Last summer they changed vendors for the machine and since then they seem to break quite a lot, and the repairs take forever. For example, currently the leg machine has been out of order for three weeks. And the cable machine is broken every week. So during busy times I end up wasting 15 to 30 minutes waiting for equipment. In the summertime it can get very stuffy inside because they don't have adequate airflow or fans. I have made multiple suggestions in their suggestion box, but as of now seen no results. I am hoping they will be moved to action after reading this review. I give them one more month and after that, I'm switching to somewhere else.

You're either going to either feel out of place, intimidated, overwhelmed or embrace its grittiness and appreciate the atmosphere. Daro's Extreme Fitness isn't a gym for everyone. It's gritty, it's ugly, its no frills its more for people who just want to get in there, do their work and then get the heck out. Basically, it's a gym for the "hardcore". For the people who want to work out then scram. For the bodybuilders, for the athletes, for the ones who can embrace hard work in an ugly environment. Personally, I don't have a problem with this but if you're someone who needs tanning, towel service, flat screen t.v.'s, Zumba classes, who needs to be accommodated with more "finer things", then this isn't the place for you. Equipment: This place has all the bare essential needs for your weight lifting pump. The machines are great, work well and there's several types of machines for every part of your body. Some of the dumbbells might look rusty and old but they serve their purpose as much as any brand new dumbbells, and personally, I like thay they look like that. In addition to the machines and weights, there's a little fitness bar/jungle gym in the middle of this place for all your body weight exercises. There's a boxing bag and kick boxing bag, and towards the back, there's a pro-wrestling gym. Yes, pro -wrestlers get trained here. Of course there's treadmills, bikes, and all the good stuff for your cardio needs. Facility: Okay, this place is ugly like I mentioned before. There's nothing pretty about this place at all. Its dark, dim, industrial and grimy looking. It looks like they are trying to fix the place up more or they were trying but just put down all the home improvement tools and finished halfway. Its medium sized, so you won't feel cramped and the place doesn't seem to ever get too packed even during the busiest of hours. The locker room is spacious enough to change but my gripe is the bathroom. Like I said, I don't mind the grittiness but the bathroom is ridiculous. Its very small, very cramped and looks all shoddy. The toilet and sink work but the shower has no curtain....So yeah, I don't know how to go about that. The bathroom is good just for one person, its VERY, VERY small. I don't got to the gym for the music but like almost any gym these days, get prepared to hear top 40 crap and if a lot of Dominicans are in the house, they'll pump up some of that crappy bachata-merengue mixes.This is not important to me for I block out the music but if it is to you, bring your headphones, MP3 and own music. There's also a small lounge area if you're waiting for someone, with a pool table. Staff/People: This is one of the things I really enjoyed about the gym. The people who worked here were super nice and made me feel like I was apart of a great group of friends and answered all the questions I asked with no problem. They definitely try to make you feel welcomed and comfortable, so that means a lot to me. And the people who come to this gym seem cool. Yeah, its a "real gym" but no one really tries to be the king of the hill. No ego's here. Pricing: I was able to get information on membership cost before I get to that, if you just want to come in for a day and workout, its 5 dollars, NOT BAD! And if you want to do some pro wrestling training, its 10 dollars. Here's the membership fees (the numbers are the cost). 1 month=$35, 2 months=$60, 3 months=$90, 6 months=$120. There's 2 one year memberships but its goes like this, 1=$75 dollars BUT you have to pay a dollar every time you come to workout instead of 5 dollars a day for if you were to do a walk in. 1 year=249 dollars and covers everything. In essence, if you live in the Bronx and close to the area, and just want to workout somewhere that's not expensive, if you're the type of person that goes to a gym just to workout, then this is the place for you. If you want a tan, spa, towel service, oil body rubs, flat screen t.v. pristine, shiny sparkly place, classes and many more, then this place won't do you justice. Overall, its a good gym, good atmosphere and it can more than get the job done. The women's locker room is adequate, but sometimes overflowing if the summer camp kids are there. Depends on what you want in your "work-out" life. If you want glitzy, you'd have to go to a for-profit place, like Lifetime or Equinox. if you want your workout (and beyond) $$$s to support a human rights-based organization with activities across the world such as advocacy of gender equality and women's empowerment, this is a great place.

The teachers are well trained, very caring and warm. They truly love the children and it shows. My twins love going to "school" everyday. The curriculum is developmentally appropriate and my children have learned so much. I love that the children go outside almost everyday, which I think is very important. I get daily emails that keep my up to date on my children's daily and weekly activities. This daycare feels like a family and I have never once worried about my children while at Rodi. I understand it's because the rent of the new location is higher then the old spot, but I'm not the kind of person who would pay a lot more money for a lot less gym and services. This gym and Gleasons in Brooklyn have been a mainstay of my fathers since he trained and went pro. His name is Angel Torres and was a Golden Gloves winner. Plus my aunt co-owns the place and well, more exposure ain't going to hurt no one. AND I will keep it one hunned with my opinions. Lets get down to some detail: Decor/Atmosphere: Depending on who you are you're going to love or hate it. This gym is by no means pretty. No towel service, no colorful, beautiful, organic fragrances of citrus oil and aromic scents. Its straight up sweat, blood, guts, tears, pain of gain and hardwork and thats what it smells like. There's pictures of boxing greats plastered throughout. The showers work but are dark and dank, the locker rooms arent pretty either. Personally, I prefer these types of gyms. There's two boxing rings, battle ropes, and some extra equipment scattered throughout. Nothing crazy. Very bare bones. A good number of heavy bags too. About 6-8, maybe more. Its not a very big gym either. Pretty small and on top of a Spanish restaurant. Clientele: The demographic of the place is probably more eclectic than you would imagine for the area the gym is in. You have lots of Latino and Black people who are boxing for greatness or just for fun and/or Black and Latino kids who are keeping occupied to stay off the streets. A good number of Albanians. You also have your White collared groups of people who come in for a workout, White people who work in the area, the humble athletes to name a few. Its a good group of people that come here regardless. Since its small, you get to know people a little better and you get to know the regulars. Trainers: A lot of the trainers here are old school and have lots of knowledge and experience. Unfortunately, some of them are also old and out of shape. On the flip side, you have my father who is 52 and in bad ass shape, and still bust younger folks up in sparring. I kid you bot. There's other good trainers but I don't know much about them, so I don't want to false advertise. Location: This gym is in a pretty convenient area. Take the 2/5 train to 149th 3rd ave and walk about 2 blocks down to the gym. From 149th and 3rd Ave, you can be in midtown (West if you take the 2) Manhattan in about 20 minutes. Maybe even 14th street in 20 minutes a little more or less. For instance, The 5 train can get you down to 14th street/east side a lot faster than the two since there's fewer stops. The area is pretty sketchy and not pretty but if you're not there late at night, then there shouldn't be a reason to be deterred. Though its in the South Bronx, its not far from Manhattan and a quick train ride off the 2/5 and even 4. Cost: Its 10 dollars if you want to train and just workout and hit the bag for a day if yoh want personal training and all that, you can hit up the gym. I honestly don't know more than that but I can update later. Misc: If you go, ask for Angel Torres. He is a little bit of a screwy Louey and is flighty and all over the place but be knows his shit when it comes to boxing and he will make you work and push you. -Say hi to my aunt Frances. -This gyms holds lots of events for certain causes Verdict: I give this a 3/5. I love the gritty, bare bones, no non-sense atmosphere but there are some kinks that can be fixed, a little more attention to detail in certain areas. I say stop by if you want some real deal boxing atmosphere. If you want to be pampered and spoiled, I say loom else where. If anything, at least give it a chance and stop by. Feel it out. Thanks.
