Mike Casey is the head coach/owner and an old school Gracie guy.. as real as it gets.. a black belt under Relson Gracie.. super knowledgeable and a great motivator with a no nonsense demeanor. As a beginner I can tell the that the core/fundamental program is awesome.. It is real authentic Gracie Jiu-jitsu.. real combat/ street self defense. The Core program can honestly be done wearing no gi as it is all about real world scenarios, real Gracie style street combat that could save your life. Some schools have gotten away from original Gracie Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and focus entirely on "sport Jiu-jitsu" which has tons of rules and is all about getting points in tournaments.. this is not that school.. although some of the guys do compete.. The blue and higher ranking belts in the school are also very helpful and a great group of guys. Another great thing is that Mike gives you the lesson plan for the whole year, so you know exactly what to expect every class.. The facility is always clean, floor and wall padding always clean, two bathrooms, water fountain etc.. and I always find street parking. The kids program is great for the little ones learning to grapple and is primarily a bully defense program. It is very safe as they are not allowed to do submissions until they reach teenage years and enter the adult program. Overall highly recommended

But we’re more than just a gym. We’re a community of passionate individuals committed to growth, discipline, and supporting each other both on and off the mats. In Thai, “Sanuk” is a deeply rooted cultural concept that means "fun" or "enjoyment." But it goes beyond just having a good time , it reflects a way of life. To Thai people, doing something sanuk means doing it in a way that is joyful, engaging, and worthwhile. It implies that life should be lived with a sense of pleasure, laughter, and positive energy, even when doing everyday tasks or hard work. A job, a conversation, or even a challenge should ideally be sanuk , fun, lively, and infused with a good spirit. It’s not just about personal enjoyment either - sanuk often involves others, encouraging social connection, good humor, and shared experiences. It’s a value that helps shape Thailand’s famously warm and welcoming culture. Sanuk Martial Arts is place where people don’t just train hard, they do it with joy, camaraderie, and a love for the art.

So far, we're about halfway through and Rene has been awesome! Our lesson are semi-private (we both take them at the same time) and we both get a great workout as well as good instruction. During our first session, we got there early to fill out some paperwork and discuss with Rene, what it was that we were looking for. We did a good warm-up, went over the punches and got our workout in. We were both sweating like crazy and it felt good. By the end, we decided to incorporate more of a kickboxing routine to our following sessions and it's been amazing. Rene modified some of what he shows us for me due to my diactisis rectii, from my last pregnancy, and he also gave us workout and nutritional tips to try out at home that woudl continue our progress during the days we don't have a session. This is a small neighborhood dojo that has everything you need for a good workout. There is steet parking available and the price is very reasonable compared to other MMA style places that gouge you. I recommend grabbing a friend and committing to a 10 class program with Rene. You definitely won't regret it.

I started at Evolution in the Fall of 2013 with the intentions of joining the fight team. By the Summer of 2014, I had my first fight with Evolution and won unanimous. Prior to becoming a member at Evolution I had a strong background in Karate & Boxing. However, there were a lot of holes in my game that Brandon quickly fixed. He is excellent at translating information, correcting form, providing motivation, and creating a platform for individuals to grow. Not only did I win my first fight under Brandon, but by 2016 I achieved 5 championship belts and a Gold Medal for Team USA. From originally having an awkward style to becoming proficient in Muay Thai - I would say Evolution is an outstanding place to train. Whether you are training to fight, become fit, build confidence, or learn the techniques - YOU will get all of that accomplished here. The amount of work you invest in your training will reflect. I don't have anything negative to say about this gym, but a response to the reviews that are not 5 stars: 1. If it is your FIRST TIME visiting, arrive on time. 2. The gym is usually HOT when it's crowded. As a person who occasionally travels to Thailand for extensive training - I prefer training in warm facilities to prevent injuries and sweat out sodium. 3. Brandon is comical, but just like any trainer - he knows when to be serious. Training is already tough and can be intimidating to newcomers, so it's important to remember to have fun.
