Now that my kids are a little bit older, I saw that my town had a Yoga studio that had opened recently (I think!) so I found a great deal, a month pass for $30.00, I figured I could give it a few tries before making a commitment. The studio is amazingly beautiful, the ceiling was wood planked, the entrance to the floor is so simple but yet so chic. The building is dark with light wood accents, I love it! Lots of parking too! My first day was yesterday, the instructor, Shawn was soo nice. He hugged me instead of shaking my hand, he was soo welcoming! I told him I was a beginner and that this is my 1st time doing Yoga, EVER. He made me feel very welcome, told me I was free to go at my own pace and no need to over exert myself on my first day. I felt nervous because you cant help but feel self conscious but everyone there was so nice, they smiled and said hi (hello Seattle freeze? haha) the class was easy. The workouts are genuinely challenging too, not the basic generic Pilates you might expect. She'll stop and correct your form or your breathing mid-movement if something's off, which makes a real difference. I leave every single session with shaky legs or shaky arms, which for me is the sign of a good workout. She also has two reformers so duet sessions are actually a real option. The environment is comfortable and scrupulously clean - which is a big thing for me at any kind of gym or studio! I've been taking PIlates - they offer mat Pilates, which is a serious workout - YogaTone, a dance / Yoga fusion developed by the owner, Kara Keating, and Flow Yoga, which is a series of continuous movements that build strength and flexibility. My wife and I have both been taking classes at Movement Arts for around three years. Some reasons why, aside from good teachers and a super clean, comfortable environment, are: I like that the instructors - even in the group classes - take the time to work with individual students, helping us with our form and approach. The wide variety of classes and the fact that they offer classes in the morning, afternoon and early evenings most day makes it very convenient to attend the classes we want. The studio also offers regular yoga excursions - at reasonable prices - to places like Maui, Costa Rica and other spots - all in search of the perfect Downward Dog! :) Finally, I appreciate the community feel of Movement Arts - it is definitely not like a gym, where you go to work out and then - you're gone.
