There…read morewas 7 of us, most came up in my fathers 35' RV, we chose the wilderness campsite so we could rage at all hours and not be disturbed by people looking for peace and quiet, great decision! The Wilderness site is about a qtr mile from the main campground and Lodge, which was fine because we would all pile into my buddys pickup and go back and forth. The site was basically a huge field with multiple sites laid right next to the Kennebec River so it was BEAUTIFUL! Def. bring mosquito and bug deterrent (obviously) Not once did any staff member come to check on us which we loved (nothings worse than feeling monitored) RV site had electric hookups which was great for my father so he could relax away from us party animals. The lodge is fantastic, corn hole tournaments, awesome bar with GREAT craft beer! They brew their own beer at the lodge downstairs, it is very delicious. We dined at the lodge our first night after 7+ hours of driving we didn't feel like cooking. Food was A+!!!!! The rafting was very cool, we were a rowdy group to say the least, the guide was very chill and laid back as we wrestled inside the raft trying to throw each other out of the raft even in the middle of rapids (which one of my groomsmen succeeded in doing so with me, it was a rush!) Hitting each other with our paddles, the guide couldn't have been better. Older guides would have screamed at us several times, def. made the experience very memorable letting us bicker amongst ourselves and have fun! It's a total hipster ran place which makes it totally chill, we are by no means hipsters but being around hipsters is never a bad time. Everyone who worked there was cool and relaxed. Not a single complaint! Shower house was clean and water was hot. Def bring gear and supplies, if you run out you're screwed, its about 45 minutes to the closest market of any kind. You're cell phone WILL NOT WORK here!!!!! The wifi in the Lodge is REALLY strong so you can make calls in the lodge once connected, don't expect to be on your Facebook if you're camping, you will be disappointed. Awesome campground! We are doing the Penobscot next year and hopefuly we find a campground as solid as this for that trip (Northern's campground at Penobscot doesn't have electric RV hookups so we can't stay there unfortunately but will use them for the rafting for sure!) We rented the King Pine log cabin for a birthday party. It sleeps 14+! I do have pictures that I will share but the beds aren't made because we were leaving & housekeeping does all of that. We all went to breakfast at their restaurant. Delicious & huge portions. Reasonably priced as well. There's a large hot tub, game room, swimming pool & pool table. Nice cozy couches in this area as well. The staff were some of the nicest people I have ever met. This is an all season place. It is definitely worth the trip!

The first day was the full river trip and the second day was the ultimate on the Kennebec River. Both days were excellent!! It was my and my 16 year old year's first time white water rafting. We absolutely loved it!! We had a big group, 15 people the first day, 19 the second with a large range of ages 6-65 years and mixed of experienced and non experienced. We had the same guides both days-Jackie and Steve. Not only were they great guides but they are beautiful people! Everyone in our group had a wonderful time and we spent all night reminiscing.

We had a party of 12 staying at the Airbnb lodging from Friday to Sunday and participated in the rafting on Saturday. Weather is hard to plan for but in August, it felt like the chances of warm/hot weather would be decent. Unlucky for us, it was quite cloudy and chilly-hovering 60's. Rafting Experience 5/5 - Everybody had a great time!! Strapped on helmet and lifejackets to start the day and then took a bus up the river. Each boat had a 'guide' and our guide (Bryan/"Viking") was awesome. He told us great stories and facts throughout the ride and helped carefully steer us through some intense rapids. The last.. maybe half hour.. of the rafting was fairly quiet and not intense at all. This would've been fine if it was hot and sunny but the weather was super cloudy, chilly, and windy. Not ideal when you're drenched. Airbnb Lodging 3/5 - Plenty of clean beds that could fit a large party. They also had a large dining room table and an open kitchen. We were not able to get Wi-Fi unfortunately and the tv didn't connect to anything. Not a fan of the carpet flooring in one of the two bathrooms. Food 5/5 - They served lunch right after the rafting experience and the food was great!! We had the option of beef, chicken, and vegetarian. Came with rice pilaf, coleslaw, bread roll, and a slice of cake. Everything was yummy, some folks were able to get seconds as any leftovers were going to be tossed. Service 5/5 - Staff were all super friendly and happy to help. Knowing we're not from the area, they tried to offer us solutions to any problems we ran into. Great group of folks to work with. Location.. 1/5 - We had a huge group (3 cars) going up from Boston after work on a Friday (about 4.5-5hr drive) so we all got to the area very late at night. The drive wasn't that bad but finding the Airbnb Lodging was very difficult. Since it was after work hours, late at night, nobody picked up when we tried calling for assistance. There are just not enough guidance around the area to show customers where to park or how to find their lodging. We had to circle the site a few times before we realized where the building was. On our second night, we encountered a couple that were lost and had trouble looking for their lodging area.

I had my doubts as how to keep 5 boys happy, but then I stumbled upon Crab Apple Whitewater Rafting! Our family had only been rafting once in Northern California so we were inexperienced to say the least. Plus, a few of us jump out of ride lines at amusement parks soooo... Our paintball guide was Alex and he was perfect for my group of competitive one-uppers. He was patient, kind, and had a funny, commanding personality. My teenage sons needed a big, strong guy to lead them. It was so fun! even for a 46-year old mom. There were two locations to play on and they also had cold water for us and some bug spray to top off with. We enjoyed the ride out there with Chuck, the patriarch/owner. Restaurant food was great! No complaints from the kids-- burgers, pizza, nuggets, salad and specials. Next day was rafting. the head guide exuded confidence and therefore calmed us all. He had about 30 years experience. I felt very safe. Our guide was Alex again. He was fantastic! Calming the fears of my 11-year old and talking us through the class IVs. He also let each boy try their hand at steering, teaching them with encouragement. No egos here at Crab Apple. Just humble good people. After we had a fun and delicious bbq prepared by the guides. Just a real good vibe! I also want to mention Dawn, who packed an enormous to-go bag with breakfast items when she learned we were leaving at 5am to catch a plane in Boston. Talk about going above and beyond! I highly recommend Crab Apple for individuals and families alike. Five Stars to Chuck and his classy, hardworking family.

So you hike Katahdin (see my Katahdin / BSP review). Get all sweaty and nasty. Get beat up by the mountain. You could camp out at roaring brook (many people do this)... OR, you could drive 40 minutes to the Big Moose Inn. Check in, some very nice ladies / staff / help... You feel at home right away. It's a rustic, Maine type place... Moose and bear heads hanging from the wall. Comfortable couches and furniture in the lobby. You can sit outside on a warm summer night. Then you take a well deserved (hot) shower. You won't be able to do this at Roaring Brook. Put on some clean clothes; go down to the bar, order a Baxter IPA (tall / large pour). It will taste sooooo good. And all the food at this place was awesome! They have a bar menu and restaurant menu. Everything is good. Quesadilla, burgers, salmon, tri-tip... EveryTHANG. You belly up, get a nice meal in you. Go back lay down in comfortable bed. Watch a little TV. I was lights out by 9-pm... Slept soundly - like a rock! Next moanin' they have complimentary breakfast with hot breakfast sandwich and typical contintental breakfast stuff... Then drive the Golden Road back. Helluva trip.

Let's back up though, last year was our first experience, we had the Italian sausages and poutine. I'll always get the poutine if it's on the menu! Both were delish. This past weekend we stopped in again and saw that they expanded their menu. The smash burgers were AMAZING. Real, thick bacon, hot off the grill. It might be top 5 burgers I've ever had. MAYBE top 2! Staff is so friendly, even the guests at the RV park are friendly and helpful. They have a pool at the front of the park, people are always in that relaxing. The RV park is right off of a main road, that is part of the OHRV trail system. It's a perfect stop while you are out riding. Prices are fair, they accept credit cards and cash, they have some yard games set up (jenga, cornhole) and some bathrooms for you to use during your stop. Can't recommend this place enough!
