Service was outstanding and the food amazing! As with all steak places we did not think the ribeye was prime (but probably choice) but it was still cooked perfectly and the peppercorn sauce was delicious. We had the black olive tapenade with crostini and the pea ravioli. It had a kiss of mint in the filling and a light butter sauce with micro greens sprinkled on top. I would have eaten 2 of those plates! We got the potato gratin instead of the pomme frites with our rib eye. It was all delicious. The waiter recommended some red wine and it too was delicious! Can't say enough about how great this place is. It was pricey-$200 with 3 glasses of wine. But I would definitely go back. Just go! read more

Yes. I realize my reviews are either 1 or 5 stars. My friends tease me about this fact. But I'm a passionate person. It's either a rocket ship or a rusted tub in backwater. No in between. Eating out is expensive. I'd rather bail out of a mediocre experience pre-order than suffer through a middling experience. We only have so much time on the planet, right? And I too am a hungry ghost, haunting various cities and exploring the cultural and edible scenes. Oh. Right. Cassis. What can I say? If this place was up the street from me I'd be blowing through my kids 529 accounts on this delectable menu and incredibly friendly vibe. Feels like a hidden gem in The Marias. You know, just off the beaten path of L'al du falafel? Anyhow, this place gets it. The baguette? Crispy. The butter? Enough fat content to my my cardiologist blush. The steak frites? Perfect. And the scallop ceviche? Well, I almost moved my family to Calgary just to be near it.... Almost. Service was 1st class. Congratulations to this establishment for not underdoing or OVERdoing the French vibe. C'est parfait! read more

Always on point with their combination of perfectly executed French bistro meals, delicious cocktails and attentive service.

Daily special was amazing (salmon). Crossed over to the red wine dark side with Chateau Cos d'Estournel 'Les Pagodes de Cos.

Good food. Daily special was irresistible. Server suggested very nice wine pairing. House made iced for dessert was yummy

Mother/son dinner as my 15yo wanted to try steak tartare for the 1st time. We made reservations and were seated quickly. The place is cozy and had an understated elegance. Although a he's not a fan of capers he enjoyed the steak tartare. We both had steak frites. Mine with herb butter and his with a velvety peppercorn sauce. He also had aioli dip for his fries. It was an excellent and tender medium rare but didn't blow my mind. A bit of salt or flavouring on the fries would be a nice touch. Service was attentive without being intrusive. Our total was $143. Including taxes and tip. We didn't drink and I only had a tea. Overall, a very good place for an intimate birthday or anniversary dinner. read more

Our dinner here was heavenly! It is an adorable French bistro and everything is on point - being greeted in French, the music the decor and an old movie playing (no sound) in black and white on a projector. They have glass separating the tables and require masks in compliance with the laws and we felt very comfortable. Our waiter was so attentive and friendly. We started with the small charcuterie platter; amazing meats and house made pates so rich and full of flavour. My husband had the market fish.... and this was probably the best piece of fish I've ever had! I had the muscles and fries ; the broth was so full of flavour and it was a great portion size. For dessert we shared the lemon cheesecake (it was a pretty big piece) which was delicious and light for a cheesecake. I highly recommend trying this spot out! read more

I had an amazing dinner at Cassis Bistro!!! I highly recommend you try it out. My server Zara was excellent and makes one of the best Americano I have had in a long time. In fact, I ordered two it was so good. I had Duck foie gras torchon - house ginger bread Plat Pri Duc, Beef tartare au couteau and New York Steak Frites ending off with Creme Brûlée and 20 year old Taylor Fladgate Port. Had their housewine which paired very nicely with the Beef Tartare. Had a full body red and delightful light refreshing Chardonnay. Overall, the experience was as I expected. You can't beat French cooking for the best cuisine. The servers were delightful, the restaurant ambience was excellent, the candlelight's and background music made it magical. Treat yourself or others to this wonderful experience! read more

We came to Cassis on a date night while visiting Calgary. We made a reservation the week before to secure our spot. When we arrived, we were promptly seated after our vaccines passports were checked. The restaurant felt a bit claustrophobic since it was dark and every table was full. Our server went over the menu, offering her recommendations for the evening. We both decided on the duck special and croquettes to start. My fiance got a glass of wine and I started with one of their signature cocktails. I noticed that other tables had bread baskets with butter but our server failed to bring us one. When I enquired about it, she quickly brought one out for us without any fuss. The croquettes were excellent and we were glad we took the advice of our server to get them. My duck entree was cooked to perfection however my fiance's was a bit overcooked. After bringing it to the attention of our server, she provided us with some options right off the bat - he could get another duck entree, get something else altogether, or it could just be deducted from the bill. He opted to get the duck redone. It came back cooked perfectly. We were impressed that the server was very apologetic and offered us options without hesitation. This is probably the best service I've received at any restaurant in a long time! We will be back! read more

Amazing gem in Calgary. The food is fantastic. The staff is great and very attentive. I highly recommend.

Review #29 of Yelp's 30 Day Challenge 2012 Cassis was hittin' some home runs when it first opened. And now? Well... now, it's weathered the Calgary climate and has successfully earned it's right to my 5-stars (which are getting harder to earn these days I might add...). Consistently tempting me with daily specials made based on what's available in the attached market that day, Cassis always serves up something delicious. I remember one meal last winter, it was like -30 gazillion outside, and Gilles talked me into this duck shepherd's pie kind of thing. The ideal comfort food I believe he said it was. And he was right! Not that it took much to talk me into it. On other occasions, I've enjoyed the daily fish, or the moule and frites on special on Fridays (double check that, I haven't been in on a Friday in awhile). And of course, there's always some kind of dessert to tempt even the fullest of tummies. Always in a class of it's own, full of style and taste, you can't go wrong with the Southern French flavour Cassis brings to Calgary's food scene. Tip: Heading in on a weekend? Make sure you make a reso. Cassis is tiny and popular! read more

I've had lunch here a couple times now and the croque madame is soooo good. :) I also had a moules frittes today and it was a large portion and deeeelicious! This little French restaurant has lots to offer. Firstly, the service is excellent. All the staff & owner are very knowledgeable about their menu & take the time to explain any questions. Phenomenal, this bistro is one of the top places for me, the vibe, the atmosphere, the music, all just right. Outstanding service, very prompt. The food always speaks for the place, everything is amazing on the menu. I Always have the Tar Tar as a starter, and mains are all great, the duck, the steak-frites, seared scallops, and feature fish of the day. Great for any occasion, but nice for a Date Night. The cocktails are delicious, and nice selection of wines. read more

The chef is unaccommodating. He refused my simple, starch free variation to the steak tartare: slices of cucumber over Frito Lay potato chips. For the main, my host ordered the steak frites, as did I, but I wanted no fries and double the salad. My plate arrived with the regular portion of salad; my friend's had the same size salad, but his plate was overflowing with fries. I guess I learned who calls the shots at Cassis, and it sure isn't the customer! One risks embarrassment by taking an out of town guest to Cassis. Calgary has better, friendlier choices. Although the atmosphere at Cassis is pleasant enough, the food was only average: something I could do as well at home. And the service, though obviously under stress caused by the unhappy tyrant in the kitchen, was first class. read more

We were looking for a fine dining experience in Calgary for our 31st wedding anniversary. Cassis came up on a list of fine dining. When I booked our reservation on line, the platform asked if it was a special occasion so I selected anniversary. When we arrived, right away we were sat at the worst table possible right by the wait station. I'm not sure why they asked if it was a special occasion when they didn't even give us a decent table. There was a nice table available when we arrived too. There were flies all over the place. We had to wave off flies throughout our meal. We told our server that we wanted to take our time with our meal. We barely started to enjoy a cocktail when our appetizer arrived. We had the scallop ceviche which was nice. I had to ask our server for the wine list as my cocktail glass sat empty for some time. I had the steak frites & the best part of that was my salad. The veggies were nice & fresh. The steak was very bland. Very. My husband had veal & he said the same. The veggies were nice & the sauce tasted good but his food lacked salt. The veal was also fatty & chewy. My husband has worked in fine dining before, so we know what to expect. Unfortunately, this was NOT a fine dining experience on all levels. Take this restaurant off the Fine Dining list! Again, why ask if it is a special occasion when that occasion does not get addressed in any way? read more

At Cassis Bistro THE CUSTOMER IS NOT ALWAYS RIGHT. Went here for brunch with my parents, and noticed that every item on the brunch menu was loaded up with meat, cheese, or starch. My dad is diabetic, and watches his diet closely. He asked the server if the chef could prepare a simple vegetarian omelette. The answer was absolutely not, as our chef will not modify anything on his menu. Question two; could your chef at least remove the cheese from the omelette? Answer...NO. question 3...do you think your chef could slice up a tomato and charge me for it? answer...NOPE! There was one other table seated when we were there, so the chef here cannot say that we were stressing his kitchen with our outlandish requests. Also, simple brunch items are not complicated dishes, we were not asking him to modify a sauce or remove an ingredient that would compromise the integrity of a complicated dish. I believe the problem here is ARROGANCE, plain and simple. i think that this place could use some competitors as they are the only restaurant in the neighbourhood. Maybe then they would start to appreciate the people who are spending 80$ on brunch. This restaurant is off our list for future visits. read more

If you are looking to eat the best food in the city, look no further. I absolutely am not over stating... This is simple, fresh, expertly created/crafted, DELICIOUS food - period. Each time I sit down at this restaurant, my mouth waters with what awaits me. Maybe today the plat du jour is beef bourgeon, moules frites, or an omelette! I am never disappointed. The experienced, knowledgeable and lovely servers make sure you are always making the right choice for your meal and pairings. The cozy atmosphere has 2 experiences - the bright cheery, maybe you are in the south France, delightful feel during the day OR the intimate, energy filled, sexy, fun feel in the evening. You should make a reservations, but the amazing owners Gilles and Andrea try so very hard to get everyone in and will never rush you out of your table. This sometimes translates into some waiting, but your patience will be rewarded 10-fold!! While you are waiting you may be offered a glass of rosé or bubbly and most likely you'll make a new friend waiting with you. Come with family, friends, large or small groups, young or old - Cassis will make the experience more than memorable, I promise you. There is plenty of parking - either on the street out in front of the restaurant or on the streets in the neighbourhood, there is also underground parking for a small fee ($3.00) in which you are escorted at the end of your meal if it is after hours for the Marché. Get yourself over there! read more

3/5 on quality of food. I had the duck breast with mushroom gnocchi, the flavor of both was good but they came to me on the cool side of lukewarm and the texture of the gnocchi was so soft that they would have done better to serve me mashed potatoes with mushroom gravy. Not bad, but no-where near the top of the pile for good French Cuisine in Calgary. 1/5 on atmosphere. Honestly, it was the disconnect between the price-point and the (forced) casual vibe that killed it for me. If you're someone for whom spending $200.00 on a slightly better than average dinner for two in a loud, cramped, white-washed-walled room with a silent, black and white movie projected on the wall right in front of you, sounds like a good time - then you're going to love this place. Would not eat there again. Would not reccomend for a date. Can think of about 15 places in Calgary that I would recommend above Cassis Bistro at the same pricepoint. read more

Absolutely amazing food and great service. We came here to celebrate my boyfriend's birthday and it was a treat. It does get a little loud, but it's meant to be like a French bistro so be prepared. read more

I really enjoy European food so when I read about Cassis Bistro in a recent FFWD review, I was very eager to try it out. My last experiences with French food have been disappointing. Most of the French food in Calgary is usually very salty, fatty and served with a lot of heavy sauces. The FFWD review suggested making reservations... I did reserve a table for 2 for Friday night but we were late so we ended up waiting for a few minutes. While we waited, the owner (Gilles) graciously gave us a complimentary beverage of choice (I enjoyed a Rose Brut and my boyfriend had a small pint of Kronenbourg Blanc 1664, a white, lemony-tasting beer perfect for summer sipping) Cassis' menu is well-thought (not too many items) and combines simple, regional ingredients to produce simple, clean tastes on your palate. I like that their ingredients are available to purchase at Casel Marche (the adjoining market). To start, we tried the prosciutto stuffed calamari and the Alberta beef tartare. The calamari and bacon flavor of the prosciutto were a perfect pairing with the butter leaf lettuce salad and its light vinagrette. My boyfriend loved the beef tartare served with toasted pieces of thinly cut baguette: It had the right amount of acidity/ caper/ salty balance. Probably the best tartare we've had in the city! Our mains were also a great success: Manitoba pickerel with potatoes and green beans and chicken basquaise. Both proteins were cooked perfectly. Again, there was an emphasis on clean, fresh tasting notes and plating. The decor of Cassis compliments its dishes well; simple grey walls with framed photos of French landmarks and floating maple shelves adorned with French books/ decor and fresh flower vases. There is also a touch of humor with the projector silently playing French black and white films with subtitles on the back wall. Service-wise, Cassis reminds me of Una's style of "team" serving (btw, Una recently won best service in the city). Our waiter was attentive and pleasantly friendly. He made an excellent wine recommendation from the Bourgogne/ Burgungy region of France for our meal. Cassis is a great bistro for a first date, an intimate meal or a small group gathering. It definitely adds a fresh take on French food in the city. I look forward to trying brunch, lunch and another dinner (or more!) at Cassis. read more

The service was terrible, food took about 40 min to come out, the server never came around to ask if we needed drinks or anything else and we saw she was dancing in the back with another customer which was really weird. Also same server yelled at one of the other service girls in front of everyone to get stuff done which was really inappropriate and awkward. Once the food got to us steaks were well done not medium rare and the sides were mistaken but we didn't send the food back as we were just hungry at that time. Finally server asked about drinks but never got them to us. She was just ridiculously bad. At the end we left really upset about choosing cassis and will never go back. read more

A few posts ago I went on a rant about food in Calgary and how we need to demand better. I "might have mentioned" that Cassis was not really a bistro. I had eaten there once and had not given it a proper chance. Maybe I was just being a fuckerass that day! Last night I went back to enjoy a meal with my lovely wife before leaving for another medical conference. I was hoping to be blown away. I WAS! Cassis truly is what a "moderne" bistro should be. Modern and warm ambiance, delicious traditional french bistro cuisine. The menu is small and changes at very good intervals. There are no wines over $100. At least I did not notice any. The food is simple, fresh, elegant and melancholic... I don't know if any of you have watched the animated picture Ratatouille, I have many times with my son. Regardless, there is a scene where a food critic eats a simple, yet perfectly prepared ratatouille (eggplant, tomato and courgette stew: peasant food) and we see images of his past as a boy, remembering the feeling of safety and love his mother gave him when he was served that ratatouille. Bistro food should be like that... I remember mostly Italian cooking from my youth, but the sentiment of well cooked, simple things that make us feel warm and fuzzy regardless of wine should be in every bite! Cassis does this and does it well. MENU Tartare de boeuf Cassoulet de Canard et Porc Salé The tartare was remarkable. Very traditional and served with croutons and a raw egg yolk on the half shell. Extremely well seasoned... The menu mentions "au couteau" which means it was chopped by hand with a knife. It was. You can just tell the difference. All condiments and seasoning were chopped with it, giving the tartare a beautiful energetic taste. I do not normally like tartare... I would order this again and again as a main course. The cassoulet was excellent. Cassoulet is a slow cooked dish from the south of France. Different regions of Southern France have different takes on cassoulet, but they should all be a white bean based stew. This variation is Chef's signature dish. He has very good caligraphy! The cassoulet was tomato based, a very common thing in Southern France. The proteins where "EXTREMELY LOW FAT" salted pork and duck confit. ** Confit is a manner of slow cooking an item in a fat of some sort. Duck confit is usually duck thigh slow cooked in duck fat... Yup... Sounds disgusting!!!! Fucking delicious!!! We were eating some pretty bold flavors so we opted for a Bordeaux wine (CAB SAUV). I was really really happy when I left. Cassis offered wonderful food, and very expert servers, who know a great deal about what they're serving, and about their wine selection. This is no small accomplishment; too many restaurants want to "push" a particular wine, and servers often have no knowledge of food pairings. Cassis has this down to a science. Now for the negative: it is a small, packed place, and noise level is unbelievable. Much like when a live band sets up and overpowers the enjoyment of everything else, the din of everyone crammed into that small space made normal conversation almost impossible. Also, they have an interesting design element of a screen showing silent movies -- we were seated right next to the screen, and if you are the unfortunate diner facing the screen, you will get motion-sick trying to focus on your companion while attempting to ignore Yves Montand and his antics on film. I'll be back when their patio is open, or at a "slow" time when it's not quite so populated. I know they were trying for the vibe of a busy French bistro; when the noise level detracts from the experience (and the food), then you've got a problem. read more

I love this resto. It delivers in all the ways you expect, and reminds me of the 2 weeks I spent in Paris. Food: Delish starters. Try the steak tartare, tapenade. We had the pickerel (fish) as an entree, and it was cooked perfectly. I grew up eating fresh pickerel from the lake in Saskatchewan, but never like this! Excellent wines, good desserts. Service: Our waiter was fantastic and took great care of us. Atmosphere: We had our anniversary dinner here, and it was lovely. Not loud - we could hear each other across the table. It was not busy (Wed evening) so we were pretty much on our own for most of the meal, but if it was busy it would not be as private. Question: When it's very hot out, and you have a patio outside, why not turn some air con on for the diners inside? Sticking to the plastic seats was not comfy. read more

Great restaurant and have been there many times. Unfortunately this time, we asked to substitute pomme frites with scalloped potatoes. Our waiter confirmed they could do this. Great....so....steaks come out - with fries not potatoes. We inform the waiter who says "oh, that's right,...let me check on that"....20 minutes go by, then 30 minutes. No potatoes and our waiter is completely MIA. Then, we flag down the owner, who obviously does not know about our situation, and who then basically starts arguing with us. Telling us they don't allow substitutions. Telling us we should be happy to get such great steaks, and that that there are people "starving all over the world"!!.....whaaaaat???? I tell him when I order a $40 steak and confirm what it comes with,....that's what I expect. You don't argue with your client. It's poor form. Excellent food. Excellent atmosphere. The owner's arrogance ruined our evening with friends as his reaction and treatment was completely unacceptable. read more

Just finished my take out Three Course Birthday Dinner and it was outstanding. The best take out we have ordered during Covid .

Atmosphere manages to be quaint and classy at the same time, the service is very friendly attentive, and the food was amazing! I'm quite surprised that some reviewers have called the atmosphere pretentious, because I didn't feel that way at all. I was greeted as soon as I walked into the door and almost every time a staff member walked past me! And I was dressed fairly casually and if anything looked a bit bedraggled, so I know they weren't being friendly to me because I looked like someone "important"! It's quite easy to spend a lot because once you get a taste of the main course, you feel like you can't turn down dessert, and hey, maybe a glass of wine while you're at it! But, you know, once in a while you've got to treat yourself! Yes, the menu is fairly limited so if you have dietary restrictions or are a picky eater, you may not have many choices, but I think there's at least something to please almost anyone! read more

This has become one of our favourite restaurants in Calgary for special occasions. The service is excellent and the staff are very knowledgeable about the food. Had a very disappointing experience at Cassis last night. Running late for our 7:00 pm reservation, I contacted them to advise we would be late. Upon arriving at around 7:20 pm, we were advised that a table was just being prepared for us - curious since we supposedly had a table at 7:00. Asked if they had given our table away - given that we were late- they replied No. After about 5 minutes I inquired about the readiness of the table, only to be told to take a seat at the bar, the table would be another "two minutes". Being seated at the bar, we could see two tables already set up and empty, when I inquired why we could not be seated at one of them only to be told they were for other guests who had not yet arrived. When I again inquired about where our 7:00 pm table was, I then got: 1. Attitude about how I should learn to relax and enjoy my surroundings - why did I need to be so intent on being seated? Well, my reservation was for 30 minutes previous and I guess I would have been waiting that whole time, but I shouldn't be upset about that! 2. Told I did not understand about how restaurant reservations worked and was about to be lectured on it. I understand fully how reservations work - at least at every other restaurant, but apparently not here. All of this was compliments of owner / maitre d' Gilles. At no point was there a hint of apology or accommodation, but rather arrogance and hostility and out-and-out lying. Wouldn't be so bad, if this were an isolated incident, but this delay in being seated / reservation foul-up is a repeat of another incident earlier this year. It appears reservations at Cassis are for their convenience and not yours. They want you there at a certain time and will seat you whenever the next table comes available. It's too bad, as we have always enjoyed the food and the servers at Cassis. However, we won't be back. read more
