Bigelow Preserve is an absolutely gorgeous state-owned nature preserve in Western Maine…read more Established in 1976, this protected land is open to the public for hiking, camping, boating, fishing, fall foliage, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and so much more! At over 36,000 acres... you're sure to find something of interest. The flora and fauna are just breath-taking and it is absolutely worth a visit! I visited this vast parcel of land with the intent of climbing four out of the seven peaks of the Bigelow Mountain Range that are contained within the preserve. As some of the tallest mountains in all of Maine, I was excited for the challenge. The mountains are named after Major Timothy Bigelow who summitted the peaks in the late 1700s. There are many trails, including the famous Appalachian Trail, that snake through this forested playground. The Maine Appalachian Trail Club maintains these tracks and provides caretakers at the backcountry camping sites. From the mountains there are impressive views of Flagstaff Lake and the mountain range itself. Open all year round. One of the most scenic hikes I've completed in a while! There…read morewas 7 of us, most came up in my fathers 35' RV, we chose the wilderness campsite so we could rage at all hours and not be disturbed by people looking for peace and quiet, great decision! The Wilderness site is about a qtr mile from the main campground and Lodge, which was fine because we would all pile into my buddys pickup and go back and forth. The site was basically a huge field with multiple sites laid right next to the Kennebec River so it was BEAUTIFUL! Def. bring mosquito and bug deterrent (obviously) Not once did any staff member come to check on us which we loved (nothings worse than feeling monitored) RV site had electric hookups which was great for my father so he could relax away from us party animals. The lodge is fantastic, corn hole tournaments, awesome bar with GREAT craft beer! They brew their own beer at the lodge downstairs, it is very delicious. We dined at the lodge our first night after 7+ hours of driving we didn't feel like cooking. Food was A+!!!!! The rafting was very cool, we were a rowdy group to say the least, the guide was very chill and laid back as we wrestled inside the raft trying to throw each other out of the raft even in the middle of rapids (which one of my groomsmen succeeded in doing so with me, it was a rush!) Hitting each other with our paddles, the guide couldn't have been better. Older guides would have screamed at us several times, def. made the experience very memorable letting us bicker amongst ourselves and have fun! It's a total hipster ran place which makes it totally chill, we are by no means hipsters but being around hipsters is never a bad time. Everyone who worked there was cool and relaxed. Not a single complaint! Shower house was clean and water was hot. Def bring gear and supplies, if you run out you're screwed, its about 45 minutes to the closest market of any kind. You're cell phone WILL NOT WORK here!!!!! The wifi in the Lodge is REALLY strong so you can make calls in the lodge once connected, don't expect to be on your Facebook if you're camping, you will be disappointed. Awesome campground! We are doing the Penobscot next year and hopefuly we find a campground as solid as this for that trip (Northern's campground at Penobscot doesn't have electric RV hookups so we can't stay there unfortunately but will use them for the rafting for sure!) We have done it with younger kids, teenagers and just adults. We have stayed just one night and a few nights, both full service and self service. The Hut staff have always been accommodating, kind and provide wonderful , home- cooked meals . Nordic gear can be rented at the Sugarloaf Outdoor center close by. Make sure to consult the office & staff on what trails are best for novice & advanced. The trail to Stratton Brook can be steep and tricky for some, exciting and very do-able for others . Flagstaff is flat & easy , short. Snowshoes are also a fun way to access the huts. I would HIGHLY recommend Maine , Huts & Trails to anyone even curious about going. We had a party of 12 staying at the Airbnb lodging from Friday to Sunday and participated in the rafting on Saturday. Weather is hard to plan for but in August, it felt like the chances of warm/hot weather would be decent. Unlucky for us, it was quite cloudy and chilly-hovering 60's. Rafting Experience 5/5 - Everybody had a great time!! Strapped on helmet and lifejackets to start the day and then took a bus up the river. Each boat had a 'guide' and our guide (Bryan/"Viking") was awesome. He told us great stories and facts throughout the ride and helped carefully steer us through some intense rapids. The last.. maybe half hour.. of the rafting was fairly quiet and not intense at all. This would've been fine if it was hot and sunny but the weather was super cloudy, chilly, and windy. Not ideal when you're drenched. Airbnb Lodging 3/5 - Plenty of clean beds that could fit a large party. They also had a large dining room table and an open kitchen. We were not able to get Wi-Fi unfortunately and the tv didn't connect to anything. Not a fan of the carpet flooring in one of the two bathrooms. Food 5/5 - They served lunch right after the rafting experience and the food was great!! We had the option of beef, chicken, and vegetarian. Came with rice pilaf, coleslaw, bread roll, and a slice of cake. Everything was yummy, some folks were able to get seconds as any leftovers were going to be tossed. Service 5/5 - Staff were all super friendly and happy to help. Knowing we're not from the area, they tried to offer us solutions to any problems we ran into. Great group of folks to work with. Location.. 1/5 - We had a huge group (3 cars) going up from Boston after work on a Friday (about 4.5-5hr drive) so we all got to the area very late at night. The drive wasn't that bad but finding the Airbnb Lodging was very difficult. Since it was after work hours, late at night, nobody picked up when we tried calling for assistance. There are just not enough guidance around the area to show customers where to park or how to find their lodging. We had to circle the site a few times before we realized where the building was. On our second night, we encountered a couple that were lost and had trouble looking for their lodging area.
