What an alternative restaurant!!! The bbq to-die-for especially the ribs and the steak. You are seated in a lounge style couch and the food is brought on your lap! The huge coffee table is used to place your drinks. Excellent! It will become a staple for me!

After getting lost, we finally found Castell. We had made reservations based on numerous recommendations and glowing reviews. The hostess/waitress led us to a dark room and seated us on a couch. Yes, a couch. We ordered tap water but got (expensive and small) bottled water instead. We were served bread with a garlic butter that was amazingly addictive. The waitress eventually came out with a tray to place on our laps since we weren't at a table. I don't think there are any actual tables there. We shared the "Dutch Fat Ass Steak", which was not really that big. We also shared the spare-ribs, which were pretty good. However, it was not comfortable eating meat off a tray. Cutting is not easy on an unsteady surface. We were offered a side of salad or potato so we ordered 1 of each, but were charged for the salad. I really didn't need it, I just thought it was part of our meal. We had a few scoops of ice cream for dessert. Then we went to bed and were sick all night. Both of us. So obviously something was bad. I can't believe how many people actually like this place.

My time with food has been hit or miss and I usually never ask Concierge advice on where too eat because they usually have relationships with the local restaurants but this time I took the advice and OH BOY!!!! Was this a great choice. Hidden off the path with no signage I came inside and saw a small quint place with people sitting on sofa and bar stools and was a lil baffled until so many people were recommending the ribs while I had a taste for steak. The sever who was so nice said why not both, which I did. Why did they sit me by the grill where I saw the cook, cooking steak, ribs, shrimp and lobster. I said I wouldn't get all four but I did get 3 out of 4 and I have no regrets. Jumbo shrimp appetizer with such a great grilled flavor that you didn't need the sauce that came with it. Now the ribs with that garlic sauce on the side. Totally forgot I had a steak with it. Only one other place in the US compared and that is Houston's, no one else comes close. Meat fell off the bone and and that GARLIC SAUCE. I wanted too pack it up and bring it home. The steak cooked perfectly with a side of veggies was just right. Definitely coming back before I depart tomorrow. 5 stars easyyyyy

Good food! Prepare to eat with a tray on your lap. One of my favorite restaurants in Amsterdam. The food is tasteful and plentiful. Nothing I would add or take away. My one tip is to come hungry.

No, different isn't always better - and you'd think eating a steak in your lap like a tv dinner instead of at a table wouldn't be a better way to do it. Well, it works quite well. And that couch is damn comfy. Top that with an absolutely gorgeous and perfectly cooked sirloin steak, and you are onto something. Oh, and the knives are enormous. And as we all know: when it comes to steak knives, size actually does matter. Of course it does. If there's one thing I don't like about this place, it is that it's in Amsterdam where I don't live. But rest assured I'll be back whenever I'm in town.

Spare ribs! Delish!

OK who would have thought that the best meal I had during my European trip would be a random restaurant in Amsterdam that serves BBQ eaten off a platter right off your lap? Certainly not me! The atmosphere is unlike any other restaurant I've ever been to. If I had to try to explain it, I'd compare it to going to some mountain lodge. There's a cozy fireplace and you just sit there on the couch sipping on a bottle of wine and eating off a platter with meat on it. It was fantastic! The spare ribs I had were tasty, why do I say this? Never have I ever finished an entire rack of baby back ribs to myself. NEVER. I just kept going and then all of a sudden like *POOF* it was all gone. And then I was sad.

Certainly one of the better steak houses in Amsterdam and Wow my steak was amazing, we had a seat right by the bbq so could watch how much care went into cooking each steak, there was true love shown by the chef on each and every item he placed on the grill. The only point I did want to highlight they only have Steam Potatoes or Green beans with your steak, no option for mash potato or fries sadly... I ordered the Brasil Fabuloso 300 gram fillet steak medium rare and it was delightful.... We skipped the dessert but had an amazing red wine with our steak instead.

I usually love sauce with my meat but this steak is so good by itself I kept forgetting to add sauce!

Looooove the steak here!! Perfect every time I've been! The only thing is that it's difficult to reserve as they are booked a long time in advance unless you're lucky, or just come early and sit and the bar (no reservations for there). But even if you have to wait, the steak is very much worth it!

Definitely one of the best steaks I've had although the fillet steak was massive and I couldn't finish it. Should've opted for the 'lady fillet' at 200g and would have been far easier to manage. My boyfriend had the Dutch fat ass steak and at 350g was a beast. He says it's the best steak he's ever had and kept making strange mooing noises whilst eating it! Very disconcerting! Only reason I didn't give five stars was down to a couple of small issues. We called ahead to make a reservation for a Friday night and were told we didn't need to. As soon as we arrived we were asked for our reservation (!) and didn't have one so sat at a bar for a drink. The wait was around 30 minutes and we were reseated at a large sofa with six other diners dotted around. After ordering steak took another 20 minutes to arrive and when it did, we ate it off our laps. Have to say, at 104 euros for two mains three sides and a bottle of wine, it's not cheap but worth every penny. But book first and get a table or a bar seat

Cozy ambiance on sofas around a fireplace, food is served on platers so you eat like in your living room. Quite cool. Big choice of steaks and barbecues, we had mixed grill (pork) and Dutch steak - delicious. Food I would rate 3-4 stars. Service was kind of agressive, unfriendly, she was in a hurry, not giving tips about the food, felt we were bothering her. Rate 1-2 stars.

Best ribs!! Ever! At here the first night left so satisfied! Ran into rib factory the decline night and had a terrible experience. Went back to Castell for the ribs out last night. Inside is super warm and cozy.

Steak special and a beer This was an amazing meal

Average to good steak. But I am not really used to putting the dishes on my lap when eating... There is no dinning table...

Great ambiance, incredible views, and a solid overall experience. Service in Europe is . . . different. Not bad, just not what I'm used to, so I try not to let that impact things too much. One thing I do want to call out: my daughter's friend has a severe allergy to seafood, nuts, and kiwi, and the staff was incredibly attentive and accommodating. That wasn't our experience everywhere in Europe, so it definitely stood out and was appreciated. We went simple with two steaks: the "Mrs. Porter" and a bone-in ribeye. Mrs. Porter needed a little more seasoning, but the ribeye was . Sides? Honestly don't even remember them . . . which probably says enough. The highlight might've been the "Mr. Fox" dessert. They bring out this chocolate fox head, pour liquid nitrogen into it, and crack it open tableside. Super cool presentation. Dessert itself was good, not amazing . . . but I'd order it again just for the show. End of the day: great ambiance, great views, good food, and a fun experience. I'll definitely be back.

As the evening went on it was a windy colder experience. Had the pile of spicy tomatoes for starters. It's a heap of cherry tomatoes cut in half and mixed with spices and green peppers. Hot but refreshing. Has the steak with fries as the main course. It was well cooked but the cut of meat was poor. Came with a large basket of fries. Too much for one person. The selection of wines by the glass is very limited. Had a St Emilion and it was ok. The bar was busy and the service spotty. The dinner was ok but not great.

It's always a challenge to find really great restaurants when traveling in Europe, sometimes you…read moreend up with just okay tourist food, but not the case with De Nachtwacht! So, I had made reservations on Thursday evening, but our plans changed and we had to cancel. We tried again the next night, but had to pay a non-cancel "deposit" of 10 euros each for our party of five, 50 euro. But we were sure we could make it and booked. Now if you're thinking that the deposit was charged due to our prior cancellation, it's not the case since another person in our party booked the second reservation. It was well worth the deposit! Firstly, the location is in the Rembrandt area and very nice and active area. We were seated just inside the restaurant, with a very comfortable table, seats and window. The ambiance is great with popular music playing and a very bustling staff that is very attentive, friendly and helpful. The menu is vast and includes a lot of great options including French favorites such as frog legs and snails. We started with an adventurous order of the frog legs and they were amazingly good and the sauce was amazing! We ordered a bit of family style including the Cote Beouf, French onion soup, baked potato, fries, vegetables, chicken, ribeye. It was the perfect amount for the five of us and left room for dessert, which we ordered as a brownie and we asked for a custom dessert of ofogato, or ice cream with espresso poured over, an Italian favorite of mine! The price is reasonable and can highly recommend!

Since we came pretty late, none of the appetizers were available and only steaks. Which was fine for me, since I didn't want to waste any valuable calories on anything but steak. Ordered a massive Côte de Beouf (800 grams or 28 ounces) and some Grilled Vegetables on the side. This was an extremely well-cooked steak! European medium rare borders closer to rare than medium, which is fine for me as long as the steak is cooked well. Quite tasty! Service was fine, no complaints from me. Honestly can't believe I've never been to De Nachtwacht before. Definitely need to come back.

It's a nice little place, you can sit in the front of the restaurant where the chefs are cooking or the back dining room, away from the outer doors. We opted for the front, it was neat to watch them cut and cook our meat. We went with the Wagyu carpaccio, scallops, and tuna tartare as the appetizers. These were all absolutely incredible. So fresh tasting, made to perfection. The right amount of flavor. Next we ordered the tomahawk. We didn't realize until after we were eating that it was bison. It was so fantastic, I'm actually glad we didn't know because neither myself or husband had ever tried it before so it gave us the chance to try something new that we may not have ordered. It was cooked perfectly for us. The right amount of pink. It was so tender to chew and in my opinion the right about of fat on the cut. The lobster was great, it had the right amount of butter than a slight hint of lemon, not overpowering. The breads were good but the butters stood out, absolutely heavenly. So creamy and flavorful. I am going to dream about this when we leave. The broccoli/cauliflower and mushrooms were just ok to us, nothing gave us a wow on them. Overall the meal was fantastic. My husband said it was the best meal in his life. Our server was very kind and attentive. The chef and owner were also exceptional. Everyone made us feel very welcomed and taken care of. We never felt like we were being overlooked or ignored. We would recommend this place if you're looking for a great meal and service and not a bad price tag. For the quality of food, the price is on par with that and worth it all.
