Gluten free empanadas! Got the beef and chicken ones but I could just make anything up since they all look the same outside lol
Sean P.

I accidentally came here. Friend and I agreed to meet at Cassava. She meant Cassava Cafe, and I went ahead and searched for Cassava on Google Maps and this restaurant came up. I ordered some food anyway for a quick lunch prior to heading out for Cassava Cafe since there wasn't going to be any food there. I love gluten and generally dislike gluten free foods. Substitutes just don't do it for me. However, I'm pleased to say that the empanadas here were more than good. The starchy chewy dough underneath the crunchy crust was a welcome difference from the flaky pastry dough I'm used to with empanadas. While I would still prefer the pastry dough, the filling for each empanada was very good. I had two: the beef & cheddar and the chicken. The beef & cheddar seems to be a favorite in the other reviews and it's easy to see why. Lots of beef with great seasoning with a cheesy zing from the cheddar. The chicken was also good with the sweet potatoes working well with the cassava crust. Two got me pretty full for lunch. For $3.25 per empanada (+$0.35 for the steak one), it's a pretty good deal for lunch at $6.50. They've got free wifi here as well, and I may consider coming some other time for studying / working but it seems like the other reviews agree that the coffee here isn't all that great...

Spinach and mushroom empanada. Delish.

I hadn't been to Wrigleyville in years, and while I was there, I decided to wander around like a meander around the neighborhood like a "Silly Old Bear." I had lived in the area in my first apartment in Chicago, within shouting distance from the ballpark (i.e., I could hear the fans; they couldn't hear me), but I'm not referring the Cubs; since cubs are young bears. I am, of course, referring to Winnie the Pooh, who will fairly regularly require a "smackerel" of this or that, in both cases referring to honey. My third smackerel that Sunday afternoon happened to be a single empanada from Cassava. I tried the spinach & mushroom and wow! That smackerel was lip-smackereling good. I'd remembered having cassava buns in Brazil that I enjoyed, but these... a completely new sensation. Very fresh ingredients, with the dough cooked to a perfect soft and chewy consistency, with the perfect sensation of garlic on the tongue and in the nose. When I was getting ready to leave, it must have been the Christopher Robbin in me who realized that I could use some tasty vitamins and fiber; so I got a dark berry smoothie to go, to consume while I continued my walkabout. It was delicious; I got it with coconut milk and it was the perfect accompaniment as I headed down Clark in the direction of Brazil. It's lucky that there exists a Yelp; otherwise I never would have gone into the place. They don't have a menu out front; so I wouldn't have had a clue what they served, and I would have assumed that whatever it was, that it was a sit-down restaurant. When I'm just looking for a smackerel of something, I don't expect there to be a smackerel server. They don't exist, outside of the Five Hundred Acre Wood, anyway. The consultant in me wanted to say, "Hey! You're doing this all wrong! You need to capture some foot traffic through awareness. It's as easy as a simple menu or news clipping!" But I don't work for free, and I try to keep my Sundays free. I almost bit my tongue to avoid breaking those principles; luckily I noticed the straw in my mouth and avoided a catastrophe. Then again, another empanada might have worked to soften the blow.

Celiacs!! Gather 'round!! A gluten free establishment for you to behold! All hail cassava! A lovely spot in Chicago to drop in and claim a gluten free snack. They have salty and sweet, baked empanadas. We had the pork, steak and cheese, spinach and mushroom, and an apple empanada. All were delicious. A bit pricey for the size. That would be my only complaint. I did not get satisfied. But I can be greedy. It was wonderful to see a GF dedicated bakery. My wife was in heaven. And happy wife= happy life! Thanks Cassava chicago!

So the owner tells me it gets busier in the afternoons and after work, and I sure hope he's right because the food was delicious. I enjoyed the place to myself this afternoon and savored my gluten free empanadas sitting in a comfy couch in the window while reading some of Michael Pollan's finest books. I felt a little guilty reading about "eat food. not too much. mostly plants." ....and here I was indulging in chicken & beef empanadas wrapped in a soft, cheesy crust. I didn't feel too guilty for long - so delicious and I bought an assortment of cassava rolls to bake at home since I didn't really need any more carbs at the moment!

empanada and hot cocoa

Since I was in the 'hood, I stopped in to indulge my sweet tooth. What better way than to do so during Yelp's Sugar High? I walked into a quiet cafe on a weekday afternoon. Sadly, they were out of the rolls I wanted to try. Namely the cheddar jalapeno... in fact their surprisingly small display case only had four items. I decided on a veggie empanada instead. Holy fudgsicles, the hot chocolate was rich, smooth, decadent... and since it was buy one get one free, I was tempted to double fist. No shame here and there was no one else around. My better judgement told me it was probably best to take the other to-go. The empanada was scrumptious, a tad on the dry side but much respect to their gluten-free-unprocessed-root-treats. There was nothing better than sitting with my book, sipping on cocoa, whilst snacking on my empanada. Once I was done I went back to the counter to pick up my second cocoa. Even after it had chilled down in its cardboard cup later that day, it was equally as aromatic and delicious post-microwave, said other lucky hot cocoa recipient.

Dining area and Bitcoin ATM.
Scott S.

They have grass fed beef in the empanadas and accept payment in Bitcoin. Comfortable atmosphere and good lighting make it an easy place to read or work. Don't have any Bitcoin? There's a Bitcoin ATM here! One of only a handful in Chicago to my knowledge.

We wanted to create a customized menu that would give our family and friends a more personalized, fine dining experience and Missy and the team knocked it out of the park - it was amazing! For cocktail hour, we had some fun bites - tuna tartare, lamb chops, shrimp, mac and cheese bites, but each one of these was easy to eat and had a modern update to them - our guests kept telling us how wonderful they were! For dinner, we did a plated meal with a customized first course. My husband used to own a farm and they harvested sweet corn. Missy and her culinary team wrote an entire first-course trio based around corn as the ingredients - everyone loved it! And for entrees, we had a choice of halibut or filet which were major hits - and the vegetarian option was out of this world too! Desserts seemed to keep on coming. There were so many bites, everyone kept taking more and more and more - and they were so good! And it all ended with Chicago Style Hot dogs for our out of town guests and walking tacos - let's just say, no one went hungry. Missy, you and your team did an incredible job making the wedding come together. It was such an amazing evening and we could have not done this without you and your team!

Blue Plate catered, staffed, and sourced tables, chairs, tablecloths, and more for our 340 person September wedding in Chicago. While our guests have been raving about the service and food, I have been raving about Leah Farrell, the sales rep we had been lucky enough to work with from the very beginning. Leah is professional, kind, intelligent, flexible and responsive. She was easy to work with and although there was a lot of moving pieces, she made the process enjoyable along the way too. Seriously, the food was so good. We had friends who joked it was the first time they went to a wedding and the entire table had completely clean plates after dinner.

We met Jamie at our venue's vendor expo and were immediately impressed by their services, pricing, and vast food offerings. It was a no brainer to book with their group! We had our tasting a couple months before our wedding day; which is complimentary to the couple and a $50 charge for any additional guest to join. They have you select 8-10 appetizers, 2 salads, and 4 entrees to taste at their Naperville location. They also have displays of china, silverware, glasses and more to help couples select what aligns aesthetically for their special day. Jamie worked with us to make small modifications to their standard offerings to make the food exactly what we wanted! Our wedding day came and we were floored by the quality/presentation of food, level of detail in place settings, and service from all staff members. We had multiple guests say that this was some of the best wedding food they've had, steaks were not over cooked, and food tasted fresh. Jamie also let us add desserts a week out to reallocate money from a couple of guests who last minute were unable to attend. Their team was even nice enough to service items not purchased through their group: disposables for the late night snack, display and refilling of cupcakes, etc. Overall, their group went above and beyond for us under Jamie's leadership. Our tables looked great, our food was wonderful, and their team was fabulous. We truly appreciate all they've done for us and could not recommend them more! Disappointing experience despite a fresh and new business relationship. We have used this catering…read morecompany for multiple corporate events and have spent considerable money with them. Historically, the food and service have been very good, which makes our experience with our most recent BBQ event particularly disappointing. The weather was questionable the morning of the event, so we understood the decision to precook the burgers and brats. However, the weather ultimately cooperated, and the event proceeded as planned. We specifically requested that we use at least one large gas grill we provided, even if only to keep the grill/char lines going, but that did not happen. The catering team arrived on time, but the setup was not completed as expected. Two chefs who had originally been scheduled to be onsite to cook the food ultimately spent much of the event standing around with very little involvement. More importantly, the food was served lukewarm to cold even though it arrived in hotboxes, and some food was undercooked/raw. The sternos were not lit until well after the food had been set up and less than 10 minutes before mealtime, which did little to address the temperature problem. For the price we paid, the quality of service and temperature of the food were simply not acceptable. I immediately raised my concerns with the event planner after the event. When I didn't receive a follow-up, I emailed to express our disappointment. To the event planner's credit, she responded and said the owner wanted to address the matter personally and would contact me after returning from out of town. That was over a month ago, and we have still received no communication. A coworker who also helps coordinate our company events separately contacted her point of contact at the company, but also received no response. What is most disappointing is not simply that one event did not meet expectations. We have been a significant repeat customer, and we expected our concerns to be acknowledged and addressed professionally. Instead, we received no follow-up at all. We have had good experiences with this caterer in the past, which is why this situation has been frustrating. Unfortunately, the combination of cold food, a lack of attention during the event, and zero follow-up afterward has made us decide to seek catering elsewhere for our corporate events.
