I had comm failure on a flight to my home airport Sanford from Okeechobee, needless to say it was a pretty stressful experience. I am based at the FBO right next to CE Avionics so decided to have them take a look. Initially they found that the push to talk switch on the co-pilot side was stuck, which was a pretty easy fix. After replacing the switch however they found it was still sticking for some reason, and due to the bad background noise I was hearing on the radio even before the comm failure I felt they were deeper wiring issues. After discussing it with them I decided to get a new audio panel and have all the wiring redone. They took about a week to get the work done and came in a few hundred dollars over the estimated price. I was due for an oil change so after the work was done I had to taxi to a different part of the airport where my mechanic was based. While taxiing to the southeast ramp I was informed by ground that they could not read me on com 1, but I was able to use com 2 to taxi to my mechanics hangar. And while taxiing there I noticed that my Garmin 430W was not picking up any satellites, which had never happened to me before. I emailed them about the problem later that night and they had someone check it out the next morning. They said it was a "mating problem" with a new rack they had put in, and assured me all was fine. I decided to test everything out the next day, and the GPS was acquiring satellites and both radios were working from the pilot side, however I was unable to contact ground from the co-pilot side, I tried it with two different headsets. There was also a constant clicking noise in the background. I was bit aggravated now, and emailed them again. They tested it the next morning, and claimed everything was working fine, and asked me to come in so they could go through it with me. I told them I would try it myself again, and let them know if there was still problem. Magically this time it worked fine, and background clicking noise was gone. I don't really believe in magic, so you can draw your own conclusions... I will say the next flight I did the radios were very clear and everything worked great, so I am hopeful that my radio problems are behind me. Bottom line they got the work done fairly quickly, and did respond to my issues very quickly as well. Taking off one star for not thoroughly testing their work, especially the second time. Sanford is a busy Class C airport, having clear working radios is very important. Will update if I have any more issues. read more
