And the food was fast, but definitely not fast food. Once inside, the pride the owner takes in her business is as evident as the friendly service that makes you feel like grandma must be the one cooking in the kitchen. This restaurant is truly a diamond in the rough. We chose it based on the current Yelp review of a 4.9, and after our experience I'm truly questioning the sanity of whoever gave her the line score below a 5. Dated building aside, the rest of the ambiance was neat, clean, and at the time of our visit, quiet. However, we arrived very near closing time on a Wednesday, so I imagine it's much more lively at peak hours. My husband and I both ordered the whiting fish plate with turnips and Mac N cheese. Two giant fillets of piping hot fish came our way in no time, perfectly seasoned with the best crunch imaginable, yet not overly greasy. The turnips, likewise, deliciously seasoned along with Mac N cheese of the variety you would expect if grandma was, indeed, in the kitchen. So, if you're ever in Rocky Mount, seeking the best fare the town has to offer, stop by Mama Sarah's. It's worth your while.

I first had Bojangles in the Fredericksburg area and thought it was excellent. I went to ones in Prince George's County, MD as well as Union Station DC, areas closest to where I lived. All the MD & DC closed in late 2023. I remember liking the New Carrollton, MD location often when I had work travel pre-Covid. I went one time in early 2023 on work travel over there, and I was underwhelmed with that location. Although the food was great, they were as slow as molasses and was kind of dirty in there; not the experiences I had in the past. Although they had their issues, I was disappointed when I saw they had closed. So, when in Rome, I wanted to make to Bojangles on SML trip. Fast food is limited in the area. It's Bojangles & Wendy's, which is weak, and I live within 5 miles of a Wendy's, so I wanted to get something I can't get at home. I was very impressed with how friendly, fast, & tasty the food was on both visits here. I also was very impressed how clean it was in this location unlike the former MD locations. They also had American flags up for week of 4th of July, which was nice. This location was better than any of the MD locations I went to, DC, Fredericksburg, & one in North Carolina. Both times I got the chicken tender platter, which is tenders, fries (well seasoned), & biscuit; all delicious with Bo Sauce along with sweet tea, a nice Southern delicacy freshly brewed here. Next time at SML, I'll try to make it back to Bojangles.

They literally come up to your car, take your order, and bring your food back. I loved the old school feel. It took no time for my food to arrive-about 7 minutes. I got a burger, onion rings, and a hotdog all the way. The onion rings were fresh, hot, and had the perfect amount of salt. The burger was well seasoned, had that crisp, grilled taste. The hotdog was good as well-chili was perfect. It was such a nostalgic feel and definitely a must visit for the experience.

The owner was very friendly and had great stories to tell. Being an old shop, it had the stools at the counter and a few booths. I hope to pass through here again. Next time maybe the chili dogs. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

To get there I had to drive on the highway and with the change in time, when I arrived, night had already fallen, and it was dark. With no traffic lights to turn to the small parking lot of the restaurant, I had to wait until cars stopped coming from the other side to be able to turn towards the restaurant. You could say it was an adventure just getting there on a Sunday evening. Once inside, the place was clean, cozy and had a comfortable ambiance, with eclectic dining furniture and decor. I invite you to view my photographs accompanying this review for a better sense of the place and the quality of the food. A young lady who would be my server, greeted me and took me to my table, leaving a copy of the menu with me and taking my drink order. I had a fountain drink. When she came back with my drink I ordered a House Salad with the House dressing to start with, and a Klukin Pig Sandwich with Homemade Chips. The sandwich had ham, chicken, bacon, provolone and Chef dressing on a Ciabatta bread. The salad was a nice size salad, served in a plastic bowl. I enjoyed eating it with the House dressing very much. The sandwich was not too big but good tasting. And the chips were pre-cooked, so they were somewhat dry. I had expected they would be fried at the moment, like in other restaurants I'd had homemade chips before. For dessert I had a Funnel Cake Sundae. It was huge and delicious. The other desserts they had were mostly slices of cakes and pies packed in plastic containers. I could see the locals or tourists of this small town dining here, but I wouldn't make it a trip just to dine there.

Wow, I was impressed with both the inexpensive prices & good quality burger! This was almost on par with In & Out Burger in terms of the taste, another burger place we sadly DON'T have in my home state, Maryland. The menu is a la carte even to the ingredients on the burger, like lettuce was extra. It took some getting used to, but I kind of liked in that I wasn't paying for stuff I might not have cared for much. Staff was cordial and helpful with my couple of questions. My g/f & I split the 12-piece hash puppies and sweet tea. Hush puppies were delicious and not a normal thing I get in MD due to not many places having it. At fast food burgers I've had in MD, typically fries are the standard side item; so I liked having the hush puppies option. Overall, my experience was excellent with the Rocky Mount Cook Out. Unfortunately, the 3 other locations I went to after (one of which I didn't eat at because they didn't have an open dining room, was pouring rain outside, and didn't want to eat in the car like animals) weren't as good, but I'd definitely try to return to the Rocky Mount, VA location.
