The atmosphere easily sets one at ease. Although somewhat of a clumsy participant myself right now, I feel nothing less than 100% accepted in each class. And speaking of the first class, the first nights' sleep after taking a class? Like none I'd had in a very LONG time - wonderful. Over 60 (the new 40), I am bound and determined to stay moving just the way I feel ( 40?). With Master Maki and Master Ko, I believe I am continuing on the right track!

It is over a year since writing the above review and I am sad to report I have very different…read morefeelings about Body & Brain. In the beginning, as indicated in the above review, the gentle stretching was very healing for my SI joint injury. On a daily basis I gave very vocal positive feedback to the center owner and to the other classmates. From the very start I had heard about their all important workshop "Finding True Self," and made plans to attend one scheduled for December of 2023. As I recall, the cost was about $400 for the one day workshop. There was some lecture material, but most of that was information I had gleaned from my master's in counseling program at the university. The leader does not speak the best English, so close attention is needed to be certain everything is understood. Before long the group -- 4 participants, along with about 12 to 16 facilitators and helpers were involved in what I can only describe as primal screaming. I don't know the words they were screaming, but the decibel level was so high that I had piercing pains in my left ear. Finally, the screaming stopped and we were asked how we were feeling. I very directly and emphatically told the entire assembly that the noise level in the room was damaging to human hearing. As a certificated health teacher I well-know about the damage of loud noises. I was then given a pair of flimsy, and, frankly, worthless earplugs. Turns out there would be several more screaming sessions. I had very good earplugs at home but had not been advised to bring them. Also, I had accepted a ride that day so did not have my car with me. My family were all traveling. I could have, and should have, called an Uber to leave but I knew that my leaving would be taken as an insult. I toughed it out. Then, at the very end we were involved in some kind of community hugging, that held no value to me because the entire day had been such a disappointment. We were each "awarded" a single rose at the end. I was immediately overcome with guilt because I did not believe I had done anything to earn any kind of an award. My ears rang with tinnitus for many weeks after this nightmare. There was a follow-up session conducted online, but I was the only one who attended. Then there was an in-person follow-up session where other participants shared that the entire workshop experience had been very positive for them. I was direct in sharing that I did not have a positive experience. I saw no benefit for myself or for Body & Brain for me to lie about it. Had I known about the screaming -- probably five or six times throughout the day -- I would never have agreed to participate and, certainly, would not have paid money to participate. Even after I told the group that the decibel level was so loud that it was damaging to human hearing, none of the facilitators made any effort to reduce the noise level. During at least one of the screaming sessions I looked up and saw the leader screaming into a microphone, so loudly that his head was shaking back and forth. This could not have been therapeutic for him or anyone else in the room. Body & Brain offers many retreats and workshops that take place in Arizona and New Zealand (I believe) and this Finding True Self workshop is required before anyone is permitted to participate in these other, far more expensive workshops. In June 2023 the center I was attempting to renew my 3-month membership and the owner kept pressuring me to renew for the coming year. Well I am a senior citizen, over the age of 80, and I don't usually plan that far in advance. But her high pressure sales tactics were so persistent that I finally agreed. Then in January of this year I began to have some health issues and was not able to attend on a regular basis. After missing a few days, I ended up not attending at all. Then, last week, the end of June I was feeling much better one morning and decided to attend the 9:30 class. After the class the center owner approached me rudely to tell me that she had found me so negative for the entire year I had attended that she did not want to work with me anymore. She seemed to forget the very positive review (above) that I had written last year, as well as all the oral compliments I had given about the help the gentle stretching had afforded me. I left with the intention of never returning. Now that a week has passed I feel I must write a follow-up that is completely honest. There are accusations that Body & Brain is a cult, and after my experience, I am inclined to agree. I suspect the issue in my case was that I was very vocal about not liking a workshop that I was expected to like, and, indeed, was required to like. Under no circumstances would I recommend Body & Brain to anyone. There are community health clubs that offer all levels of yoga, and often medical insurance pays for the cost of participation. In addition, there are private yoga establishments with very competitive prices for participation.

The classes I made it to were not crowded and I appreciated the large locker rooms with showers. I was happy to be able to check it out with a new student special and made it to 3 classes. 2 weeks for 20 dollars is very reasonable and gives you a good feel for the studio and what they have to offer. I had some initial trouble signing up, but got that sorted out on my own. I think the class I enjoyed most was the Tuesday night Yin. It was very relaxing after an exhausting day of work. I'm not a huge fan of Bikram style classes and the two Hatha classes I took both ended up being this style even though they were taught by different instructors. I am really sad to have missed out on the Barre classes which is what most appealed to me at this studio. I'll definitely be back at some point in the future.

The plan is very clean and well maintained and the staff are very friendly and helpful. The prices are about the same as most yoga studios. I am a former yoga instructor and I'm pretty picky about my yoga classes. I've also practiced for over 7 years on a regular basis and on and off for about 15-16 yrs. I absolutely love their vinyasa style/power classes but felt the sculpt was just okay. I taught a lot of sculpt down in San Diego and we were trained to teach to the beat of the music + a heavy emphasis on verbal cues to set you up. I definitely will come back for the vinyasa classes again when things settle down a bit with covid and I'm in town again.

I practice vinyasa and this wasn't flow at all. All you did was like sit or lay on your mat. I attempted to try to do more of a flow and added on but at the end got reprimanded. The owner first laughed at me then told me I needed to do what the class was doing. I was trying to make modifications of the poses she was making us do so I could feel like I was working out. But she told me I needed to do the poses. Honestly the women was rude and the "yoga" sucked. If I could go back in time I would and never go.

She took time to listen to any history of injury, and tailored instruction to those that needed it, and offered helpful insights. You park out front, then walk through the breezeway, the turn right to take the stairs up to the studio. The front door is kinda around back from the main street, if that makes sense. The studio was not heated when I went. There are great props (straps and blocks are high quality and in good shape). A great place to make progress and celebrate all you are and can be capable of.

In fact, I've got range-of-motion issues in my upper body, so the thought of trying to be all athletic - in front of other people no less - was intimidating. I'd heard that yoga could eventually help me move without pain, so I sucked it up and started trying out studios. Of the many I've been to since, there are 3 that stand out. Yoga in the Center is one such standout. The studio itself is very spa-like in feel. It's all light walls, stone, & dark wood, with plenty of natural light. They have two practice rooms - a main room and a smaller one for prenatal and kid's yoga. I've only taken classes in the big room - it's very spacious, and the studio has a lot of props available for students to use as needed. It's lovely and comfortable. For me, what really makes the place are the teachers. I have been to studios where the teachers seemed frustrated with my inability to get myself into perfect alignment. I get it - I look like an amazon woman, therefore I *should* be strong enough to hold the pose. If my shoulders won't move that way, well, I should just try harder, and maybe one day I'll get it. Here, the teachers are encouraging, and helpful. The very first class I took with Carrie, she noticed me struggling and popped over to offer me a prop and an alternate version of the pose. I've learned so much from her. I've found that everyone here is really great at teaching to the whole class. When their schedule says All-levels, that's what they mean. The teacher will show different expressions of the pose so everyone can choose the version that works with their body - no judgment. Do be aware - Mill Creek Town Center is a busy place, and it can take a bit to find a parking spot in the evenings or on weekends. The studio is well worth planning in a little extra parking time. =)
