The view from the sky looks exactly like Pleiku Air Base in a way. Surrounded by a dense green environment. When you're flying fixed wing the landing feels almost like you're in the 1990 film called "Air America" starring Mel Gibson and Robert Downey Jr. Landing at the top of the mountain. PRETTY EPIC!!! The airport of the sky is probably the most secluded airport in the world and the most low traffic airport. Almost every time we flew there it's either only us or if we're lucky we'll see one to two aircrafts. The land fee is $25 is which a total bargain to fly into the most epic airport in California. They're a bit overpriced than most of the restaurants you'll ever eat in the mainly since everything they serve has to be shipped over to the island either by plane or boat. The food is absolutely delicious though prepared homemade style by the most family friendly staff there is. We all love eating there indefinitely. I think by far the most delicious burgers and tacos I ever had in most restaurants in Orange County were from this restaurant. Buffalo burgers are on everyone's favorite list. It's a MUST TRY when you're at The Airport of The Sky restaurant. :) When you're already here you can either take a bus shuttle to the main city Avalon or to Two Harbors the other side of Catalina Island. Or you can try walking but it is EXTREMELY far to hike yourself back to the city.

Enjoy landing here in a sunny day (it does close at 5pm so make arrangements or you're spending the night!) there is a nice airport loop trail where you can sometimes catch bison. The restaurant had decent food, the gift shop has cool merchandise and snacks for hikers, pilots, guests and tourists who stop here on the wildlife tour of the island. There's a fire place for cooler days and the option to camp if you're a conservancy member. You can also grab a shuttles a few times a day down to avalon but it's a bumpy ride. Have met the airport manager, Carl and he's lovely!

We decided to try Tri Shuttle after seeing the positive reviews, and we were glad we did! Unlike Uber, this is a small business, and so it's much easier to be in direct contact with your driver. Tien was our driver both ways. He was friendly, prompt, and a good driver. He texted to confirm our pickups both times, and when we were coming back, he had tracked our flight so he was ready to pick us up at the curb. Getting a rideshare pickup at the airport can be a big hassle, and you usually have to go to a separate area. Then you have to wait for your ride, which your driver may cancel for whatever reason. But with Tri Shuttle, you get picked up in Arrivals as if you're having a friend or family member pick you up. Their customer service and professionalism were excellent (if you use rideshare, you know those qualities can be REALLY hit-or-miss), giving us more peace of mind to enjoy our trip. There are self-serve pamphlets for all the various attractions on the island. My brother's particular question was around getting info for the jet ski tour from Long Beach to Catalina. The guide explained that those originate from Long Beach, and that the jet ski tour guides here in Avalon provide one hour tours around the island. That was enough info to point us in the right direction, and we continued on our way.

The answer I got from the woman working behind the counter was, "Here's a brochure. Scan the QR code. You can contact Catalina Express or take the helicopter, but I don't know their availability." What kind of answer is that?!?!?!?! Here, scan a QR code? Seriously?????? I even asked this lady about the airport and she couldn't even tell me when they close for the day. Couldn't even tell me if there were private planes or private jets that fly in and out of this airport. How can you be working at a visitor center and not be able to answer basic questions about the airport? I needed to get off this island! I was ready to pay $1,000 or more to get home at the end of the night. This lady was completely incompetent and offered zero help and clearly demonstrated she had zero knowledge. After leaving the visitor center, I had to call a family member on the mainland and have them help find me a ride off this island! Within 1 hour, I had a ticket on the 7:45 PM Catalina Express. For our roundtrip airport transport, we confirmed twice over the phone that we needed a rear-facing car seat and a vehicle that could fit five passengers with luggage. The driver showed up without the correct car seat, and the car was too small for our bags. When we brought this up, we were told the driver "forgot." This created a stressful and unsafe ride for our baby. On our return ride, the same driver was over 20 minutes late, joked on the phone that "no one's coming," and when we asked for an ETA, gave no clear answer. When my elderly father expressed frustration, the driver threatened to leave us at the airport. This was deeply unsettling--especially since the driver knew our home address. After the trip, I spoke with Rich (the manager), who acknowledged both incidents were unacceptable and promised a refund and a free ride to make it right. Neither happened. It's not about the money--it's the principle. The broken promises and continued lack of follow-through make me feel we were lied to just to de-escalate the situation. I don't take writing negative reviews lightly, but this experience was unacceptable. This company may have good ratings, but if something goes wrong, you're on your own. I would not trust them again--especially if you're traveling with children.
