I honestly couldn't believe how amazing Dr. Gressel was with both of my kids. The appointments went so fast, and the kids barely felt a thing. Overall,…read moreit felt like they were quite forceful about trying to maximize the revenue from services. 1) When I called to make an appointment as a new patient, I explained that I had just had xrays done by my prior dentist (we moved here from out of town, so I needed a new dentist). The receptionist said "we really like to do our own." I had the xrays (less than one year old) sent over via email, because I didn't want to get a second set only ten months after getting them done. 2) I walked into the office after parking on the street (I didn't realize they have a parking lot). I was asked "did you walk here?" After the points I'll mention below, I get the impression they look for what kind of car people drive to see if they have money or not. 3) Hygienist says "we're doing Xrays," I say, "no, not this time." She seems fairly shocked and upset by this and says "I'll have to ask the doctor and see what he says." No - that's not how it works. I'm the patient and if I say I'm not getting xrays because I have a set that's 10 months old, that's my decision to make. 4) Dr Jeff Osborn comes in and is very apologetic about the xray situation. I appreciate that he's nice about it - but I didn't like that there was friction in the first place. Strong-arming patients to get xrays.. feels like they are trying to add another service to bill insurance for. 5) I was asked twice "are you happy with your smile?" (it felt like they were looking for upsell opportunities). Not out of line per se - but, combined with everything else, I got the strong impression they are less about teeth cleanings and regular dental care, and are very interested in premium services / upsell opportunities. 6) During the cleaning the hygienist says "we'll need to do the cleaning in two appointments since there's a lot to do -- we'll get the top today." Yes, I drink coffee, and it had been 10 months since my last cleaning (because we moved, and getting an appointment here was only available 3 months out). But in my 4 decades of getting teeth cleaned I've never been told "we'll do half today, and half later." I said "that's weird, I've never heard that before." The hygienist ended up doing the entire cleaning (both top and bottom) and not mentioning it again. But I was again left with the impression they were trying to milk me or my insurance for additional revenue. 7) I was asked about teeth whitening and orthodontics. Again - not out of line on its own, but another instance where maximizing the revenue from the patient seems to be top-of-mind. It felt like they have a "revenue checklist" and they make sure to check every item with every patient. Overall, the feeling I was left with was that they're a lot more focused on upselling and premium services than I'm used to or happy with. Asking if I walked there... that was just weird. If you use them as your dentist, and drive up in a BMW or Mercedes, I have the strange feeling you'll be treated like a significant revenue opportunity. The staff was nice, once we got past their initial extremely strong position that I get new xrays (which, I suspect they may have dropped it because my insurance company only covers yearly xrays and therefore new ones wouldn't be covered anyway). I wonder if the corporate ownership structure puts really strong emphasis on maximizing revenue. They were all very nice and I wish them the best. But I didn't like the feeling that I was a revenue opportunity more than a patient.

Those of you at my age who call a doctor get the usual lead-in "if this is an emergency, call 911..." followed by nothing helpful to sooth my pain. I called the number and the DOCTOR ANSWERED!! This is Christmas Eve day and a Sunday!!! Walked me thru pain relief, the called Rite Aid and prescribed what I needed. All is well and I will report back to him after Christmas. They had my social security number still. So just be forewarned that even if you go in for a consultation they will hold your private information to years to come. Also, during my treatment I received an email that their system had been hacked and my information had been stolen. So be aware. I have only met with the orthodontist once--at my initial consultation. I did not see him at the time I received my aligners or during my mid-treatment appointment, and all of my follow-up visits have only been with dental assistants. One of the main issues I had with my teeth I brought up during my initial consultation to the ortho, I even brought it up again to the dental assistant during my half way point when she showed me what the final results would look like and I told her I don't think my problem will be fixed. I have finished my treatment and have been emailing their office to try and get in and meet with someone about my teeth because I would like to have my issues addressed not with another dental assistant who is going to ignore me but with an orthodontist to review my progress, discuss my concerns in detail, and ensure that my results are what I asked for. Over a week later I have still not heard anything. Not to mention I already paid for my retainers that I still have not received because they haven't contacted me to come finish up the last of my treatment

Dr. Kang is an excellent dentist. Dr. Kang has a soft yet professional touch when providing services and I can relax under her care. I recently had a crown service and Dr. Kang and dental assistant Sadaf worked collaboratively to deliver excellent results. Sadaf was gentle and conveyed an appropriate interest in my welfare which she delivered in a very professional manner. Genuine interest puts me at ease when I'm not treated like a number. Both confirmed the quality of their work before finalizing the crown service. I don't know anyone who gets excited about going to the dentist. But when I go to Tacoma Smiles I receive high quality service and also a breakdown of pre--service costs.
