We started at the old location about 3:15 on a Wednesday afternoon. It was closed with a sign that said please visit the new location. So, we went to their new location in New Hartford. Stood waiting to be seated for a full ten minutes. Our presence wasn't even acknowledged. 3:30 in the afternoon, not a busy rush hour time. An employee did see us waiting but ignored us and went on her way. I would have expected at least a "Be with you shortly" or something. But nothing. Who knew that this was my Grandma's favorite restaurant? Not I, but after a recent family event we came here for lunch and it didn't disappoint. I had the Chicken Marsala which was prepared very well (though the side of red-sauce spaghetti was forgettable), and the sausage & greens soup was tasty (though extremely salty). They had a great selection of pies and the slide of bourbon cheesecake was well done. I don't know if they made it in-house or not, but I would order it again. Others enjoyed their meals, though another person's appetizer platter (essentially deep fried everything) wasn't touched much. Apparently, it tasted heavily of used oil which had previously cooked fish. Our server was pleasant, though after she delivered the food she never checked back with us again and I was dying for more water. She walked by many times but never asked how we were doing, whether we needed anything, etc. That was disappointing. A fun place that I would be happy to visit again. read more

I've been at both location and the food is awful. Fish fry so greasy you could grease wheel bearings on my truck. Mozzarella sticks not even cooked only reheating value was the coleslaw which was good. The roll that came with The fish sandwich was like a sourdough roll, hard and absolutely no flavor. Whoever said "Breakfast is the most important meal of the day" is a kindred spirit of mine. As such, a classic diner is somewhere you may find me on a random weekend morning. Recently I had the chance to check out the Castlewood Café, situated not far from Utica University. Upon entering, you'll realize it's not going to win any style points. The interior is a bit dated, though not in the charming 50's diner sort of way. However, seating was plentiful, and seeing many of the tables with patrons was a good sign. I ordered the classic "Queen's Breakfast" - 2 eggs any style, hash browns, toast, a sausage patty, and 2 bacon slices. This is a pretty classic order for me and a good way for me to decide if it was worth the drive. We wanted to try a grilled blueberry muffin, but they had run out. My counterpart ordered the fruit crepes - a bit too much sweet for me in the morning, but they were very happy with their choice. The food arrived fairly quickly, a bit of a surprise with the crowd they had on hand. The eggs were perfectly cooked, the rye toast was great, and the breakfast meats were on point. The only disappointment was the hash browns. They were cooked very well, a bit crispy on the outside, soft in the inside, but were lacking in much flavor. Our server was attentive, though busy, and seemed a bit flustered at times. Overall no issue with the service we received though. I'd be more than happy to recommend the Castlewood for those looking for some good breakfast comfort food. read more

We got out to breakfast every weekend, we seen the news article on WKTV that they were opening up a 2nd location and we never heard of them so we wanted to try. Here's how it went: 1. My husband had lipstick on the side of his coffee cup. 2. We waited 45 minutes for our food. The person dropped it off and immediatetly turned around. Even with us having empty cups on the side. 3. Took 20 mins for waitress to come check on us after getting our food to get drinks and syrup for my husbands now COLD pancakes. 4. We paid for pancakes he took 2 bites out of because they were cold. I was done with my food way before the waitress finally came over. I hope they re-evaluate their waitresses and how they run it before opening a 2nd location. Walked in and had a server make eye contact, then quickly turn away to finish whatever she was doing. Another server came up to seat us just minutes later, but took her time coming back to us at the table (there were only 2 other tables sat in the entire restaurant). The appetizer, Castlewood Sampler, came out quick and tasted good. The main meals took forever to come out...The meatloaf and riggies were not the flavors we liked, but not bad either. The kiddos didn't complain about their meals, but between slow, unfriendly service and mediocre food, we see no reason to return. read more

Hands down one of the best places in the area for breakfast. Came here on Easter and it was packed. Surprisingly didn't wait that long, about 5 mins. It seemed like everyone was out with their family for breakfast. I ended up ordering the King's breakfast; came with two eggs, two strips of bacon, a sausage patty, hash browns, and two pancakes. Everything tasted delicious. No complaints on the food or the service. I couldn't even finish the pancakes, that's how filling it was. The staff was quick and friendly. I'll be back. read more

After eating breakfast out in all the local places scores of times, I have concluded that Castlewood is exceptional. The breakfast is very good, with some really different and interesting choices on the menu. I normally get an American Cheese Omelet - and its awesome. I think they make a really thin omelet and then fold it in, making several thin layers of egg with cheese in between. That results in a great tasting omelet with a texture that is pretty awesome. On Food TV they would call it mouthfeel. Its served with a slice of orange, toast and home fries that are awesome. We've had other things like fried eggs - simple you say? Yes but they always come exactly as you ordered them - over easy, medium or hard - they get it and it's perfect. The food is always hot and they obviously care about how it looks on the plate. It's never just slopped on like many place do when they get busy. Castlewood pays attention to details. The place is large with tables and booths and plenty of parking too. Very clean and service is fast with professional waiters. We have never been there for dinner but will be very soon. Easily a 5 star place recommended by this often picky writer. read more

I've been dining here since they opened. And it kills me to say that their level of service has taken a plunge. I've been there with absolutely nobody in there at 8am and my waitress was ambivalent towards me- her only customer. Ignoring me as she walked by, and later, l(literally 10 mins.),when she had other tables she totally ghosted me. Brought coffee refills to the others but not me. I figured maybe a bad day ??? But no, it wasn't, every time I've been there since, I've gotten the same treatment from her. I am polite i tip well, and my order is very simple. So i guess we'll travel a bit further for breakfast from now on. read more

Hair in the fries, they were also cold and soggy and unsalted what so ever and the wait was very long and the waitresses are very rude and unwelcoming and extremely unprofessional. I've tried this place before and last time it was an hour and 45 minute long wait. This is a very terrible place to go to. read more

First time there. Ordered the greens as appetizer. I thought they were good with lots of things in them but for the price the portions should have been bigger. Got the fish fry for dinner, and by looking at the picture - yes it was very overcooked. It was your normal fish fry with choice of side and etc. This one in particular was very overcooked though. Someone else got the side of pasta with their fish and there was 95% pasta with 5% sauce on top. The waitress was nice but she didn't come back to the table much. I have been to this restaurant just about a 100 times, if not more. I have nothing but great things to say about this restaurant. The service is a 10/10, always attentive and respectful towards you. No matter what time of day it is, the people are always very accommodating. I have never had a bad meal here, the food is always good. Mom and I split this huge omelette that had Italian sausage and peppers and such in it! we also split Canoli Pancakes which were a special going on, loved them!!! After coming back to this place countless amount of times, it seems that as time went on this place improved even more. First of all the food is great as always and they even redecorate their carpets which look much better and also their staff has improved even though they were always very good. Ordered takeout (2 fish fries) at 5:10, was told it would be ready in 30 mins. Waited over a half an hour, no food. After watching numerous people come in and leave before, one who mentioned ordering his food at 5:25 and who got the same thing, I asked if they could confirm they had my order. The woman at the register talked to someone and after another 10-15 minutes I got our food. All told I did not walk out of there until about 6:20. The food was hot and good but I am pretty sure are order was skipped of lost. It was Good Friday and I understand them being busy, my issue is that when I finally checked out there was no acknowledgement of my wait. Also, numerous people working could see me waiting and had I not asked about my order, I would probably still be waiting. Went there for late lunch on a Friday in a party of 7. Wow, the fish fry was fantastic, both the regular and beer batter fried It comes with soup or salad. The French onion soup was great, the New England clam chowder was good and the Manhattan clam chowder was ok. You can get fries, baked potatoes or mac n' cheese (if available). The mac n cheese was ok with the pasta a bit overdone. The service was fantastic. For appetizers the greens were very tasty and not too spicy in an ample portion. Combo had fish, shrimp, and clams which was huge. Fish, great, shrimp good and clams ok. Overall very good food at reasonable prices with great service. It doesn't get better than that. read more

I have eaten at this place several times at both old and new location. It's always been a good place to go for "home cooked" style food with lots of variety on menu. Food usually very good. Tonight had first bad meal there with the special "Texas BBQ pork chops". In one bite I could tell the meat was spoiled. They were very accommodating and took the meal back, offered me alternatives and took my meal off the bill. As my wife said specials can be a mistake when places are getting rid of food that is about to expire. I suspect the pork was at end of shelf life and in my case past expiration and spoiled. I just hope I don't suffer any symptoms of food poisoning tonight. read more

Castlewood Cafe knows how to run a restaurant! From the minute you walk in ,you are seated and a wait person comes to give you menus and water. Fast friendly service! They employ a number of people who clean tables and assist wait staff which helps to make things so efficient! And the food is excellent! I've had everything from meatloaf , fried haddock, to steak and eggs, and never have been disappointed. This is probably the most consistent restaurant in the Utica area and I applaud them for a job well done! I will always be a returning customer here and tip well because they earn it and deserve it!
