Lunch for four, and none of us had ever eaten at Castaneda's before. We selected the restaurant because if was about half way between our homes ... and it was a very pleasant surprise! My wife and I spent close to twenty years living in Tucson, AZ, eating borderland Mexican food, and based on our experience, Castaneda's is the real deal. It doesn't get a lot better. Lots of parking in the rear. Double check the address. The apparently moved without changing the address on Yelp. The current address is 223 Main Street in Denver, PA ... a short walk from the old address, across the street and across the railroad tracks from the old location. Very nice little locally owned Mexican restaurant. There's only about 6 tables in the restaurant. When you come in, you seat yourself. Immediately you are greeted by a waitress and given homemade chips and salsa along with utensils and a menu (unless you get it when you sit down since it's near the door). The menu had a lot of options but tonight since it was our first time here we tried just shrimp and beef tacos with a side of rice and beans. The difference in taste between a place like this and a chain restaurant is evident, I actually prefer this food better. It was less salty. No complaints with the food. I only took a star away because I would like to go back and try more food here. They also have ice cream and I think fried ice cream (it was in a foil ball I saw in the freezer). The only thing I will say is that if you park here, be careful backing out if you park on the one side because it's easy to miss where the parking lot ends and back your car up into the railroad tracks and get stuck. I noticed this on my way out tonight, which is super hazardous. read more

As soon as we were seated, they served us chips and salsa. I asked our server to give me her face dish and she brought me a choripollo (chorizo and chicken) dish served in a stone bowl with grilled veggies and cheese. As I put this into my tortilla and took my first bite, I understood why this was her favorite dish. Full of flavor and just a joy to eat. My wife really enjoyed her burrito and my son really liked his chicken fajitas. This place is worth the trip. You'll love it. read more

Cute little town but huge on the flavor!!! We ate a huge early lunch today but got hungry for dinner. Mexican sounded good. Castanedas is legit! First you get complementary chips with their delicious salsa!! A smooth salsa with a bit of a peppery bite. It's not hot at all.... It's delicious!! I love enchiladas verde!! They had a special today- enchiladas suizas. I got the chicken. It came smothered in a tomatillo sauce that makes your mouth water!!! I ate so many chips because the salsa was so good that I was only able to eat a small portion of my enchiladas!! No worries they are coming home with me!!! My GF ordered chicken fajitas. They came out sizzling on the platter!! The portions were huge!! We both left with enough for another meal!! The service was good... young kids but they were polite. It was a gorgeous evening so we sat outside in the courtyard. Perfect experience and end to the evening!!! Definitely give them a try!!! I'd been wanting to try them for a while, so when one of those "get $20 of food for $10" online deals popped up, I bought a voucher and went. We got basically three items, and two of them were quite good. I made mistakes ordering, as I could not seem to use my voucher or choose to pay on pickup from the online menu, so I had to call in and that made me make some mistakes. They had a new item I have been wanting to try forever -- Birria Tacos. The meat for these is a stewed beef in a flavorful broth and was absolutely delicious. We took the food home to eat, so the 25-minute drive made them less fresh, and I'm sure they were even better when they were first made. I'd go there again for these. Could have used a little bit more extra broth for dipping (they gave some, just wish it was more). Item 2 was Steak Nachos. I wanted Beef, not Steak, actually, but I screwed up. I didn't think it came with Sour Cream either (menu did not list it), and I didn't order it without. Still, these were also very good, though I'd have liked a bit more lettuce and tomato on them. It's hard to balance nachos tho without ending up with a soggy mess, so they still did well. The third item was Steak Fajitas. I was supposed to order chicken, but I messed up here too. Unfortunately, the Steak here had a fair amount of gristle to it, and it was kinda lacking in the cooked onions department. The only one of the 3 items we were really disappointed with. They also gave us sides of chips and rice which were all good. Prices are pretty reasonable, too. I'd definitely grab take-out from here again. read more

My recent experience: The food was served quickly and was luke warm. I like like warm food so it didn't bother me. The server was very good. The food tasted very good, however shortly after the meal I had indigestion so I stopped at CVS for liquid anti acid. I though I had simply over ate. The next morning I had lower intestinal pain and several bouts to the restroom. I would not post this review if this only happened to me, but the person that accompanied me experienced the exact same symptoms as me. It could have been limited to only us but it was worth a post. read more

The staff is friendly and the food is quickly made. There's some things in the menu that are better than others, in my family's opinion. The Comal, elotes, and steak quesadillas are always delicious. The beef used for nachos (and possibly other menu items) always tastes a little off. Not insinuating that it's spoiled, just different. All-in-all, it's a solid spot to grab dinner to go. read more

Traveling through we placed a takeout order strictly based off reviews. They did not disappoint! I was nervous the order wouldn't be correct because of what i felt may be a language gap, and or they may have assumed i knew their menu. However, i was wrong. Our order was perfect. The restaurant was closed. I was served from a food booth outside of the restaurant. I ordered a shrimp dish for which I paid $20.00, I waited for my change but was ignored. I received a large amount of Rojas sauce with bits of shrimp and veggies. The sauce was sour, the shrimp were like bullets although few and far between and the veggies tasted old. I was completely flabbergasted. No rice, no beans, no sour cream. No change. I haven't gone back. I tell others about my sad experience. BEWARE the so called Mexican restaurant. They don't know true Mexican food. I lived in California for 18 months and the Mexican food there was impeccable. Castanedas doesn't offer a shredded beef burrito. They use ground beef. Excellent Mexican in scenic downtown Denver! Menu has all the staples you'd expect, but nothing exotic. Chips and salsa are spot on- thick salsa- and our dinners- tacos al pastor, steak tacos for the kids, and an enchiladas verde- were fantastic. Service was friendly, glasses were kept full, and portions were decent. Owner is quite gregarious, moving about the patrons and chatting it up. Prices were all in the $10 or less range for our selections. Great addition to northern Lanco, one which will now rival the previously uncontested La Borimex. Stopped here for lunch on our way to the Poconos back in January for a quick lunch and we'll definitely be back. I got the Pastor Tacos (what a steal $6.99 for 3 tacos) and they were absolutely delicious & the flavor was spot on. Hubby got the chicken Burrito which came with rice & refried beans and he thoroughly enjoyed it, he rarely finishes his burritos but he simply couldn't stop eating this one, I never even got a bite. They start you out with chips & salsa - thin crispy tortilla chips accompanied by an authentic tomato based salsa with chunks of tomato, onion & cilantro. Authentic flavors! The tamales were tasty and moist, the enchiladas rojas had a delicious sauce that really completed the dish. Everything else we had was recomendable, but I would pass next time on the burrito, it was only filled with chicken, and go for another order of enchiladas. To be clear, I've never been to the brick and mortar restaurant! I've eaten from their food truck twice and have loved it both times! I've had the fluffy taco and the walking taco! Ok, usually a place with only 2 reviews...and both 5 star...doesn't turn out to be so great. Well, Castaneda's now has 3 - 5star reviews! Stopped in for lunch with my family at 1:30pm on a Saturday was greeted by a smiling super friendly waitress (owner?) and sat to review the menu. Pretty typical Mexican restaurant fare except for a few less common items (like molcajete and a dish called choripollo for 'chorizo and pollo'). We tried a variety of items: Guacamole: served in a molcajete (stone dish)...fresh and delicious Tacos (4 varieties)...all delicious Enchiladas verde: delicious Vegetarian burrito: really delicious Choripollo: served mixed up with onions in a cheese sauce, rice and beans and with tortillas to make your own little 'tacos'...also delicious. Then, we shared the flan (at the recommendation of our perfectly attentive server) Holy crap is it good! Homemade and amazing. All of that for $61 with a few sodas? Yes please! Apparently there is an original Castenedas in Robesonia and this is #2 and only opened 3 months ago. Lucky you Denver, wish we had one where we live! read more

Ok. Here's the scoop. Being Mexican and finding actual Mexican reataurants that serve authentic food can be quite the Adventure, living in Lancaster County, Pa. I heard about Castaneda's through a co-worker, I'd some how missed seeing this lil' place although it's just down the road from my work. O.o I decided to give 'em a try. And I can say this place is nice. The tamales were a lil' dry, could've used more sauce on the chicken, but the taste and amount of filling is spot on. Very delicious. The burrito platter was a lil' bit of a let down... I grew up in Southern California and most places there use the "Giant size" tortilla for burritos, so you get a nice BIG, plump, fat burrito. What I got here was a regular size four tortilla burrito... disappointing. Not much in it... just seasoned steak.. I don't know if maybe I should've asked more question, just assuming the burrito would have beans, guac', pico de gallo in it was my bad. Again, born & raised in So. Cal You just assume you'll get burritos with all the fixins'. The steak meat was very well seasoned, so that was great. Not bland at all. When I went to pick up my order (I got take out, wasn't dine in) the cashier was nice, but it was odd that her co worker was sitting there next to her behind the counter, looking bored, thumbing thru his phone and saying how he wants to leave and something about having a date o.0 All in all the taste is great, portions are not what I expected, especially for the price. Should've taken pictures, but was honestly too tired and hungry when I got home and just wanted to eat dinner and get on with my night. Haha. Give this place a try though. Being totally honest, they literally have the best guacamole around. It's even better than Plaza Azteca! And you get almost as much for only $6!!!!
