Not surprisingly this is ranked as one of the best Steakhouses in the city. The ribs were absolutely amazing and I've enjoyed ribs all over the southern US too where people line up for hours and swear they are the best in the state. These ribs are tender but not completely fall off the bone. They also have a great balance of spice, salt and sweet while not being over sauced. Sitting at the bar (because we didn't have a reservation) we were able to watch all the grilling in the kitchen. The steaks were also excellent and the portions are American sized. It looked like the steak went from grill to plate to your table in under 10 seconds. No heat lamp here. The wine list is also decent and bottles are priced fairly. The apps - although not needed have a lot of variety and are fresh not fried. Oh, and the staff was very friendly and helpful - they didn't give you the Toronto "you don't have a reservation??" sneer. I'll certainly make Castell the first stop on a return visit to the city and I will remember to make a reservation. read more

Be sure to eat here - deliciousness! We turned up on a Thursday night with no reservation after asking where we could get a good steak close by to our hotel. Castell was in full swing just after 8.30 as we arrived so we were seated as the last two seats at the Bar. Not ideal but with no booking it was appreciated that we could be accommodated. The bar tender was quick, welcoming and had our order taken swiftly. For me the 250g Black Angus Medium rare was an easy decision, but the ribs that were served to another guy sat at the bar looked incredible. You can tell a serious meat place by the size of there steak knives so when handed a kitchen blade and fork it was obvious they meant business. Fabulous steak is all I can say. We've no doubt that we'll be returning especially for those ribs. Menu - Meaty! Drinks - Quick and easy, lovely house Red. Service - Quick, I think we were in and out in just over 30 minutes. Atmosphere - Dark and cosy. Warm. Price - €77 for two. Two steaks, house red and Coke. Overall - 4 stars if you're a meat lover. We were a party of eight for a birthday celebration. The seating offered us was three sofas around a large table. The distance is awkward for conversations and eating although the big straw platters with cloth napkins balanced in our knees worked fine. Most of our party had ribs or mixed platter and everyone agreed they were delicious. The green salad is just the right size. If you like baked potatoes these are moist and flavourful. Service was efficient and friendly. Not a good place for seniors who may have trouble hearing or negotiating the tray balance act. read more

Not impressed. We ordered beer, ribs and salad. Bread and butter was complimentary. The seating was unusual. We were seated at a couch that was about 2 1/2 to 3 feet from the table. We had to get up to reach our drinks and bread and butter. Fine until our trays with ribs came, salad came after. We tried to move the table closer to us and were told to out it back where it was. As a matter of fact, the waitress came over and moved it even further from us. So as far as taking a drink or eating the salads we ordered after our tray if ribs arrived was impossible. This was excellent. I wanted to sit outside or at the bar - no lap food for this lady...bar it was. Though tight, it wasn't uncomfortable (I'm not a small girl). Chatting with the couple next to me from Singapore was a perk. Though he had been a few times, this was his wife's first time. She liked the prime rib more than the spare ribs. How did I not write a review for Castell? My husband and I were visiting in Amsterdam and we had Castell for dinner during our last night. This place is amazing and unique. You sit by a fireplace and there are no tables. They provide trays for you when your food is ready. It was nice and cozy and definitely warm for a chilly day. We ordered steak and ribs and both were delicious! We even had extra that we took for leftovers! The staff is friendly and explained the menu in full. If we're ever back in Amsterdam, we will definitely making a visit to Castell again. read more

Friendly atmosphere at this awesome restaurant in the Leidseplein. Some tables are private, and other tables are large community tables where you sit at comfortable sofas, similar to a living room, with a massive coffee table that everyone shares. The waiter brings a tray that you put on your lap, and you take items from the table and use the tray. The Brasil Fabulouso steak was actually just average, and not worth the price. But ALL the other food and appetizers tasted so good, that I am still giving four stars. I left my phone on the table and waiter chased me down the street to return it. Excellent! We walked in on a Friday night at 7pm without a lot of hope. But the host had a table for us. Though it was right behind in at the entrance of the restaurant. We pushed our luck and asked if we could sit on the couches and he found us a spot. So great service so far. The atmosphere is really unique and cozy. Eating on couches and sitting around a fireplace. Really nice. My husband and I both had the ribs and shared a potato. The ribs were cooked perfectly. Nice and tender. So good!! Came here on the recommendation of a friend who had been here several times. It definitely didn't disappoint! I would definitely recommend getting a reservation because it gets very busy, we didn't have a reservation for a semi big group, but they were willing to accomdate us as well as they could which was wonderful. The staff were all very friendly and fun, and gave us their honest opinions about what to order from the menu, and everything was fantastic! The atmosphere itself was cozy and inviting, as soon as you walk in you see the grill filled with searing meat, yum! I reccomend the ribs, delicious! I was here the other day on a man-date with a girlfriend of mine. I am a huge meat lover and we shared the ribs and their black angus steak and it was absolutely amazing! The staff was super friendly and pointed out that I was cutting my steak the wrong way and that I cutting across the veins makes the meat chewier as opposed to amazingly delicious the other way around. They also let us practice our Dutch with them! I will say to definitely sit at the bar because sitting and eating a steak on a board on your lap looks like it can be uncomfortable. read more

It's on the small side and they do not have tables unless you are sitting at the bar (we did). Don't let this distract you from trying. This was kind of a disappointment. Ate here about 6 months ago. Ribs especially weren't fresh, marinades didn't have much taste and staff definitely weren't friendly either. Usually when the food is good I can handle some arrogance, but this was simply too much in combination with the old meat. So It was our second time at Castell. We knew the rules and I really tried to abide by them but something went horribly wrong. Reservation: check; made this three weeks in advance before our trio to NL. Restaurant: Still in same location. check. We arrived on time but in our tourist cloths so sweaters and boots on a cold February Valentine evening. It was meant to be a special date for my husband and I. We were greeted in a less than enthusiastic waitress who scanned us like items off of a supermarket shelf. We were sat "around" the bar area and waited for our table to be ready for 20minutes during which time we were served delicious canapé's and we ordered drinks. We were then directed to a bar-stool type of seat next to the grill. I adamantly refused to be sat there - i did not travel all the way from another part of Europe to be sat on a bar-stool next to the grill on Valentines day with mu husband! Another 15minutes wait and we were finally sat on a nice corner of the sofa we knew. Between dinner there was suddenly a rush of dinners who were directed to sit around the same safe as we were on. Would you believe the waiter had the audacity to ask us to move and be sat together on one small space to make way for the new group that worried 40 minutes after we had been there? I couldn't believe it. Again I refused to move from my space and at this time, I think i lost my appetite. Food: was delicious as usual. service: total disaster. Travelling alone is sucky at the best of times, and while many people have not enjoyed the seating arrangements, for me, sitting at the bar was a great way to not feel like a loner loser. Bar staff were great. Friendly and happy to run through the menu. Bread with the most divine garlic butter was supplied with the menu. I had snails to start, and Holandés Gaúcho (Dutch fat ass steak) for main. It was a 350g sirloin. I asked for it Medium rare, and it was cooked perfectly with a coating of something herby and spicy that added to the taste without being overbearing. Kerrie sous (Curry sauce) and garlic sauce served on the side. No fries offered. Just baked potato or salad. A pleasant change. I come here when I am traveling alone, sit at the bar, have a few glassesof wine and a fillet. It is like a second home, with friendly and courteous staff and always high quality fresh food.I have never had the ribs, but understand they are very good, and seem to be most popular among the local clientele. Wine list is reasonable, but you may do better with the house wine, which isn't too shabby. Without a doubt one of the best places for singles and small groups. We tried to dine there this evening as the place was highly recommended by a friend who dines here often on business travel. We arrived early around 600 pm the place was fairly empty, and requested a seat at the bar. The gentleman on my right was giving his order and the couple to the left of us were finishing their dinner. We ordered a beer and were each given a small glass of beer that has barely half full. We looked at the menu, made our selection and closed our menu. We waited more than 20 minutes as the barkeep chatted with the elder couple who were preparing to leave. We were not acknowledged with an "I will be with you in a moment", nor were we offered another glass of beer. We paid for the beer 6 euro for one small glass since each was half full, and left. As we left the gentleman who had ordered as I was seated was given his food, and we had not been allowed to place an order, so that gives an idea of how long we waited, and IT WASN'T BUSY The bartender has the distinction of being the only rude, arrogant jerk we have encountered in Amsterdam. read more
