Stopped in for dinner on our 27th wedding anniversary and ordered the Seafood Platter for two. Service was impeccable as before, and the cozy, intimate interior was a much needed respite from the bustle outside.

Outstanding romantic dinner at the Bistro. The steak frites was cooked perfectly, sliced and drizzled with chimichuri butter. The seafood pasta dish was flavorful and delicious. We had some Italian Montepulciano wine that went great with the steak. And a yummy strawberry mango rhubarb cobbler for dessert. Everything was carefully prepared and beautifully plated

3 course set menu - crab and lemon zest agnolotti with a brown butter sauce and fried sage

This was one of the first places I wanted to visit when I arrived in Calgary! I walked in around 5pm and was told that they only had a set 3 course menu today for $45, so I figured why not! There were only a few tables in the restaurant at that point in time, but I was told they usually get busy later and you need a reservation. The servers were attentive, acted very professional and knowledgeable about the food. I had a set three course meal which started with a salad, and some chicken pate with a crunchy dried baguette/cracker. The salad was decent - lettuce, cabbage, beets, shredded carrots and almost a pico de Gallo style of tomatoes. It was generously dressed with a delicious vinegarette, but really was needing some richness like goat cheese to bring all of the flavors together. The pate was really flavorful and they put a pinch of nutmeg in it which was an interesting twist. They also gave at least 3 tablespoons worth which was awesome. For my main course I chose the pasta dish over the featured steak which was an agnolotti stuffed with crab and lemon zest and a browned butter sauce with fried sage. This. Was. Delicious. One of the best pastas I have ever had, I wanted to lick my plate clean. I wasn't a huge fan of the desert but I'm not really a desert fan to begin with (besides chocolate). It was an apple and rhubarb crumble with a butterscotch ice cream, mango purée and a mint leaf. At first the crumble was too sour and tart for me, but then mixed with the sweet ice cream it rounded it out. It was a well thought out dish. What I found in general about this restaurant is they serve very generous portions, not in size but in the quality ingredients. For example they gave more meat than the filler ingredients, which is great because you leave satisfied but not overly stuffed. Also they seasoned their food well with fresh herbs! Everything on the plate had a purpose and was beautifully plated. I will definitely be coming back when I'm in town again.

Cheesecake (part of $45/person Wednesday special)

I had heard great things about Vero Bistro before my visit and managed to secure a table for my boyfriend and I for their Steak & Frites Wednesday special - a 7oz 28 day AAA grass fed steak with chimichurri butter on a bed of white truffle parmesan fries with a salad and dessert to start, all for $45/per guest. We opted to upgrade to a 12oz cut for ~ $10 more. The alternative entree offered was a seafood paella! Drinks: My boyfriend tried the "new morning" beer recommended to us by our server who complimented the beer on the unique aftertaste. He really enjoyed it! I wanted a bellini but they were all out of peach puree. I was a little hesitant to order a different drink as they were all unfamiliar to me but one of the ladies made a recommendation and I enjoyed the drink! The two servers were both busy but attentive and personable. The salad was as delicious as it was unique. I never thought I would be caught dead eating a salad with beets in it but everything paired so well. The salad was a balsamic base with a hint of sesame flavour. The steak was tender and paired well with the chimichurri butter. The fries were delicious and soaked in some of the flavour from the steak/chimichurri. The dessert was amazing, a light but flavourful cheesecake with a delicious mango sauce. I would definitely return!

What I got: Set Course during the Big Taste event ($30-35) Pros: - We came as a large group of 8 people and found seats immediately on a weeknight. The chef offered delicious complementary meatballs, which was such a hospitable gesture. - The steak would probably be the best I've tried in Calgary. I've also been to Saltlik and what I liked about this steak was that it was small but well marinated throughout. Sometimes when I eat a massive rare steak, the raw tastes good at first but i start to get sick of it. Not with this one. - Fries were the best I've tried- crispy on the outside and soft interior. Wish I could eat more. - Salad was fresh and not soggy. - Dessert was beautiful and delicious. - I've also heard they do good brunch here, will check it out sometime! - Props to the chef, whom I heard was female! Cons: - For the first time, actually none. I've read that the wait times can be long and reservations are recommended. The space is small so I can see why it can fill up quickly.

Came here on a Wednesday night where they had a set 3 course menu. The server impressed us as she remembered the entire menu in great detail. I didn't plan on drinking so I had a peach purée beverage with white cranberry and soda. This was more of a breakfast beverage IMO. The choice for dinner was a salad or veal ravioli/steak frites or paella and dessert. I chose the veal ravioli in a sage sauce and the steak frites with garlic truffle butter. The flavors were amazing, rich sauce and the steak was melt in your mouth. I almost didn't believe it was steak! The chef sent out a dish of meatballs in a marinara sauce which we enjoyed, however there was a lot of meat and we would have preferred veggies (veal/steak/meatballs). Nonetheless, a kind gesture which was unexpected! For dessert they served us a chocolate mousse with mango purée. The level of service was great and we would return again!

We came here while exploring our favorite Kensington area. It was 11 a.m. Sunday morning and we're looking for a place to have brunch. This place was perfect. The ambiance of the restaurant is so cool. It's a good surprise from what you're able to see from the outside. They serve good quality food that's organic, very tastey, and good value. We had the Vero traditional- green salad, Croissant, 2 eggs benny, and bison sausage and the skillet meatballs that also came with a croissant. I also ordered their peach frizz which was a very refreshing drink. My husband loved his meatballs meal and I thought the whole meal was very satisfying. It's perfect for a brunch meal. Service was good with friendly staff. My husband thought, though, that having a chair in the washroom was a bit odd. But I think it's useful for the ladies. We'll come back here again to try other things.

Huge fan of the brunch here. It's a couple bucks more than the standard price, but the food is worth every penny and more. I ordered the eggs benny with boar bacon and two huge prawns. The hollandaise sauce was light and buttery, not that yellow glop you get at some places. The croissant was homemade and flaked apart in separate layers. The bacon was really crispy and shattered when you bite into it. All the flavour and none of the grease. The tomatoes tasted like they were just picked from a garden, dotted with pesto. The egg was beautiful, the yolk firm but warm and creamy. I liked the addition of the micro greens as it gave the dish a freshness. I like the ambience here. The room is small but you have enough distance from other diners. You can make reservations, so no obnoxiously long line-up! Woohoo! As good as it gets!

Love the huge bouquet of flowers, padded red background & authentic candles. And then there's the chandelier. Way to build an atmosphere.

Really nice atmosphere. difficult to find, the sign isn't quite obvious for some. It's a tiny place but very worth the food. I've been here several times now. Menu changes constantly. I especially like the red backdrop.and the huge bouquet of flowers near the bar, as well as the candles.definitely good for the atmosphere Tuesday is a set menu - you don't choose. Which can be nice

Vero is an intimate restaurant located in the Kensington neighbourhood. I was here for the big taste and the restaurant was fully packed on a Friday afternoon. I had to circle a few times for a metered parking spot but it was manageable. The appy platter which came with two bruschettas, prawns and veal meatballs was great. I enjoyed the porcini and truffle bruschetta the most - I can probably eat a whole plate of that by myself :-) As for the mains, I ordered the beef short ribs with sweet potato gnocchi. The gnocchi had good flavour and texture while the short ribs was tender and flavourful. My date ordered the mussels (the menu read: Fresh P.E.I. Mussels - cherry tomatoes, capers, white wine, lemon beurre blanc, grilled bread). In our minds, we thought it would be a bowl of steamed mussels but instead, it was 3 mussels on a bed of pasta. Maybe we should have asked. The dessert was nicely plated gelato with some purée, crumbs and a slice of dehydrated orange. Overall, a decent dining experience. I may come back to try their brunch.

Hot Skillet House Made Beef Meatballs – 12 hour Slow Cooked Berkshire Pork Ragu, 2 Poached Vita Eggs, Croissant, Arugula, Reggiano Shavings

Items Selected: Sweet Potato Gnocchi W Sunny Side Organic Vita Egg - Wild Boar Bacon, Gorgonzola, Walnuts, Maple Butter, Balsamic Reduction Hot Skillet House Made Beef Meatballs - 12 hour Slow Cooked Berkshire Pork Ragu, 2 Poached Vita Eggs, Croissant, Arugula, Reggiano Shavings Tiramisu - Ladyfingers, Mascarpone, Kahlua, Valrhona Chocolate Soil Located in trendy Kensington, the restaurant behind a frozen patio almost missed on first pass given its small size and signage far more subdued than other stores along the block, Vero Bistro Moderne was suggested for Brunch on Saturday by several sources and publications, Chef Jenny Chan's unique take on French-Italian cuisine said to be one of the city's most inspired ways to experience some of Western Canada's very best seasonal ingredients. Rumored to be popular during the weekend, a reservation thus made for 11:30am, it was precisely on time that I entered the front doors reading "Welcome to my heart," a man named Michael greeting me with "just a minute" before wandering away for more than seven, much of it spent kibitzing with regulars as patrons both entering and exiting were forced to squeeze past me in the chilly, tight foyer. Admittedly a bit annoyed when a young lady finally emerged from the back to seat me, Michael intentionally ignoring a stare from the door, it was with Coffee declined that water was filled and a menu presented, the one on the website completely identical and thus allowing for an expedited order. Finding the kitchen far more efficient than front of house staff, the sleek and narrow space run by just two, it was only perhaps fifteen minutes after an order was placed that two plates were presented, the cast-iron skillet containing nine Meatballs still bubbling hot beneath melted Cheese and golden Eggs while the mixture of Sweet Potato and more traditional white dumplings were each pillow-soft amidst nuggets of Wild Boar Bacon, whole Walnuts and Maple-infused Butter plus Balsamic. Eventually allowing the ping-pong ball-sized Meatballs enough time to cool, the majority smooth and rich though residual heat from the skillet had unfortunately rendered some a bit rubbery, an accompanying laminated pastry was fairly well constructed and nicely paired to zesty Yuzu Marmalade with flavors a pleasant prelude to Tiramisu served in a flower pot with well-separated layers of creamy Mascarpone and sopping-wet Ladyfingers beneath crunchy Chocolate 'soil.'

I've been on a gnocchi kick lately, so on my most recent brunch escapade with my lovely ladies, my heart and belly were set on the sweet potato and sunny side egg version that Vero had to offer. I was almost swayed by the eggs benny (which a couple of the girls did get) but had to stay true to my desire. Microgreens garnished a heaping of gnocchi (that was complemented with wild boar bacon, walnuts and a maple butter) and a bright organic egg. There was a perfect balance of salty and sweet, and walnuts gave the dish a nice added texture. Granted, it is a bit pricey here, but worth the splurge every once in a while you want to treat yo' self. You will not be disappointed with the atmosphere, presentation and service.

During that time no one checked in on us, or offered us any extra bread despite knowing food was delayed. Finally we asked our waiter at the 1 hour mark when food was coming and he said there were still 3 tables ahead so maybe another 15-20 minutes. After we finally received our food, the manager came and checked in. When we told him we waiting an hour he simply replied "It's a Friday night and we're fully seated. Thanks for waiting." Overall, the lack of empathy from the staff, the under seasoned pasta, and the overcooked risotto made this a very underwhelming experience. We will not be coming back. PS. Its reputation is glowing, and many of the old staff have stayed on. Also, we were celebrating one year out of hospital for Linda - a long road of recovery that has led to her feeling better than ever. The remake of this restaurant, just down the street from the original location, was as good as it can possibly get. It was an icon, and it most certainly is even more so today. The décor, the design, the layout inside - were exceptional. What a great place! And the vibe! It buzzed with life and enjoyment, at the perfect level so you could still hear and have a comfortable conversation. This is a happy place. The service, from a professional and happy server who had been with Buon Giorno for 25 years, cheerful and attentive, was excellent. We started off with a Calamari Napolitana as a shared antipasto. Fried and breaded calamari, in a spicy tomato sauce, exactly to our liking. Delicious! We agreed that this was the best fried calamari we had ever tasted - and we have tasted quite a few. For my main, I chose the Gamberetti e Capesante Livornese - or, if you like, the shrimp and scallops in a light white wine tomato sauce with fresh basil. This was wonderfully delectable. It made me very happy. The serving size was perfect. Linda chose the Cannelloni Fiorentina, stuffed with veal, prosciutto and spinach in a bechamel tomato sauce. Oh, she loved it! All the flavours were perfectly integrated. The serving size was a bit larger than necessary (a personal observation), so some was left on the plate, but it was as delightful as it could get. We finished off with perfect deserts. I have to say something about Italian restaurants in Calgary. There are scores of them. The new Buon Giorno is one of the very best we've been to anywhere in Canada. Buon Giorno is right up there with the absolute best. No, I don't know anyone who works there, or any of the ownership, nor do I have a financial interest in this gem. But I am interested in supporting exceptional local restaurants. This is one of them. We started with the agedashi mozzarella, which is this fried mozzarella ball with a japanese plum puree and soy dashi glaze. This is not what I thought it'd taste like lol. It was a bit salty and sweet, and the fried mozzarella was done really nicely. Even after it cooled down, it didn't harden the way most fried mozzarella does! We also tried the tagliatelle with Italian sausage rose sauce. All of their pastas are cooked in a Japanese seafood broth (dashi), so it infuses like japanese flavors despite the Italian forward ingredients. This was SO delicious - the cream tomato sauce, mushroom, and bacon merged with the dashi flavors that gave it such a nice umami and an additional layer to the usual Italian pasta. The gyogzana was the definition of fusion. This is like spaghetti with wagyu meat sauce, but replace the spaghetti with gyoza. This comes out bubbling hot with melty cheese - yum!!! We finished with the dessert tasting, which includes a Japanese black sesame tiramisu with azuki bean paste, yuzu gelee, and chocolate chiffon cake. The yuzu gelee was a nice tart finish to the meal with jelly textures, while the black sesame tiramisu tasted more like a creme brulee. So we were in a pasta mood and ordered the lasagna and the cannelloni. Sad news for the cannelloni: we felt they were flavorful, but too dry inside. Cannot recommend. The lasagna was very tasty, but for my liking it had very little cheese. We did eat all the portion though ;) it was flavorful. Italian cuisine varies from region to region, we were expecting a plate covered in bechamel for the cannelloni and there was none. So it did not meet expectations... but the pasta was good, home made, thin, and the sauces were flavorful... so a solid 3 stars for good quality. I do have to say that our waiter approached us to ask if all was to our liking, and only at the end did I disclose our disappointment... I didn't know what they could do to make it better...and we were so hungry we had already eaten half anyways... well in this they excelled as they comped our cannelloni and gave us a very good tiramisu to top it off! Definitely 5 star customer service!
