But as soon as you drive in becareful it is one way in the same way out. A lot of young kids come here to play in the Molalla River. It is a one-way once you come in. The bathrooms are within walking distance, but driving distance (again one way) is another way to go. The bathrooms were clean and 2 available. There are picnic areas and a good little walk/hike around the park. We met my nieces up at the lake to soak up some sun and spend some time together. Great place for teaching, skipping rocks, or catching and releasing tadpoles! My sons first experience, and he got really good. I've been informed that this place gets super packed when school is put for summer, and there are a handful of kids around. I also saw them riding boogie boards and a kayak. There was a family who came down to fish but didn't seem like they caught anything. The water is super cold until your body gets used to it. Definitely recommend flip-flops. Rocks are a bit rough in the feet!

The only thing to consider is that there is bird/duck poop (it's a lake) on the ground so plan accordingly. The food options are okay and my kids love that there are slushies. There are several areas to swim in per the level/age of the swimmer. We appreciate that there are lifeguards there as well. If the kids need something to do outside of playing in the lake there is basketball, shuffle board, ping pong, and a play structure.

The beach area is covered with lots of trees from large trees, there is plenty of room to picnic (grills available), a snack bar, restrooms, playground and lake access. This beach is closed to everyone except those that live within the boundaries of a Lake Grove School District. Fortunately I have friends who live on the canal and I'm invited out often for boat rides and to anchor and swim in the swimming hole by this beach. Water is surprisingly warmer than I ever predict, but still a cool and refreshing 77 which feels awesome on a hot summer day. This summer, 2020, we enjoyed many pop-up concerts where the band performed on a barge. Missing all the concert and movies in the park, this was a welcomed way to enjoy summer while being socially distanced. My favorite day is July 4th when the town of Lake O lights fireworks over the lake. This is open to anyone, but obviously it's super crowded so if you plan on watching from the beach, get there super early! We watch from the boat, anchoring and tying up with other boats, and then enjoy the magnificent display of fireworks and their reflection on the water while sipping wine, enjoying snacks and great conversation. It's one of my favorite nights of the year! Sadly, the fireworks were cancelled in 2020, along with most everything, but I still spent several heavenly days and evenings on the lake.

Here's what I took away from my trip with David as an experienced salmon fisherman (both personally and with guides) and father. 1) Of all the guides I've fished with, maybe only 2 would be someone I would take my kids fishing with. Obviously, when taking your kids someone with solid character is required. David is one of those. He's safe, thoughtful, friendly, patient and tactful. If you've been with almost any guide before, you know why these would be important when considering whether to take your kids on a trip. This guy understands "the assignment" and would be an excellent choice when booking a trip for your family. You wont have to worry about foul language, getting frustrated with clients(kids), "suspect" conversations, lack of attentiveness (sitting on the phone all day)...this guy is not the same as the guides you've been with before. 2) I'm an an experienced fisherman and gained MASSIVE knowledge in just a single morning with this guy. I've been salmon fishing for 30 yrs, but took a 10 yr "break" fishing salmon in Oregon (moved to AK). I decided to get back into it, bought a new boat, all the necessary gear and THEN went on an informational trip with David with the intent of helping set up my fishing boat effectively. Do yourself a favor, save yourself the time and money. Just book a trip with this guy FIRST, then go buy all the stuff. The cost of the trip is nothing compared to the time and money you'll save in your boat set up. This guy is detailed and organized. We drove to the site, the rode in a van to where we were going to launch the rafts. I recommend a bathing suit, sunglasses sunscreen, and water bottle and water shoes. They provided all of the equipment like life jackets helmets, and paddles, and there is even a Photographer who took great photos you could purchase for $40. We brought snacks and a change of clothes and a towel for when we returned. It was about 2 1/2 hours in the boat. Some parts were calm and beautiful, and the kids got out to swim and some were really fun rapids! Calvin was our guide and he was just fantastic. We rented…read moreBrandon's Monark 205 Sun Lounger deck boat (see photos) and it runs great with a 130 hp outboard. With three passengers, we got a max speed of 30 kts and cruised very comfortably on plane at 22 kts. This is not a new boat and is missing its windshield, but it has a bimini shade and plenty of seating. The seat conditions and such are expected of an older boat, but we are here for the Oregon water experience, not two-tone leatherette. There is no online booking, so text PDX Watersports and the response is fast. Coordinating times and getting a price quote was super easy too. If you are used to renting from overpriced corprate operators, think of this as the opposite-- the hometown small business owner. Chinook Landing boat ramp has plenty of parking and is out of the Portland traffic/busy areas. If you are renting on the 4th of July or some other peak day, expect peak conditions at launch and on the river. We had a quiet, summer Friday on the water instead. Deposit was returned within 60 minutes of getting back to the dock (and inspecting the boat and prop of course!). I would definitely recommend PDX Water Sports if you are an experienced boater looking for a great time on the Columbia or Williamette. I sense a lot of the negative reviewers are people who don't know much about boating, planing speeds, weight distribution, or safe operation of a vessel. Looking forward to doing this again the next time we visit Portland!
