They have a great staff who are dedicated to all of the wonderful animals looking for homes. They have tons of great volunteer opportunities too from dog walking & cat care to fostering and mobile adoptions. So even if you aren't able to bring a pet into your home right now, there are plenty of ways you can help out this great organization and make an impact on the life of a homeless pet!

Locals assured us she had been displaced and unfed for several weeks. We housed Augusta for four months and loved her very much, but her senile condition/medical complications became too difficult for us to maintain (namely her thyroid deficiency). So, we discussed it with our vet and agreed the shelter was our best alternative. From the get-go, we were received both unprofessionally and insensitively at ICAC, without so much as a greeting. The woman I assume is in charge glared us up and down and asked where the cat came from. She couldn't have looked more disinterested in what we were saying. She then informed us they were unable to take strays found outside of IC. We asked where we should go instead. 15 minutes later, she referred us to a shelter in Cedar Rapids. I explained that Gus had been living with us in IC for four months under local veterinary care and asked that she reconsider Gus's residency. At that time, she began interrogating us about how we acquired the cat, taking a tone as if to imply we were neither "legal" nor competent guardians for Gus. After tiptoeing in circles around reasons to get rid of us, she finally sighed out something along the lines of, "I guess you could relinquish her to us..." We ccepted (so sorry to inconvenience you, lady). She then drilled us over why we didn't just do it at the vet (I'd already told this woman at least twice we'd never done this before). While I was signing the waiver, she was checking Gus's teeth, at which time Gus started growling and the woman took her to another room. She returned almost immediately without Gus and at no point offered us to say our goodbyes. She just sent us on our way. Nevermind what was lacking here in basic service, how the fuck does an animal shelter lack less than basic sympathy?

As I walked up to the front door I noticed that weekly/monthly specials were posted. After walking in I was immediately greeted by a very friendly and knowledgeable employee who helped me find exactly what I was looking for -- I said rawhides when what I really meant was Bully Sticks. :) I spent around $45 on a nice assortment of dog treats (they have a very large variety including a multitude of small training type treats), a bully stick ring, and Tibetan dog chew. Who knew?! I believe the front half of the store is dedicated to dog items, middle of the store for cats, and then at the very back of the store in kind of a separate room is the food. Had I not just bought my dog's food, I would have looked to see if they carry his brand. I did notice they they carry a large selection of FROMM foods, which I've always been a fan of. They had a cute table of gourmet dog treats that you could use to create your own mixed assortment. Might try this next time. If you need a funny greeting card, look no further. They carry the Avanti brand, which is my all-time favorite. They offer some harder to find subject matters like pet-loss, pet-sitting, etc. Prices are more than fair. Everything I bought could be found online, but at more expensive prices. Excellent customer service. Conveniently located in a strip mall with UPS and my favorite Chinese restaurant in IC. Plenty of parking.
