Four people ended up not being able to make it, and our party of 10 was seated together. The server was quite friendly and took drink orders immediately upon us being seated. He put those in while we looked at the menu. He answered questions about the menu and offered to refill our drinks. The spare ribs were excellent. The meat fell off the bone. I chose Castell based on the great reviews, and that my friend has never tried authentic Argentine parilla (grilled meats) before. Upon arrival, the host asked if we had made a reservation. Not knowing this was required, we were initially pleased that he agreed to accommodate our party of three. Then, things changed once we were seated. As we were looking over the menu to decide what to eat, I started coughing due to a "throat tickle." When I took a sip of water from the bottle I had been carrying with me, a different employee told me that I couldn't drink from my water bottle in the restaurant. When I explained why, he continued to make his point. A waitress came to take our food order, but seemed unhappy with our choices. Noticing this, when she returned to take our beverage order, we decided on only water instead of the wine we had originally planned to order. Throughout the rest of our time at Castell, my friend noticed that this waitress repeatedly gave me looks of disapproval. The food was the only good part of our experience, and I would give it alone 5 stars. There is a traditional fire grill on which the meats are prepared. The filet mignon and lamb chops were perfectly seasoned and delicious! Unfortunately, the rest of the experience was uncomfortable and unpleasant. Our waitress gave me an annoyed look when I requested the check. My friend and I split the payment. As she was paying, the waitress mentioned the "skip the tip" option, so my friend obliged her. I went ahead and paid a tip as I felt her problem was more about her than me. Went with two coworkers and we all agreed this place has the best ribs we've had in Amsterdam! Fall off the bone tender and came with two sauces which aren't really needed. Superb! Friendly bartender recommended a great red wine which paired perfectly with the ribs. Pairing like that is a skill I wish I had. Dimly lit, nice atmosphere. Made reservations for dinner at Castell. If you do not have a reservation, I have found that the earliest they could seat you is 9pm. They have a 2-hour stay limit. When my colleague and I arrived, they check our coats and there is a no hat policy. The restaurant has a warm and cozy atmosphere. The wait staff is nice and friendly. We were seated on a bench around a fireplace with no table, along with other patrons. You eat with a tray on your lap. The menu is simple - a variety of appetizers, couple of soups, a section for fish, and a section for steak and spare ribs. They also had a wine menu. We both ordered the spare ribs - him with a side of potato and me with a side of vegetables. The food arrived pretty quickly. The portions were large. The spare ribs were nicely sauced, fall off the bones tender, and absolutely delicious. The potatoes and vegetables tasted just as good. Prices were very reasonable. After getting lost, we finally found Castell. We had made reservations based on numerous recommendations and glowing reviews. The hostess/waitress led us to a dark room and seated us on a couch. Yes, a couch. We ordered tap water but got (expensive and small) bottled water instead. We were served bread with a garlic butter that was amazingly addictive. The waitress eventually came out with a tray to place on our laps since we weren't at a table. I don't think there are any actual tables there. We shared the "Dutch Fat Ass Steak", which was not really that big. We also shared the spare-ribs, which were pretty good. However, it was not comfortable eating meat off a tray. Cutting is not easy on an unsteady surface. We were offered a side of salad or potato so we ordered 1 of each, but were charged for the salad. I really didn't need it, I just thought it was part of our meal. We had a few scoops of ice cream for dessert. Then we went to bed and were sick all night. Both of us. So obviously something was bad. My time with food has been hit or miss and I usually never ask Concierge advice on where too eat because they usually have relationships with the local restaurants but this time I took the advice and OH BOY!!!! Was this a great choice. Hidden off the path with no signage I came inside and saw a small quint place with people sitting on sofa and bar stools and was a lil baffled until so many people were recommending the ribs while I had a taste for steak. The sever who was so nice said why not both, which I did. Why did they sit me by the grill where I saw the cook, cooking steak, ribs, shrimp and lobster. I said I wouldn't get all four but I did get 3 out of 4 and I have no regrets. Jumbo shrimp appetizer with such a great grilled flavor that you didn't need the sauce that came with it. Now the ribs with that garlic sauce on the side. Totally forgot I had a steak with it. Only one other place in the US compared and that is Houston's, no one else comes close. Meat fell off the bone and and that GARLIC SAUCE. I wanted too pack it up and bring it home. The steak cooked perfectly with a side of veggies was just right. The atmosphere inside is nice, dark, but with some cool art pieces on the wall, overall it feels a bit like a cellar. The setup is odd and the menu is strangely organized. Don't be fooled, they offer wines by the glass even if the menu doesn't say so. We learned this because I wanted beer and she wanted wine, luckily we were able to get what we wanted. Definitely one of the best steaks I've had although the fillet steak was massive and I couldn't finish it. Should've opted for the 'lady fillet' at 200g and would have been far easier to manage. My boyfriend had the Dutch fat ass steak and at 350g was a beast. He says it's the best steak he's ever had and kept making strange mooing noises whilst eating it! Very disconcerting! Only reason I didn't give five stars was down to a couple of small issues. We called ahead to make a reservation for a Friday night and were told we didn't need to. As soon as we arrived we were asked for our reservation (!) and didn't have one so sat at a bar for a drink. The wait was around 30 minutes and we were reseated at a large sofa with six other diners dotted around. After ordering steak took another 20 minutes to arrive and when it did, we ate it off our laps. We arrived early, like 15 minutes before our reservation, staff was very friendly and immediately they ask us to sit in the bar, we ordered a couple of drinks until they prepare our cozy corner. Once on our cozy corner the staff was coming and going every 5 minutes asking us t if we need more drinks and if we are ready to order. (We were a group of 10 people, so you can imagine not very easy to organize everyone: P ). So finally we managed to order. 20 Minutes later the food arrived, OMG amazing presentation and the steak looked super good. Yeap, it was super tasty. This is one of my all time favourite restaurants. Everything bar the salads is cooked on a barbecue. If you don't like ribs, come here, your life will be changed, the same can be said of the prime rib. An ideal trip to Castell would be an early evening visit with a vegetarian friend. Order the ribs for them and the prime rib for yourself, then eat them both. Your friend can wolf down the baked potato and rabbit away through your salad. This is undoubtedly some of the best flesh of animal corpse I have ever consumed. I have spent a lot of time in Amsterdam on assignments and have eaten here a dozen or so times, it is probably my favourite restaurant. It has a very relaxed lounge where you eat at an enormous communal coffee table, a few regular tables a bar and even a boat on which you can consume the carnivorous loveliness they purvey. I cannot sing it's praises highly enough. If you spend any time in 'dam go to Gaucho on Leidseplein for a benchmark meal then come here and find out what a dead cow on a fire really tastes like. read more

Still the waiter seated us at a small table for 2, during dinner we had to place the wine bottle and water on the floor. No tap water available. 1 of 3 steaks was not cooked to point. Hence, the person was served inly the side. Unfortunately, the side (backed potato) was almost cold. The waiter, who was always friendly, replaced the side. Another side, a salad, had to be odered a 2nd time. The delayed steak was then rare instead of medium. Side salads had not enough and too much dressing. For the inconviniences 3 coffees were offered. Pros on the food, cons on sitting arrangement. It's a really cozy and relaxed atmosphere. We sat by the fireplace and it was sooo lovely. Our waiter was nice and friendly. We were some of the first people there and were served quickly enough, though as the place got busier it became nearly impossible to get the waiter's attention as it looks like the waiters also serve as bartenders. But the food, which was good, is served on your lap, which is kind of cool but also awkward because you have to bend over your food while balancing it to get to your drink across the way. Also, you're sitting on a U couch so if people in the inside want to get out they have to walk right next to your food to get out. Ladies watch out for the placemats as they might get caught on your stockings or other delicate clothing. The place seems to have been designed for big men with large laps and long arms :) read more

Recommended to us by some locals, my friend and I decided to come here for a late dinner on a Sunday evening. I have to admit, at first I was a little disappointed by the way we were treated. We asked if there was any seating available and the host quickly said no. I am thinking this is because we were not Dutch. However, I asked the bartender about the same two open seats at the bar and he said we could sit (I asked and not my Aussie mate, perhaps he was the issue?). The restaurant was quite alive and bustling, service was attentive and our food was served quickly. I had the lamb chops, which I basically inhaled. They were quite delicious, especially as far as Dutch food is concerned (sorry, but you guys are not well-known for your cuisine!). The escargot came out in the shell which was a visual delight but the flavor was underwhelming. Not as buttery and flavorful as expected. I ordered the veal steak and pork ribs. While the veal steak was slightly overcooked, the ribs were pretty good (fall off the bone). Even worse there was only one beer on tap. I skipped out on dessert but my coworkers said the ice cream was amazing. Service - 2 stars. Our server seemed pretty arrogant and even after my co-worker adamantly told him he did not want a beer the server brought one anyway. I know we were probably the youngest guests, he treated us as if we were boys on the streets. It wasn't a busy night but service was horribly slow. Not surprisingly this is ranked as one of the best Steakhouses in the city. The ribs were absolutely amazing and I've enjoyed ribs all over the southern US too where people line up for hours and swear they are the best in the state. These ribs are tender but not completely fall off the bone. They also have a great balance of spice, salt and sweet while not being over sauced. Sitting at the bar (because we didn't have a reservation) we were able to watch all the grilling in the kitchen. The steaks were also excellent and the portions are American sized. It looked like the steak went from grill to plate to your table in under 10 seconds. No heat lamp here. The wine list is also decent and bottles are priced fairly. The apps - although not needed have a lot of variety and are fresh not fried. Oh, and the staff was very friendly and helpful - they didn't give you the Toronto "you don't have a reservation??" sneer. I'll certainly make Castell the first stop on a return visit to the city and I will remember to make a reservation. read more

Be sure to eat here - deliciousness! We turned up on a Thursday night with no reservation after asking where we could get a good steak close by to our hotel. Castell was in full swing just after 8.30 as we arrived so we were seated as the last two seats at the Bar. Not ideal but with no booking it was appreciated that we could be accommodated. The bar tender was quick, welcoming and had our order taken swiftly. For me the 250g Black Angus Medium rare was an easy decision, but the ribs that were served to another guy sat at the bar looked incredible. You can tell a serious meat place by the size of there steak knives so when handed a kitchen blade and fork it was obvious they meant business. Fabulous steak is all I can say. We've no doubt that we'll be returning especially for those ribs. Menu - Meaty! Drinks - Quick and easy, lovely house Red. Service - Quick, I think we were in and out in just over 30 minutes. Atmosphere - Dark and cosy. Warm. Price - €77 for two. Two steaks, house red and Coke. Overall - 4 stars if you're a meat lover.
