Although Belfast International is not the largest or nicest of airports, I have fond memories of…read moreit. My first time flying was through here and it has stuff I appreciate like a Starbucks and not having to walk through duty free to get to your gate. On Saturday, going through security was slower than usual, but it was rush hour and lots of people were entering the hall at the same time. We were shouted at for putting our suitcases into the trays but we were told to put them into trays at Edinburgh. I guess different airports will have different systems but it was a bit confusing. Once through, you can go to one of the cafes or shops. I didn't really spot that many though. For shopping, it is mainly just travel essentials like Superdrug, Boots and Duty Free, and there are restaurants like Burger King and Starbucks. They have refurbished the toilets which I was glad about because I remember they were pretty gross before. Some gates will require longer walks than others as they are in annex areas as opposed to being integrated with the shops like in Edinburgh. Why the 4 star review? Because of memories, and I have been subjected to the awfulness of Edinburgh Airport, so I'm glad by how BFS is a bit more organised and less stressful.

The airport has undergone too big a shift to money grubbing and trying every penny pinching trick…read morein the book. The biggest and clearly one of the clearly most annoying to most people is the £5 drop-off charge introduced just a few months ago. This has meant that there has been an increase in people trying to get dropped off outside the airport property boundary and walking in. While it's a fact of life that air travel has many silly little charges all around plane ticket itself, this place is becoming ridiculous.

The parts of this airport that I visited were pretty clean, but the bathroom I stopped in could have used a little TLC. Getting my luggage was not a problem whatsoever and I liked that the conveyor belt was pretty long so I didn't have to feel like I was standing too close to anyone. The employees were friendly and many of them were welcoming each person that passed them, with a smile on their faces. The parking lot where I had to go was super small and thankfully I didn't have to drive because the cars were so close to each other, there would have been no way I would have gotten out of there with no scratches lol! Overall, a slightly better than average airport but nothing that I would write home and rave about!

I also arrived to the airport 1 hour and a half early. Normal for me. I got to the terminal and the gate was undisclosed until 20 minutes before departure. I refuse to believe they don't know the gate letter until 20 minutes before take off. My previous review was for arrival... obviously departure is different. They did have a pretty quick security check. It's just I believe if you have to navigate a lot of steps, there should be some assistance offered.

Watch your head, unless you're as short as I am. We were on the CIE Scots Irish tour. We somehow got a table directly next to the band and had a wonderful time, let folks come and sit with us, got Guinness with Blackcurrant (which depending on who you ask is WRONG ... I thought it was fun). We had a BBQ buffet dinner that was good with plenty of food. They let us take home our placemats which are maps of Ireland. Also, there was a gift shop with some lovely items that came home with us, as well.

This pub has been standing since the 17th Century, they know a thing or two about hospitality. Our party of five made ourselves cozy in the sessions corner as the pub keeper offered to light a peat moss fire for our comfort. They sell tee-shirts and tourist patronize this place, on account of it being a very old, beautiful Irish pub, but there were a few locals enjoying a pint when we stopped in. One of the owners is American, and I was surprised to see JFK Memorabilia in the smaller room. They have antique oil lamps, old firearms and assorted things on display for patrons to muse. They proudly serve Bushmills and even their own brand of Crosskeys Whisky, but I got a gin and tonic and enjoyed the Northern Irish craic that was on full supply on this June day.

We started with pints of cider, then ordered dinner. I had the Irish Cream Chicken, two chicken cutlets pounded thin and sauteed, served over mashed potatoes and topped with a Bushmills gravy with green beans. We got a second side, and I decided on the champ, a potato and leek mash with spring onions. Extra sauce served on the side had green beans in it, too. My husband ordered the lamb shank and enjoyed it, as well. It came with mashed potato, but he ordered the side of French fried onions (onion rings, which were a little greasy). After that, I was full, but Mr. S. asked to at least see a dessert menu. It was a tough decision between the pavlova and the hot fudge cake, but we opted to share the cake. A simple two-layer chocolate cake, drenched in a warm chocolate sauce and served with our choice of ice cream or fresh cream. Not overly fancy, but completely delicious.

We arrived around 1.30pm, downstairs was pretty empty so we lifted a few menus and sat down. A girl quickly came to serve us for drinks and let us browse menu. Typically pub grub and lots to choose from. I had the lamb roast and mum had chicken maryland(see pics) Both meals were generous servings, especially for lunch time. I thought the food was very nice and really well priced. The meat is supplied my Hannons butchers. Free off road parking out back. Friendly staff. The dining area upstairs looked very nice(think its just for dinner or busy times)
