a good bang for your dollar. read more

Cedars is my favorite Indian food in Seattle. Their chicken tikka masala is heavenly, and they have the best chai in the entire world (with free refills!). However, on weekends there is always a wait, and a good rule of thumb is to triple the time they tell you ("15-20 minutes" seems to mean 45), and the service is not always the friendliest, which is why the only 4 stars. read more
