I visited Catfish Cafe this past Friday based on a Groupon i'd purchased. I had whiting, yams and potatoe salad which were all good. My issue was with the service. There was only one server on a Friday night and she was handling dine in and take out. She also advised us that the Groupon could only be used on a bill of $30 or more. Initially we had a hard time finding the place because there wasn't a "Catfish Cafe" sign it only says "Soul food" outside (see picture) and this is in a seedy looking industrial area. The signage was pretty poor so we initially went into door on the left which was the takeout area but realized we were in the wrong spot. Once in the dining area what a greater disappointment it looked dingy and worst of all It smelled horrible (like bug spray). We asked a couple about the food and the guy assured us the food was ok. What an expensive meal for the portions provided--1 piece of catfish and 2 small sides. There food ratio in size does not warrant the $15 dollar price tag rounded up. Food is not all that great, and I've come here before it closed down [for the second time???] Now, it's reopened for the third time and I've got to say that the food and service has gone down. I ordered lunch twice from here since this last reopening, and first time, i wanted over an hour for my food, with them telling me 15 more minutes every 10 minutes. After waiting for an hour, I asked my money back so i could buy some fried chicken from across the street and they wouldn't let me, holding me for the last 20 minutes until my order came. The chicken was very dry. This last time I ordered, I learned from my mistake and called in ahead of time. They said 30 minutes which was realistically 45 minutes, but that's not bad compared to last time. When I got my food (which was $2 more then I expected because I looked at their old menu... no updated menu and their website is down) I was a bit unhappy. I ordered candied yams over the phone only to be shot in the heart when they informed me they didn't have any when I went there to pick up. This is probably my favorite thing from there. The jerk sauce on the chicken was WAY too salty to eat. I ended up scraping off the sauce and eating just the chicken. Defeats the purpose of eating jerk chicken. My co-workers's collared greens was also way too salty. It was like eating fresh seaweed with some salt added. NASTY. I would only come here for the chicken and Waffles when they have it on special for $5 when I'm bored with the food around here. Even then, this place has just ruined themselves for me. read more
