Driving to Duluth in February wasn't the smartest decision I've ever made, but there was some dog…read moresledding to be done. My grandparents were Finnish, lived in Hibbing and I remember them talking about having a sauna on the farm. When we arrived in Duluth in the morning I thought "Hey, I bet they have public saunas here." We asked the server at our restaurant and she hemmed and hawed and said, "no, not really. Maybe at a gym or YMCA." I told her I found this place on yelp and she said, "uh, no, I wouldn't recommend it." Indicating with her expression and a few words that in her opinion it was sketchy. After having fun dog sledding and freezing our butts, noses, fingers off outside, we decided to drive by and see what the place was like and make a decision from there. We checked it out and it seemed ok and clean enough and we decided to enjoy a traditional, public sauna. What this place is not: a boutique spa where everything is tiled, and white except for the tropical green plants, and the robes and towels are thick and fluffy. What this place is: a traditional sauna that hasn't seen an update since the 60s and the towels match the decor. (side note: we went in February 2018 and it seems from their website they have had some renovations recently.) The towels are small and thin, but clean and get the job done. From their website: "Built in the 1920's at its present location, it was a real necessity for the Swedish & Finnish miners, loggers & railroad men who came into town on weekends. As people settled down in homes with indoor plumbing, public saunas/bath houses began to close down. Duluth Steam Baths itself was slowly deteriorating, while going through various owners until 1969 when purchased by Herb Jensen." For $20 you can rent a room for you, or you and a partner, and get your sauna on and relax for up to two hours. The sauna has a private changing room with a bed for relaxing between sauna sessions (and whatever else you want to do, I guess. ;) ), and a shower and soap in the sauna room so you can rinse off before you leave. Men have the option of going downstairs to the "bull pen" where there are shared steam rooms and showers. It seems there are a lot more pricing/package options for men that want to hang out in the bull pen all day or even all night. We went on a weekday and didn't see much activity and only stayed upstairs and in our private room and sauna. I'm glad we decided to go to the sauna and if I ever find myself in Duluth in the winter again, (actually, it's pretty chilly there in the middle of summer too) I'll try to make time for some relaxin' in the sauna.

Don't believe the rumors you might hear about this place, I simply haven't seen anything so far that would suggest any of them are true. To date I have only used the private rooms on the main floor. I plan to go back again very soon.

I had the best massage, of my life at The Well. I knew nothing about Ashiatsu, other than it…read morelooked like a more painful version of shiatsu, which I was not a fan of. However, after suffering for 17 years with a chronic neck and shoulder issue, all roads led to Duluth, and to the Ashiatsu room at The Well, where I was lucky enough to work with Aine O'Leary, their resident genius. Aine created a safe, incredibly harmonious space from the moment I stepped in the room, allowing me to explain why I was there, and what I was hoping to heal, while being both gracious and generous in hearing me out. Sometimes, when you tell a therapist about your specific issue, all you get is a standard massage. But there was nothing standard about the massage I received, from Aine. There really is no way to describe it, without experiencing it, but the silly metaphor I have is that normal massage is like being kneaded like you're bread, while Ashiatsu (at least as far as Aine practices it) is like being surfed on, like you're a wave. The energy isn't just moved around your body . . . it's gathered by the force and power allowed by the human foot and flushed out of you. Aine targeted the specific area - shoulder and neck - but not by routinely working it. Rather, she would start with a small area on my back, and then use her foot to gather all the pain in my back, and through steady and very deep pressure, push it out of my body. The experience was very musical to me - in the sense that the feeling would start small, and then build and build to this crescendo of feeling as all the deepest pains in your muscles were completely straightened out, loosened, and lengthened, until pain I didn't even know I had, were both addressed and released. Gone from me now, days later, as I write this. The entire experience, from beginning to end, was absolutely fantastic. None of the pain of shiatsu, but all of the benefits. I walked out feeling not only looser, and happier, but lighter, somehow taller. My energy, which had been so tied to negativity, which in turn had been so cramped into my muscles, had now re-tuned into something more at ease with the world around me. I can't put it any other way. Aine healed me, at least for the time being, from something I didn't even know was hurting me. I went home that night, feeling so happy I cried. As if I hadn't felt happy, in so long, and only now, in the absence of this pain that was so deep within me, I was now free to have my old life back. The happy life, I had thought impossible to access. And THAT is what I always want, from any form of healing - to not just feel better for the moment, but to regain the hope that I can feel better from now on. So thank you, Aine. You are a true healer. Thank you for helping me. Can't wait for the next session!

This review is long overdue, but everytime I go to write one I end up making an appointment…read moreinstead! I was in Duluth unexpectedly under very stressful circumstances. My body was beyond knotted up and I had a killer headache as a result. After reading many reviews obsessively, I landed on Muggymoose. I emailed late in the evening asking if I could be treated in the next few days. I couldn't believe it when I received an immediate response from the owner. She reached out to all of the therapists and she found one that could work me in the next morning! This gift from God was Bell. Bell took her time to go through my health history, my needs and what I was hoping to get out of our time together. Usually this gets a little annoying because I can see the clock ticking and knowing that this time was coming out of my allotted time on the table. Not with Bell! She still gave me my full time and even a bit more! The knowledge she has about anatomy and physiology is ridiculous. As well as her knowledge of Eastern massage practices and how to apply them. She is so amazing. She is also a great conversationalist IF that's what you want. The first time she chatted with me as I was sharing my stress and worries. She had great insight on how this stress was affecting my mind and body. The next time I saw her, I was in a much better place and we barely talked. I have had innumerable massages and that is a very rare experience. Either too chatty or awkwardly silent. Bell knows the perfect balance and shows yet again how intune she is with people. The space is amazing and you can feel your mind and body unwinding the moment you walk in. I am so grateful I was led to Muggymoose and especially Bell. Such a blessing and I can't wait to go back North!

Cons: Very high price compared to most lodging options in the area. Bed mattress is very firm. There is a thin layer of pillow top, but it is well broken down. I had a back ache both early mornings, waking up well before I wanted to. The ironing board is one of those mini ones with a dirty old cover. Although there were wine glasses, there was no cork screw in the room. Although there are big candles in the bathroom there is no matches provided to light them. The s'mores kit we were provided had stale marshmallows. One of the bathroom sink bowls had some kind of unsightly chemical damage. In-room TV is small (20") and low quality. Refrigerator froze our milk solid. I'd be fine with the issues of this place, if the price was lower. For the price they are charging, none of these cons should exist.

Overall, I would stay here again. I love Two Harbors and the entire area. It's much better than going to Lake Tahoe bc there's little to no traffic & Lake Superior is the biggest freshwater lake in America.
