We started our vacation in Maine the first week in august in all the usual places: Ogunquit, Kennebunkport, Portland, etc. Every place we went was beautiful (I can't wait to return in the off-season), but so full of tourists, so hard to find a decent hotel that we decided to get as far away from the crowds as possible. I emailed a few places I found on-line, looking for a cabin the woods and was lucky enough to find a vacancy, way up in the northwest, in Jackman.
After a long drive through the wilderness, we arrived in Jackman at Cedar Ridge Outfitters, to a cabin that was cozy, so clean you could really call it "spotless", and completely removed from everything we were trying to get away from.
The owners, Hal and Deb, run a very tight ship up there in the wilderness, but their attention to detail is so complete that you don't even notice it. Hal told us about several great hiking trails, waterfalls where we could spend the day sunning and swimming that don't appear in the guidebooks, and the best places to eat in this remote region.
A vacation in the wilderness of Maine is not for everyone, but if you are looking for a get-away that will truly make you forget the stress of city-life, give them a call. Their rates are reasonable, and they provided us with an unforgettable experience in the mountains of Maine. In the wild, we saw moose, a bald eagle, and beavers in building a beaver dam. Everyone we met in this town was friendly and happy to share with us their very special and spectacular environment.
I arrived back in manhattan feeling obligated to share with others the amazing and unforgettable experience we had up there in the mountains. read more
