When did the prices here go through the roof? I know everyone is raising prices but this is almost criminal! Used to frequent due to their impressive selection but it's hard to look forward to coming here when the prices are this outrageous. Not sure who will be able to afford coming here, or hear themselves think with the loud, abrasive music blasting on all cylinders. I've been going to the CD Trader since I was around 17 (in my mid 40s now). Great vibe to the place. I always seem to stumble onto a couple things I didn't think they'd possibly have. I found several boxes of DVDs & VHS tapes that I no longer want. I'm trying to not throw them away - but to be responsible with where old items go. I was able to sell a few items, but most of the media wasn't too desirable. I didn't walk in with the expectation to sell anything. Thought it was a little odd to drop off the items at the front, then return when the assessment was done. Customer service was friendly. Bought a bunch of cds there yesterday. Nice store with a good selection of things. The Blues section is very small and it could be a lot bigger! - but the overall experience is far better than say the new Amoeba but their prices for used cds are like Amoeba, which is great. I also found what I was kind of looking for; so I was very happy. The staff aren't mask wankers and act like normal human beings rather than camp guards, which in times of the covids is a big plus for any freedom loving and self respecting individual. This review is solely based on the dvd selling experience. I usually sell at Second Spin in Sherman Oaks. CD Trader seems to pay a bit less, but the experience was faster, parking was easier, and it's closer to my house. If I'm in Sherman Oaks, I'll go to Second Spin, otherwise, my time might be worth more than the extra few bucks I might get. Very rude customer service. Walked in and the guy with the long curly hair had zero customer service, greeted him with "good morning would like to trade in some movies" replied with "yeah, in a moment helping someone out" Was waiting patiently by the counter and he said "you can look around" so I brought in the bag of movies I had with me and he says "leave the bag right there by the counter" and I asked "shouldn't you have them there up with you?" (Since the counter was right there in front by the door, someone can easily just take them, unlikely but that was my thinking). This place has got an interesting selection of modern and older stuff. I found a couple things I'd not seen at other places which made me happy. The reason I'm giving them 3 stars instead of 5 is because of their pricing. It all feels so random. They'll charge $13 for a record they could easily get $20 for and then simultaneously be charging $50 for something that you can go find cheaper anywhere else. It feels like whoever prices the vinyl does not understand the proper valuable of what they are selling. I understand some vinyls sell much better than others, but there should not be such a large disparity in prices at a single store. That being said, I will probably be going back to get some of the things that they are underpricing. read more

This intimate store is a great place to purchase records, CD's, DVD's, posters, and some other awesome vintage products. Upon arrival, customers are given the options to buy, trade, and/or sell. The guys at the counter are always very friendly making the experience extra enjoyable. Strolling down the aisles you'll find some real gems. Rock & Roll, Jazz, Folk, Pop, Funk, Blues, Hip-Hop, etc... this place has it all. The music collection is pure gold and has many of my favorites, including some rare finds. Most vinyl's are in excellent condition ranging from used to brand new. Prices are fair and affordable. It's a shame we don't have more authentic stores like this, but CD Trader fills the void. So c'mon people; support your neighborhood store and let's keep these spectacular records alive! CD Trader truly surprised me. I grew up in Encino and have passed by this place literally hundreds of times, but the generic sign and the generic name never called out to me. When I wandered in to kill some time one day after putting my name down at Cici's, I was shocked to find a spacious record store with a large and excellent selection. The prices are fair, and were sweetened by a spring sale that meant either 10 or 20% off every item in the store. I don't know how usual an occurrence this sale was, but it made everything a pretty good deal. The selection is really big, both new and used, and though expansive, it is very well organized. There's also a substantial inventory of records, both new and used, if that's your thing. I haven't tried selling to CD Trader and don't know if I'll ever bother, but the place is great for buying and browsing. Never again will I be discouraged by a long wait for Cici's. read more

If you are looking for a good selection of used CDs at great prices go to CD trader. I found all sorts of stuff that I rarely find at other places for super cheap! The vinyl records selection is pretty good, although they are definitely emphasizing new records at the inflated record prices. It's just how it is. I did find a used record I was looking for in great condition for 10 dollars. The lower bins have a mix of new and used records. Overall good place with good selection. read more

I have never seen a better inventory of boutique blu rays on planet earth. Prices are MSRP but thats respectable, especially if you're a serious collector they have those grails and for the price you are willing to pay let me put it that way. (+) Fairly large selection of cd's, dvd's, blu rays (+) Vinyl with all kinds of interesting and eclectic categories i.e. global music, spoken word, moog, testing presses, white labels, imports, etc. (+) Prices are okay, some seem steep but most were reasonable (-) Customer service or lack thereof (not a big deal but I have to agree with some of the other reviews on this one) (-) Somewhat disorganized inventory, but you can't find that treasure single or diamond LP unless you dig through those crates! I love Amoeba and Rasputin records so I felt spoiled when I was living up in Berkeley and could just walk to Telegraph Ave. This is a much smaller shop but one of the few remaining independent stores still around in the area. It's a good place to burn time if you are waiting for a table at CiCi's Cafe. I also have a lot of used media I've been meaning to part with, so I'll update if I go here to sell my old records, CD's, and DVD's. read more

I love this little record/music store! So far I've visited twice, and I am very happy to see places like this busy nowadays! Located right on Ventura Blvd in Tarzana, it's super convenient to get to. I love the mid century styled building it's located in, and it has a parking lots with ample parking right out front. Firstly, the people working here are really friendly and helpful. They also have great taste in music as well. On each visit I've had to ask them what music they were playing, it's always nice finding new favorites! The selection of records here is good for a smaller record store. You aren't going to be impressed if you're used to the likes of Amoeba, but if you're like me who is used to small mom and pop record stores that litter the rest of the country, you'll feel right at home here. They have a good mix of DVDs, Cassettes, CDs and of course LP's! I've always found something I've been looking for here. They stock both contemporary artists and vintage ones. It's nice being able to get a Tame Impala or Air LP and then go after Bowie or Tull in the same place. As far as prices go they float a little under from what you're expect at "collector" stores but you're still getting quality here! They do have sales every so often too so check their website! Great revolving selection and good prices. They get docked a star for the following: They had a used CD player for sale. I asked the young person at the counter if it was guaranteed to work. They told me that I needed "all th other stuff". As in a receiver and speakers. Didnt ask any of their co-workers for any help. Just left it at that. Okay Gen Z. If youre going to work at a used record and cd store, someone needs to properly train you in the ways of old, before you listened to all your music on your phone. Its your job to know. I'm giving CD Trader a 4 star rating because it's an independent record store that hasn't gone out of business. That's a quite a feat in this day and age. I was able to find some CD bargains, a new Smiths CD for $9, no cut in the spine of the jewel case or hole punch in the back to indicate it was a promo. (I think it was in the used section). This store kind of reminds me of that record store in the movie/book High Fidelity. How come John Cusack and Jack Black aren't here? Heh. There's actually only a mild resemblance to that record shop. It would be nice if they had a section with postcards/posters/stickers of bands. I wouldn't be surprised if they do have this, but I just passed it over when I was at CD Trader. CD trader is a great place if you want to find a low-cost CD or DVD. The selection is pretty good although there is no guarantee to finding exactly what you're looking for, it is all hit and miss.some of the staff can be a little bit aloof, customer service is not necessarily what they are there for it's almost as though they have contempt for the customers. Some may find this a problem, but I guess it really doesn't matter as long as I'm able to buy some inexpensive DVDs. read more

It's sad that I have to consider shopping at an independent record/video store such as this a novelty and privilege, but we're living in 2017 and this is our sad reality. The layout in here reminded me of Wherehouse in some ways, which brought back some of those waxy feelings of nostalgia. I had brought along a massive stack of movies and CDs to trade in, so I plopped those down at the front counter and commenced crate digging. The selection here is good, not great. I did manage to find some sweet vinyl soundtracks and albums, but the cost on them was a bit higher than I wanted to pay. I know, I know... supporting local business costs money but, you know, I also need to have money, too. Most of their Blu-rays were attractively priced but, because I am such a huge nerdy collector nearly every title I would have wanted I already owned. They didn't have much in the way of rare or hard-to-find catalog titles. Finally, I got called up front to claim my credit. The guy had set aside a big chunk of titles they didn't want. I was prepared for a low figure and he offered me something VERY reasonable. When I inquired, "Cash or credit?", he replied with, "Whatever". Geez. At Amoeba they would've raked my money over the coals and given less cash than credit - which most places do - but not here. I walked off with a fat wad of cash and a big grin on my face. I may not have scored anything other than cash, but the great service and experience of shopping in a bygone establishment was enough to guarantee I'll be back again. read more

I really do enjoy coming to this place. It's never crowded inside and the prices are just right for what you're getting the location is easy to find and they have ample parking. I would much rather drive to this place then drive to Hollywood and go to amoeba where they have theirs overpriced. I have to say this is a great store. I originally went earlier this year and poked around and while impressed with the amount of inventory, I didn't really get into it as I should have. My second visit today was amazing. I took the time to look through the bins and found some really fantastic finds at below market pricing. Just amazing finds, I mean that. The Staff was friendly, the patrons were all friendly and enjoying themselves, the only downside was parking in their front lot was tough. A restaurant located in this strip mall sucks up all the parking, but you can go to the back where they have plenty of open spaces. Do yourself a favor, head on down, spend a little time and have fun like you did 20 years ago searching for cool records and great deals. Mediocre selection, although priced justifiably. The customer service on the other hand is deplorable. Not so much as a "hello" the whole time I was there. Not knowing better I would swear I was a ghost. Nevertheless, the place is worth checking out if you're interested in trying to find some old classic. However, should you have the opportunity to visit a 'Book-off' instead, I'd highly suggest taking that opportunity any day. read more

Nice people, good selection and their sales are awesome! 30% off used vinyl...Yes please! Also, frequently albums that are new are marked used because of a minor tear in the plastic. So you really score during the Used sales. They do a stamp card too and it's pretty sweet. I buy records and if I buy, say, a five LP box, they give you 5 stamps. Same for a double LP, 2 stamps. Nice used section too (its mixed in with the new release which is a little annoying but not that uncommon), but their prices are fair and sometimes considerably lower than the competition. Only gripes are parking and the setup which has lots of choice vinyl in bins on the floor so you have to bend/squat/sit to dig through them. Not the best for 6'5" guys with a bad back. But when you're finding "used" (but actually new) Lush Origami box sets for $85 you suck it up! These guys and Freakbeat keep me from having to trek over to Amoeba. read more

To all vinyl buyers. YOU WILL NOT FIND A DEAL HERE. Every single used item is priced within an inch of it's life. We are talking hi end of discogs here with shipping added prices. The best deal you might find is an out of print item that they might happen to still have a new copy at the original new price. Anything used will hurt your wallet. It's very rare I walk out of any record store empty handed but it's happened more than a few times here. The staff are a bunch of rude snobs who can't be bothered to lift a finger. Just your typical record snobs who think they know a lot about records. Sure the inventory is actually impressive but, to me, that makes it all the worse when you see something amazing you've finally found but the pricing makes it either impossible to buy or very difficult. I honestly don't know how these guys stay in business. I think they take advantage of their customer base knowing they are the only record store on that side of the valley. Go to Freakbeat instead, they actually price stuff to move so their inventory changes all the time. Don't fall prey to this overpriced shithole uninviting record store. read more

Totally agree with Benay K. This place used to be pretty good but has gone way downhill. The vinyl section has shrunk considerably and is now mostly pricey reissues. Prices on what regular used stuff there is have gone way up, it's a ripoff. To make matters worse, the people buying used stuff are seriously rude and totally lowball you. I'd rather keep my vinyl or give it to someone who will enjoy it than get 50 cents from these rude clowns for something I know is worth more. Go to Freakbeat instead, this place sucks. read more
