Did a walk-in last Monday to try my very first scuba dive and was greeted very kindly like everyone in the island. I was first asked to do an e-learning course and then my instructor, Rane, went over the material again with me. Which was great as I can see how thorough he was and how much safety is in everyone's priority. Rane was pretty cool and relaxed, which is also why I feel assured before and during the dive. And the dive, divine, the water was very clear, a lot of fishes and even got to see a baby ray. Overall an awesome experience and very much worth it. Catalina Divers Supply is the shop for all your scuba/snorkel/water needs in Avalon! I live in LA, so after a little drive down to the Long Beach Catalina Express Harbor, we arrived in Avalon. You can take a golf cart over to Casino Point, however the walk is really nice too. We opted for the walk and it only took us about 15 minutes to walk from where the Catalina Express drops you off to Casino Point. Right when you get close to the casino, you'll see the doors for Catalina Divers Supply. The convenience of the shop being directly across the water entry stairs at Casino Point is the best. Bring your gear, or bring none - you can always rent with them even if you forgot to reserve beforehand.. most of the time they can accommodate. After my friends and I got our Advanced Certs completed, we wanted to dive around casino point but were a little weary we'd get ourselves lost. Two of us initially went on a guided dive with Mark back in February and it was a BLAST. We were a little concerned that it would be incredibly chilly - but it turned out to be a beautiful day and we saw some great stuff! Came back this past weekend to explore again and we had so much fun the first time, we booked a guided dive and had Suzy this time! Suzy's energy is infectious - she is an incredible athlete and learning from her/hearing her stories is so motivating. My friends and I were going to guide ourselves the next day, and Suzy encouraged us by giving us pointers and reaffirming our skills. If you do the guided dive, you get access to hot showers for pre and post diving, secure area for your things, and a bathroom! But note this is ONLY AVAILABLE when you do the guided dive. You do not get this access if you are just renting gear from them. I also left my things with them overnight so I wouldn't have to carry everything the next day and it was great! They're almost certainly the most professional scuba shop on the island! We know this because we worked with four different scuba shops during our stay on Catalina. We booked a boat trip with them, and they took us to two beautiful locations that had better visibility and were far less crowded than the kelp forest at Casino Point. The boat operators did an excellent job of describing the dives and conditions, and were great to work with. Trip was in October 2024 -- apparently this time of year is the sweet spot for fully grown kelp and good visibility. The boat requires a minimum of 6 divers to rent, so it sometimes is cancelled if there aren't enough people. read more

The website was a little confusing but once I got out there, it was like a family. Diving with Suzy for two days straight, meeting Joel the filmmaker and David (who took my reservation) as well as Michael and the rest of the crew was solid. I dove with a bad mask the first dive but got up close with Black Sea bass and the second day my friend Kim dove with suzy and I. It was an amazing trip! BEST DIVE EVER. I've been diving recreationally for 30 years, and my dive with Suzie was one of the best I've ever had, and Catalina Divers Supply one of the absolute best dive shops I've ever worked with. They're friendly, the process is smooth and professional, they rent great equipment, and from the moment I checked in it was a lot of fun. Suzie was THE BEST. She obviously loves diving and that was infectious. She's patient and thoughtful, corrected my mistakes with a smile, and was generally an incredible guide. The dive was absolutely fabulous - I was a little afraid, given it was my first cold-water winter dive, but she got me through my nerves into the cold water. We saw awesome things and had a great experience. Afterwards, even though Suzie was off the clock, she was still present and a lot of fun to talk to about everything. I 100% will be coming back to CDS next time we're in Catalina, and my husband will be joining me (they persuaded him to try it!) read more

Kylie was our divemaster, and she was excellent! I was a newly certified diver who felt anxious about my first boat trip, and she was very reassuring and encouraging. During the boat ride she asked me about my other dive experiences and helped me retroactively troubleshoot the issues I'd before. The boat was captained by Chelsea, who stepped in at the last minute to take over for the original guy. She was calm and unfazed by this change. The dive sites we went to (Lava Wall and Italian Gardens) were simply spectacular. When my friends and I emerged at the surface we shouted to one another, "I didn't know they even got that good!" My only suggestion for the business is to offer guides. We had to call around to hire a DM since CDS doesn't have ones who enter the water with us, which was incredibly stressful and expensive. We would rather have just packaged the guide with the rental and boat fee as one single service instead of having to contract with multiple vendors. read more

Loved my dive day with instructor Mark. After 175 dives, I thought it was time I did my dry suit course so I could enjoy the cooler California waters. All my dives have been tropical and I'm a wimp that gets cold after 45 mins even in warm waters. The dry suit is a revelation and Mark did an awesome job of showing me the different types of suits and tips for using them. My body and feet were toasty after 3 dives where water temps went down to 16c/60f. Next step will be finding the right dry suit to buy. With diving there's always gear to buy. Now I'm thinking of keeping going and doing rescue diver course. I'll def go with Mark if I do. read more

A friendly female clerk help me get situated. The snorkel rental included a wetsuit, which is necessary in Dec. Even so, I could not stay in the water for more than an hour. The area sectioned off isn't huge but you get a great view of giant kelp and good amount of fish. Although not a lot of variety. Due to the season? I counted five species but I am not expert. The clerk offered me a hood, which we both forgot about. I probably would have lasted longer with one. A benefit of this outfitter for snorkeling and beginner diving is the water entrypoint is a short walk. SNUBA is not available in the fall/winter. CASINO POINT DIVING One of my favorite places to dive in SoCal is Catalina Island. I have had Casino Point on my bucket list for quite some time but not sure why its taken me so long to travel here to make the dives. We decided to clear our weekend schedule and come here for a weekend full of diving. Customer service over the phone wasn't as pleasant as it could be. I've made reservations online but had to call in to confirm a few things and never really felt welcomed and felt like the conversation is rushed to get off the phone with you. When you set your dives, go to Casino Point, they are on the backside of the round building. Why must they pick the shaded and coldest part of Casino Point for set-up?! We missed our scheduled dive at 10am because I left some of my dive gear in my trunk in Long Beach and didn't want to use rental gear. They accommodated us at 12pm. The following day we were able to get a couple more dives in. SATURDAY DIVES. Instead of 2-3 dives, we stuck out with 1 dive to have the rest of the afternoon to eat dinner and explore Avalon in a golf cart. Our Saturday dive was with our guide Jeff. We got in our gear and went diving to see the sunken sailboat and play in the kelp. With him I went down to 84ft! Instead of lugging around our gear in our wet luggages, he offered to keep our gear stored at the site. That was a huge help! However, the next day our stuff was wet and cold - they weren't hung to dry. After our dive, he even gave us tips of where to go to get lobster to eat for dinner. SUNDAY DIVES. We did 2 dives with our guide Marc. You can tell Marc is very passionate about diving. He was very patient and willing to teach and show. He allowed us to pick which route we wanted to take and what we wanted to see. Something went wrong with my mask and it flooded, I couldn't clear it during the dive or even after surfacing. We used the spare rental which fixed the issue and we had a good dive. We moved slow so we could enjoy the sea life.. there was SO MUCH TO SEE down there. Afterwards, we were rushing to the ferry doc to catch our ferry back to Long Beach and Marc offered us to hop in his golf cart and take us to the ferry so we don't miss it. Well, like most good things I've experienced in life... this was a last minute decision I did not regret! Backstory, after over 100 straight days of work and a small window opening for some quality time with my girlfriend... we started brainstorming ideas of fun things to do... Earlier in the year while browsing the dive shop, CDS, on the island, the proprietor described the Discover Scuba Adventure and what it entailed. The price was significantly cheaper than a full blown course and so it got us thinking we should try it first. We've always wanted to try scuba but since my girlfriend has had trouble equalizing past 20 feet when we free dive, we've always held off on a full blown scuba course fearful we may waste money on something we can't fully use. It was Monday and we booked a Friday adventure. As soon as I booked, work called and informed me I absolutely had to work Friday. My girlfriend called Tuesday and the shop managed to make a spot for us in the afternoon Wednesday. Wednesday - The ride over on the ferry was good like it usually is... great views and conversations with other travelers heading to the island for fun. When we got to the shop they were waiting for us and everything was orderly and professional. The back area where the class was held was super clean and the showers were spotless. Our guide Mark was a very knowledgeable and gracious instructor, thorough with his instructions and incredibly patient. He immediately came across as one of those guys you know could handle any situation under sea cracking a big smile the whole time. Once we got in the water safely, we headed to a flatline and buoy to demonstrate proficiency on three exercises. At some point my girlfriend, started to feel uncomfortable going down. She gave a signal that she wanted to go up and Mark immediately brought her up... we tried to go down again and she signaled up again...and we went up. I was very concerned for my girlfriend, because I know she was feeling self-induced pressure. This is where Mark came in as a HERO in my book. He made it very clear that we weren't in a rush and that if we spent the entire morning just getting used to the gear at the surface it was entirely ok. I'm not entirely sure how he said it, or what he said... but he went full horse whisperer on her... (well... hot lady whisperer would be more accurate) after a lil discussion she was as calm as I'd ever seen her and we were on our way down. The dive flew by, it was soooo much fun... it was a nice change from freediving just to stay down... and breathe! At one point Mark started guiding us in one direction and it took me a moment to realize what I was seeing in front of me. It was a HUGE several hundred pound Black Sea Bass!!! We swam so close I felt like I could have reached out and touched it almost. The crazy thing was, is it just turned for a second and sat there looking at us... I half expected Mark to give it a friendly fist pump or something before it swam off... It was amazing!!! Then a little later we swam to the underwater Cousteau Tribute. At that point I knew we had reached close to 40 Ft. At that point I just became super stoked that my girlfriend was able to experience all this safely and under no pressure the entire time. Throughout the dive Mark held onto us and continually checked with us to make sure we were doing good. I will say that even though he was right there with us... I completely forgot Mark was watching us sometimes and totally became raptured in the dive. This was for sure one of those "I'll never forget" experiences!!! read more

Fantastic dive! The kelp forest was magical. Tons of fish. We saw two really HUGE ones, I think they were giant sea bass. They were approximately five feet long and they were just hanging out in the kelp not bothered by us as we were able to get quite close. The location was so convenient, just suit up, walk over to the stairs and go! As soon as you step into the ocean, you are greeted by super friendly bright orange Garibaldi, which is fun since they are the official fish of California. Chelsea was our dive master and she was excellent. She spoke clearly and in an organized way regarding the dive plan. She made me feel very safe as she helped me check my gear and reviewed safety protocol. During the dive she pointed out wildlife that was hiding without disturbing the creatures, which is important to me.. I will definitely request her again. Next time I will bring my underwater camera! read more

Booked a dive. It took an extraordinary amount of time to get outfitted. Honest estimate; 1:20. The guide assigned to us-seemed nice enough and knowledgeable, was completely distracted by other duties. He would give us wet suits to try on and then disappear. Then give us masks to try on, and disappear. Boots; same story. And on and on. By the time we were in the water and submerging was 1:30 minutes after the start. We have dived all over the world. I've been outfitted out the back of vans. Beside boats. And in shops. This stands out as egregious waste of time. Will not go back and can't recommend it. read more

Their shop is nicely appointed and right next to the Avalon Dive Park (as such, they are the only game in town for the Dive Park (the other dive operators for the Dive Park are now gone). HOWEVER, they have inflexible policies and are willing to renege on rental contracts if they feel like it. And those policies are NOT shown on their website and are subject to change at their whim. It's their way or the highway. This might not affect everyone using their services. People coming there and depending on their services or rentals should be warned. read more

I received my advanced open water certification with Catalina Divers and I really enjoyed my experience having Larry as my Instructor! Larry has a fun personality and is thorough with his instructions. It was easy learning these important new skills and I appreciated his patience with all my questions.:) The night dive was cool and not only did Larry prepare me before going into the water, he helped bring me back to land when I was feeling some nausea. I went in April which has colder water temperatures, however the kelp was super vibrant and got to see some amazing sea life. I had a wonderful weekend exploring Catalina and look forward to my next trip back! read more

The staff doesn't cater to serious divers. I took a trip to Catalina with a group of 8 divers. While we brought most of our gear, a few of us rented tanks here for the three full days of diving we did. We had an issue where they would not accept cash for tank fills. We were all required to sign a waiver to have a credit card on file with them, and THEN we could fill our tanks. I've never experienced this at another shop before. When we asked, they said for "liability reasons". We thought that was strange but complied. We had another issue where they refused to let us use their hose to rinse off a dive camera. When we asked why, they once again said it was for "liability reasons". When we asked what they meant, they said that covid was a reason we weren't allowded to touch their hose, because we could blame them if we got covid after rinsing the camera. I asked if they would rinse the camera for us; then they said the hose wasn't connected and they would not hook it up until the end of the day. This was disappointing. I would hope that a shop who is serving divers would be willing to help other divers keep sensitive gear, like a dive camera, in good condition. They have a good location and I'm not aware of another shop in that area to use, so I don't think they care much about how they treat visitors who aren't going out with them on a scuba package. Everyone will have to go to them. read more

I am so incredibly grateful to the team at Catalina Divers Supply for helping me achieve a literal life goal by getting my Open Water Diver certification. All communication was great from the first contact, where David worked some scheduling magic and was responsive within the timeframe he promised. Elaina, my instructor, reached out the morning before to confirm the meeting time and make sure I was feeling up to the task at hand. Elaina is AWESOME and make me feel so safe and so capable the entire time. She is patient, thorough, and observant in such a way that before even getting to the halfway point of the course, I was feeling more comfortable in my techniques and skills than I would have imagined possible. I am so grateful to have been certified under Elaina, as I feel fully prepared for my future dives. I hope to return for advanced classes once I get more experience under my dive belt! The whole team was friendly and personable and were cheering me on to get my certification - I really appreciated how supportive they were of me, a stranger, and how sincere everyone was. I was able to observe a few briefings of guided dive and snorkel groups and was impressed with the level of attention that every member of the team paid to their groups, with a focus on safety and information retention. Based on my observations, I would recommend this team as a very safe company even for those who may not be as strong in their skills. Sadly, this was one of the worst adventures/tours I have ever done. We opted for the snuba dive tour - a cross between snorkeling and scuba diving. Tip: Do not book tours through Catalina Tours. They charge you more than if you booked directly with the company. And they don't give you all the necessary info. We booked the snuba dive through Catalina Tours, instead of directly through Scuba Luv. And we paid $10 more a person and didn't get any details and when or where to meet the tour. When we arrived on Catalina, I called Scuba Luv and was told to meet them at their booth as Descano Beach Club 10 minutes before the tour starts. When we arrived at their booth, we were handed a waiver to fill out and then the staffer left and never returned. Another staffer came in and asked why we were there. He seemed quite confused. Then he told us to go to the side of the booth to get our wetsuits and equipment. They didn't have a wetsuit to fit James O., so he was stuck in one that was too small for him. Most companies ask your height and weight when you make a reservation so they can be sure to have the proper equipment for you. Not here. I was then handed a wetsuit by Christopher, our apparent guide, without anyone asking me about my clothing size or weight. I did hear another staffer ask this of the other 2 girls on the snuba tour with us. My wetsuit was about 2 sizes too big and full of holes. No instruction was given as to how to put on the wetsuit, unlike other tours I've done. James O. was struggling to get his on. Mine went on way too easy as it was too big, but no one cared or checked the fit (also unlike other tours I've been on). Ditto on all the other equipment - no checking for fit on the masks, fins, etc. And big ditto on the weight belts. Christopher didn't seem to factor in at all the different weights of folks on this. It was rather chaotic and we didn't really know what was going on. It took awhile for the other 2 girls on our tour to get suited up. It was about 25 mins after the tour start time before we walked down to the beach. We then had to navigate rocks and swim out to a small floating platform. We then boarded that and received like 30 seconds of instruction. Our guide really didn't seem to care at all and was just thoroughly annoyed by any sort of questions or hesitancy. As this tour is advertised as only needing to know how to swim and good for beginners and kids, it was crazy that our guide seemed to expect us to all be experts. After we got in the water, I was struggling and it didn't seem like my regulator was working. Christopher was annoyed beyond belief and blamed it on me not being able to do it. After 10 mins or so, he finally went to the float and swapped out my regulator. And, of course, I was then fine. But then I struggled to get below the surface. I tried just being upright and floating down, which worked for James O. because of the weights. That didn't work for me. I tried turning upside down and diving head first. That didn't work either. I literally couldn't get myself to sink. I was so frustrated. I'm sure it didn't help that my wetsuit was too large and ballooning with water. And there had been absolutely zero tips or instruction on how to "dive". And then about 5 minutes later, it was all over. I finally was able to get underwater and breathe, tried and failed to get further down, and then it was all done. It felt like no time at all in the actual water. And everyone's hoses kept getting tangled. Shouldn't our guide have done something to help keep this from happening? Or offered some tips and instruction on keeping it from happening? We then boarded the float thing, took everything but the wetsuit off, and swam back to shore. When we got back to the booth, it appeared to have been only 45 minutes since our start time, not an hour. And as we talked to the other 2 girls, they had just as frustrating of a time. And they also were really disappointed in our guide, or lack thereof. One of the girls had asthma and both were inexperienced. And both felt like they were yelled at and talked down to by Christopher. This was such a complete waste of money. We paid almost $90 each to have a miserable experience! We then walked over to the main office (not the booth) to talk to a manager. She was very nice and took notes as we told her what happened, but left it with a "I'll talk to him and get his side of the story." As if we were lying or weren't legit upset customers. And when I pointed about my bright red legs with a rash, which wasn't there before putting on their wetsuit and had never happened with any other wetsuit, she was all "yeah, that happens". But at least she was nice-ish and did give us rental equipment for free to go snorkeling. It was this that makes this review 2 stars instead of 1. In short, I would not do a tour with this company. At the very least, make sure Christopher is not the guide for your tour. read more

We did the Sea Trek, aka " helmet diving". I have tried scuba and snorkeling, and at the totem pole I would rank this in the bottom of the three. It was adventurous but not my cup of tea. We got there mid afternoon, signed the waivers and sized up for wetsuits and water shoes. We walked a couple yards to the end of the beach and we had two options to get the raft that was about 100 meters away from the shore. 1. Swim to the raft or 2. Hold on to a small inflatable tube while the instructor drag you to the boat. I am an ok swimmer so I swam while my other two friends were hauled over. My friends chose me to go down first since we have to climb a ladder in a single file until we were under water. They placed the helmet on top of my head and I was to breathe like Darth Vader. As I descended, the instructor pushed me down fast, maybe since I swam he thought I was comfortable with the water? But what happened next was not to my liking. I was descending down too fast, because of the push I could not equalize fast enough and water started going into the helmet. So I swam up. I knew my friends were watching me so I had to play it off that I'm ok... But deep down inside I was having a panic attack and I knew I would become claustrophobic once they placed the helmet on me again... I did not want to strike fear into my other friends, so I laughed everything off saying it was my problem and not the aggressive push under the water. I descended for the second time. This time he was more gentle. I got down and waited for my other two friends to join me. We walked in a single file and held a rope that led us to a path. The water was nice clear and warm. But there was hardly any fishes. The instructor grabbed some kelp and popped them, I guess that's the under water trick. Overall I can say "been there and done that", but I would not do it again. I felt restricted with the helmet and there was not much to see unlike snorkeling or scuba diving. But who knows, you may have a better time than I and would be lucky to see other things than just kelp. read more

After my second series of dives I wanted to write a great review as a thank you since I first discovered the shop and yelp. I absolutely love Catalina Scuba Luv and would highly recommend them if you're looking for a good dive shop while on the island. I'm already Advanced certified but when some friends from San Diego mentioned they wanted to get their Open Water, I immediately thought of Catalina Scuba Luv. Diving in San Diego is okay but not not the best for beginners due to the long surface swims and the lack of cool things to see. I recommended they come out to Catalina and they loved it! They did their e-learning online in San Diego and then completed the skills and open water dives in the dive park. As for me, I wanted to continue my learning and signed up for the Deep Diver course. Chis Howard was my instructor and he was amazing. Before diving I mentioned that I wanted to work on my descents, especially free descents since I tend to struggle with the first 10 feet. Chris gave me a lot of tips and then after each dive would give me suggestions and ways to improve. The Catalina dive park is one of my favorite dive spots and it didn't disappoint this time. Chris knows the park like the back of his hand and I loved exploring some new spots. I mentioned my love for wrecks and he was sure to include swimming by a number of the wrecks in the park. We even got permission from the Harbor Master to dive the Valiant, which was awesome and worth the long surface swim! As I continue my diving, I love to come back to Catalina and will most definitely be back to Catalina Scuba Luv, whether it's a guided tour or for more learning, I love the shop and recommend them to anyone who I know will be diving in Catalina. read more

I recently had an opportunity to visit Catalina Island for the first time in my 30+ years as a SoCal resident. I love to be in the ocean and have started working on my OWD certification. Through a recommendation of a friend I went on a day trip with Catalina Scuba Luv lead by Capt'n Bob and Dive Master Charles aka "Nash." Both Capt'n Bob and Nash are accomplished divers and love the ocean. Nash is an avid diver with over 1000 dives and also paddle boards the island. Bob has been in Catalina since he left college and owner of #CatalinaScubaLuv. They took our group, ten divers and two snorkelers to three different diving spots; Long Point and Pirates Cove, Twin Rocks and Torqua Springs. Not yet certified, I snorkeled at the last two spots. In the last year I've been on a few dive boats in CA and Central America mostly, and I have to say this one, the King Neptune was clean and in great working order. Capt'n Bob has great stories and took us to places with breathtaking views of the Kelp forests and awesome California underwater inhabitants. At Torqua I saw hundreds of fish including Garibaldi, Senorita, Perch, Rock, and then floated in on top of about 25 leopard sharks in the shallows; SO much fun and exciting. Nash is the BEST dive master I've had the pleasure to work with; he is knowledgeable, Zen and fun. He coaxes timid first timers in the water with pop cultural references like "easy-breezy," and gives great recommendations to veteran divers for the best experience. Nash commands respect while simultaneously providing each diver, snorkeler or topsider his or her individual needs. I think the best demonstration of Nash's talents was when he encountered a self proclaimed Master Diver, who it turned out had not dove in years. The diver suffered some anxiety within a few minutes of entering the first dive spot. Nash was able to get him matched up with a buddy and talked him through the anxiety so he could enjoy the next spots without making the diver feel more embarrassed. So happy we chose this group of people for our intro dive. They were very thorough in the skills training and watching over us.
