I'm gonna be honest, I love the classes, and I love the training. But the toxic masculinity was through the roof. Mind you, some of the coaches are absolute sweethearts and I hate to bundle the good with the bad, but unfortunately this Was my experience. They threw my sneakers in the garbage, another time they hid my gloves and water bottle and did not return it until a month later. I tried not to jump to conclusions, and figured I just miss placed some of my items but after they had returned it to me I was very sure one or two of the instructors had taken my items. A lot of hostility and intimidation was present for absolutely no reason. Wasn't sure if I unintentionally stepped on someones toes. It came to the point were I had to choose to forfeit the lessons as not to have to deal with this type of behavior anymore after a recent injury . Signed up for Kyokushin classes in the city and left this nonsense behind. Nothing more then bullies with a belt. Beware.

Mike Casey is the head coach/owner and an old school Gracie guy.. as real as it gets.. a black belt under Relson Gracie.. super knowledgeable and a great motivator with a no nonsense demeanor. As a beginner I can tell the that the core/fundamental program is awesome.. It is real authentic Gracie Jiu-jitsu.. real combat/ street self defense. The Core program can honestly be done wearing no gi as it is all about real world scenarios, real Gracie style street combat that could save your life. Some schools have gotten away from original Gracie Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and focus entirely on "sport Jiu-jitsu" which has tons of rules and is all about getting points in tournaments.. this is not that school.. although some of the guys do compete.. The blue and higher ranking belts in the school are also very helpful and a great group of guys. Another great thing is that Mike gives you the lesson plan for the whole year, so you know exactly what to expect every class.. The facility is always clean, floor and wall padding always clean, two bathrooms, water fountain etc.. and I always find street parking. The kids program is great for the little ones learning to grapple and is primarily a bully defense program. It is very safe as they are not allowed to do submissions until they reach teenage years and enter the adult program. Overall highly recommended

Tention Championship Karate - As I said, not just about classes. We played Zombie Laser tag (I was the black belt in kills lol). The Owner/Sensei Jadi invited me.

Not sure where to start as this is my first review on Yelp..ever!…read more Many moons ago (lol) just kidding. I did not find this place on Yelp, yet if I was searching Yelp and found it I would never regret it. My cousin introduced me to the Sensei of this school Jadi Tention. One of the best things he could have done for me. Growing up I've always wanted to take self defense / martial arts, yet my mother could not afford it. As I became and adult I figured it was time to follow one of my life's passions and signed up with Tention Championship Karate (TCK). Fast forward - six years later I still train at TCK and for many reasons: He cares about his students (from the children to the adults). He's built his dojo around the development of our future youth. He takes the time to hear the parents and students concerns. He's competed all around the world and still teaches seminars and spars with us as well. He treats everyone as an equal. He really goes far and above the normal martial arts school (and I've been to several prior TCK). Enough rambling! If you're an adult and want to lose weight or learn self defense I recommend training here. If you're a parent with a child that's too hyper, being bullied, or disrespectful, bring them to TCK. I've seen many children become great teens and amazing young adults. Martial arts is more than kicking and punching, it will teach everyone no matter the age; confidence, loyalty, discipline, respect, and humility. Thank you TCK for all you have done.

I've even went to their dojo after work and I waited until their entire training session was over. There was no instructor or anything to talk to regarding to sign up or even learn more about the class. It was quite appalling with the lack of professionalism, I had hope that I would be able to talk with someone regarding classes, fees, and schedules but nothing. Their website info is also outdated too.

I clarifed that my kid has special needs, would they still be able to acomadte us in the classes. I was told and reassured by the lady at the reception that the instructor is great and they would be able to accommodate, "it wouldn't be a problem." It didn't go well the instructor didn't have any patience. The last class we attended, the instructor sent my kid out of the class, in front of the students and parents calling her a, "trouble maker". When I spoke to the instructor about my kid, he told me that he was not aware of my kid having special needs. The lack of communication between staff members was appalling. One of the observations I made, they seem to want to prefer cookie cutter students. Those who aren't don't seem to get the same attention as the others, "it doesn't seems your child wants to be here." Was a comment made to me by the instructor. Most of the time there were 6-8 students with just one instructor. We really wanted to be able to like this dojo and be part of their team. Before moving to the area my kid did attend a different Dojo. Our experience was completely different from here. Improvements that could be made is deffinatley better communications between staff members. If there are more than five students an assistant seems logical. Having an instructor or assistant that has professional experience working with kids. This should be a must!! if there is a class for kids around five years old. Our previous Dojo offered free classes to a local kindergarten teachers assistant in exchange to come and assist in the lessons.
