I'll start by saying . . . I'm a little spoiled living in a city with elite food and service, so I always factor that in when I travel. Mr. Porter is a vibe. Great ambiance, incredible views, and a solid overall experience. Service in Europe is . . . different. Not bad, just not what I'm used to, so I try not to let that impact things too much. One thing I do want to call out: my daughter's friend has a severe allergy to seafood, nuts, and kiwi, and the staff was incredibly attentive and accommodating. That wasn't our experience everywhere in Europe, so it definitely stood out and was appreciated. We went simple with two steaks: the "Mrs. Porter" and a bone-in ribeye. Mrs. Porter needed a little more seasoning, but the ribeye was . Sides? Honestly don't even remember them . . . which probably says enough. The highlight might've been the "Mr. Fox" dessert. They bring out this chocolate fox head, pour liquid nitrogen into it, and crack it open tableside. Super cool presentation. Dessert itself was good, not amazing . . . but I'd order it again just for the show. End of the day: great ambiance, great views, good food, and a fun experience. I'll definitely be back. read more

Went for drinks only while waiting to check into our room. The views are decent and the servers and bartender were very nice. The drink prices on the other hand are outrageous. 36 euro for the smallest martini I've ever had. Don't get me wrong, it tasted great, but still. A very solid steakhouse located in the W Amsterdam Hotel. We stayed at the hotel during the first leg of our trip and figured MR PORTER would be a great first night meal because of jet lag. The restaurant is very nice with a solid wine list with meat and fish entrees. We sat at the Chef's Table which I would highly recommend to watch the team in action. They are also very interactive and are more than happy to answer any questions and let you know what they are preparing. We started with the Jamon De Bellota Iberico. It was solid, but nothing like the Iberico we had last year in Barcelona. It's not their fault since it's so difficult to compete with Spain on this dish. We also split the Bone in Ribeye which was quite good, cooked and spiced perfectly. We always like to treat ourselves to a steakhouse when we travel, but it's getting more and more difficult to pay steakhouse prices. I have basically mastered steak on my BGE, but going to a steakhouse is still such a treat. Would I go again, absolutely, but there are so many great options in Amsterdam. read more

Very disappointed overall. We ordered two cuts of steak and both were flavorless. The steak knives were dull and service was also very poor. One person I was with ordered a martini, it was given to them half empty. When we brought it to the waiters attention he accused us of drinking half. We are ordering $100+ cuts of steak we don't need to false claim any drinks. If this wasn't in the W they probably wouldn't be in business. read more

Mr Porter, Spuistraat 175 within the W Hotel,, was on our shortlist for our recent trip to Amsterdam. Colleagues had mentioned the spectacular view of the city, located right behind the Royal Palace (Koninklijk Paleis Amsterdam). The menu was also intriguing - if we can couple its modern cuisine with its spectacular views at sunset - we think we got our culinary haven for the night. The restaurant and lounge are both on the roof - and, indeed, have spectacular views of Amsterdam - primarily north, west, and south. To its east is a likewise spectacular view of the Royal Palace, with views of its grand facade. The view, coupled with a very modern, glass and steel look. The restaurant is open - with views extending from one end through the kitchen and the city's landscape beyond. We believe it may be one of the few rooftop restaurant/lounges in the city. Reservations are required; you should do it a few days in advance. [Be aware that some restaurants in the city do require a reservation and a deposit, similar to Los Angeles or New York.] We noted a lot of formal business attire, but we don't think it was necessarily required (the lounge was much more informal, and there was cross-over between the two). We sat at the bar, which was preferable -it had a great view of the entire restaurant, with the patio literally behind us. Our bartender servers were quite friendly. We started with two cocktails - the Citric Habit and the Basilieus. Cocktails were made carefully and as expected for a restaurant of this caliber. To start us off, they provided a bread service - a buttery Naan with a side of olive oil and aromatics...warm and unctuous. After some study, we ordered the Taboon Roasted Foie Gras and the Roasted Aubergine Grated Egg for starters. The latter was already on my shortlist before our visit. The aubergine with grated egg was salty and tart and a nice refreshing way to start the meal, cleansing the sugars from the drinks. The foie gras was one-of-kind, at least by us - it was prepared perfectly, lightly warm, soft as a pillow. We can still taste the sauce; it added a cloying sweetness - amazing. Speaking with our server, we asked that he help us decide - we had just come off two days of red meat and looking for a change of pace with fish. He had us go for the Sea Bream Spicy Tomato Casserole, but then go for the Taboon Roasted Sea Bass in Adobo Sauce - this avoided the other fish entree with a similar tomato base. Like the Foie Gras, the Sea Bass was similarly prepared in a giant clay oven - we suspect the high heat and wood fire add the flavor. Quite amazing and perfect for our mood. The Sea Bream was similarly delicious, perfectly prepared - soft and well suited for the intense flavor of the tomato. With our entrees, we ordered their Mac & Cheese with Cauliflower - this came out piping hot in a small cast iron pot. Throughout the dinner, we made sure to explore the patio and the floor - before we lost the sun. We got gobs of one-of-a-kind shots of the city and of the Royal Palace. When night came, we did more of the same - breathtaking! Now - one surprise. When we were wrapping up dinner, we asked for some containers to take back to the hotel. They apologized and said that they don't do that. I don't think I've ever heard of that, but when in Rome...luckily, we were nearly done. But, it put a crimp in getting dessert. We watched other parties and wondered what they would do if they had ordered a full bone-in tomahawk. Sneak it out in your jacket? Keine problem as we say in Germany - all in all, a wonderful meal in a stylish backdrop that can't be beaten. We booked this on a recommendation from our hotel for christmas eve dinner. Since it was a holiday and we had booked the required prix fixe dinner, our server approached us without introducing herself and asked to start dinner service without inquiring about drinks. She also failed to ask about how we would like our steak prepared. The food was oversalted and the steak was extremely rare. We had to send back the ribs which were so oversalted that they were inedible. When I asked why we had not had the option to choose how the steak was prepared, our server admitted her error and did provide some compensation for her mistake. Overall, the food was salty and overpriced, the service felt rushed and, frankly, incompetent for a high end steakhouse. The hostess was snooty and acted annoyed and the overall experience was extremely disappointing. I would never dine here again and, if you are a foodie, this is a restaurant you should avoid. read more

I recently dined at Mr Porter and had a mixed experience. Despite making reservations, we were initially seated at a cocktail table, which I had overlooked. The loud music made it nearly impossible to converse. On a positive note, the first course, a salad, was fantastic. However, the main course was a disappointment. We waited an hour and a half between our salads and our steaks, which arrived rare, still mooing , instead of medium as requested. Very rood host made us wait for an hour beyond our reservation time, then food (two steaks) took another hour and a half to serve. The meat was chewy and well undercooked. I am not a huge fan of hotel breakfasts unless they are free. This one definitely wasn't. I mean the person who checked me into my room even told me that as good as the breakfast is I'd probably want to get it somewhere else for a better price. And I did have some great breakfasts while in Amsterdam. However... I was running super late on my last day and needed a quick bite before running (literally) to the train to the airport. I wanted to get some pictures from the roof of my hotel so I decided to have breakfast here. WOW! Probably the best breakfast buffet I've had for less than 50 bucks. It was 35 Euro which is quite pricey but you get a lot for that. There is a buffet and you can choose from a warm dish that they will make for you. The buffet has the standard fare of croissant, danish, cereal, juices but they also have champagne and house cured chicken pastrami. The labneh cheese was great! If I weren't worried about making it home I would have probably sloshed it up with mimosas all morning. I would definitely come back and even come in later to try lunch or dinner. read more

WORST restaurant in the WORLD.... Only has 4 Stars because of the free breakfasts. If you take out the breakfasts, it would have 1-2 stars. First service is HORRIBLE. This was my second visit to Mr Porter , this time i was with my wife for our honeymoon and we stayed at the W and got a reservation for the resturant as i spoke so highly of it from the first time i had visited, but i couldn't have been more wrong as right off the bat one could notice the service had gone way down with unconcerned staff and delays in service , the highlight was when our steak came out and was comepletly cold , i expressed this to our server who took the steak in the kitchen to have the "Manager " ( Tom, not his real name ) touch and inspect it . Tommy surprise The server came back to me to tell me that the manager thought the steak was fine and all they could do was warm it up for me ( i had ordered 5 different sides that were great ) , i expressed that the steak was cold and warming it up in anyway would change the temp i wanted it at . Tom ( not his real name ) comes to me and says the " steak is fine and we can only warm it and he himself inspected it , i asked him how this was good hospitality and if he did touch it to inspect it how could he give me the same steak to which he became very rude and defensive and started stating how the real manager was not there and he was left incharge and they were very busy . I politely asked to pls be billed for my sides and drinks and i wanted to leave and he started arguing with me saying i was being unfair to him and that he had been working 6 days straight ( not my problem , i came to celebrate honeymoon and convinced my wife to choose this for our dinner ) . Located in the W hotel on the top floor provides a great view in what is generally low-rise Amsterdam. This is basically a steak joint and apparent night club combo ( hard to achieve when it is day light at 10:30 PM and most places close shortly after midnight). Very Stylish, and GREAT music. Good steak, great bread and excellent service. One strange thing was that we ordered an expensive steak for 3/4 and did not finish it. So the we asked for a doggie bag they said they do not do that. Had breakfast at Mr. Porter twice while staying at the W. The breakfast spread is designed perfectly for business travelers. There's a buffet of juices, yogurt, and granola on one end of the restaurant and another buffet of huge variety of foods - fruit, cauliflower, zucchini, grape leaves, string beans, labneh, spanakopita, roasted peppers, cheeses, meats, breads, smoked salmon. All of this is included in your breakfast along with an entree on their menu. For my entree I ordered poached eggs on avocado toast one day and scrambled eggs with sausage the next day. I'm glad we went, it's very trendy, and a place to be seen, but if you're looking for a place to do a nice dinner, keep looking. There have to be better places. The first thing I remember is how I didn't like their booths, I was so uncomfortable sitting there. We got pan fried baby squid and the mrs. porter to split the presentation was marvelous. They cut the steak into strips when serving. Another thing I didn't like about Amsterdam in general is they didn't ever ask if you wanted tap water. So we spent 15 dollars on just water here! Maybe I'm crazy but going from America and getting water for free and coming to another country who supposedly has some of the cleanest tap water you'd think they'd be serving that. Worst decision made on our trip to eat at this restaurant. Service is extremely bad and steaks are not worth the price. We had the bone in NY Strip for 80,00 and tasted like a cheap piece of meat. The lighting is very hard see which covers up the disgusting food. Manager even came around and had an education of a teenager but managing a hotel restaurant. I only went here for drinks on the terrace so I will review again once I've had food here. This place is great for an afterwork date night drink or with colleagues. There is a lovely outside seating area with a fantastic view of Dam square and is a great place to watch the sunset; I can imagine a sunrise swim in the pool is also absolutely fantastic and, I checked, the pool is heated. There is a lovely interior and fireplace inside and the bar staff are friendly and welcoming which is nice given the glossy finish of this bar, this was a pleasant notable thing. I much preferred this to the Skylounge for service, ambience and much more. The Gin Cocktail (the Alchemist) I had also seemed good value for money in the total package as was generous. Tables are way too small for shared dining using small portions on monstrous plates. Music is so loud that you cannot hear each other and waiter apologizes when yelling his favorite dishes at you.
