I think the staff is what really makes this place great! We were in town visiting relatives and they brought us here. Casa Morales is one of their regular places, enough to where their son has a special plate on the menu. :) I am a bit of a Tex-Mex snob, and have access to great Tex-Mex in Houston. So although I wasn't blown away by the food, it was pretty good for what I'd expect to find in a small East Texas town. I ordered the Wally Special- cheese enchilada with sour cream. The sauce and the thickness of the tortillas were a bit different than what I'm used to, but I still cleaned my plate. They were good, just very different. I really liked that they serve queso as part of the starters with the salsa, instead of it being extra. Also a fan of people watching since it is BYOB. I find it very amusing to see people walking in with coolers of Miller Light. Usually Ray's is my go to while in town, but this place is definitely a stop on our list now. :) read more

They recently advertised that they started a buffet, so we gave it a try. It was terrible. You expect a bit more from a business that is charging $14 a plate. For the two of us, it was $38. Be prepared to pay more than you expect. Good grief, a soft drink is $3.39, and you have to pay an additional 60 cents for a refill. If you order the lunch special but want chicken enchiladas, that will cost you an additional 99 cents. If you want sour cream sauce, that will cost you another $1.29. If you pay with a credit card, they charge you a surcharge (which is illegal to do in the state of Texas). I felt as if I was "nickeled and dimed" for everything. The drinks were watered down. There were only 5 tables but they barely checked on us. No one asked us if we liked the food which is food because the fajita vegetables were raw and the steak fajita meat looked and tasted worse than scraps I would give my dog. The extra pico was 2 tablespoons for $3 and entire ticket was $60 which was more than my grocery bill for the week. Ah-mazing food ! The salsa is as spicy as it can get, but you want spicier, they got it ! Nice lil family owned restaurant, with a very casual, friendly atmosphere. I am an eggetarian, and the Huevos Rancheros, Chile Relleno are yumm ! The cheese is just right, quantity spot-on, taste is wow !! The corn tortillas only last in your mouth until they melt . I always get more than my money's worth. After I moved to Lufkin, I was lost until I found this place to eat ( draamaa ! But dream come true), right by my workplace. Wow, what a great find in Lufkin. Excellent Tex-Mex! I tried the Eddie's Special, which was massive in portions. The crunchy tacos were awesome, and filled with the same meat as the enchiladas. I don't know what's in that sauce, but it's something special. Beans, guacamole, and salsa were also notable. Nothing too fancy about the interior decor. It's a big open space with lots of windows looking out to 1st street. Service was good. It's a family/friends type establishment. Take note: this place is a local's favorite. It WILL be busy at times, with spillover parking to the south in the yard! read more

Awesome Food! Awesome Service! We're greeted by a man in his forties with hot nachos and very nice salsa (tangy and spicy). This man answers all our questions and helps us with the order as we're new to authentic Mexican menu (than Burritos, Quesadillas and Enchiladas) - We ordered Chile Relleno and Quesedillas with spicy salsa. The second bowl of nachos and a spicy salsa arrive when we're about to finish the first. Both the dishes arrive in a short time and are really great with amazing spicy taste. Everything on the plate(Chili, Rice, Beans, Guac & Tortilla) tasted awesome!! Debauchery I'd say! This food is outstanding for the price - both quality and quantity. We finish our lunch with some real Sopapillas which were amazing as well. Overall it's a nice family run restaurant with awesome food with great price! The best part is their Salsa is available for sale. We thanked the owner, waiter and brought home a bottle of Hot Salsa! Definitely visiting again with more friends! read more

Casa Morales is a Lufkin staple. Most of my childhood memories of eating out are Morales. Special occasions, birthdays and trips back to Lufkin after moving away. This place is special for so many folks. Always a friendly face, great service and a feeling of being home when you are here. The food is absolutely amazing. Great little family-owned and run restaurant. Always a pleasure to eat here, everything is prepared in the kitchen, fresh, and can vary a little each time you are there, since the cooks play with the recipes a little. Staff is friendly, can tell you all about what they have, and have always been willing to get your order, or let you think about what you want. Enchiladas are my personal favorite, but there isn't anything that I've tried that I wouldn't recommend. First time customer, walked in had to wait to even be told by another customer that I can find a seat myself. Waitress kept looking at me and didn't say a word. Not a good first impression. Sat down waited and waited for water then chips came in... Waited and waited for salsa then waited and waited again for queso. Terrible service. Waitress wasn't busy there were few tables so there was no reason for this at all. Meanwhile everyone around us were getting served. Even people who came in about 10-15 mins after us got waited on first. I didn't understand why we weren't serviced first. Food was ok. Nothing special. Will not be returning. Need to add they charge $5 for the queso which was a small little bowl and wasn't told that it would be extra. In fact was told I should of looked at the menu. Waitress didn't advise that queso was extra. So I paid $10 for queso that sucked. Explained to both waiters that were present our concerns. They didn't seem to care. They were just like oh well. I was also told I should be grateful they didn't charge me $1 per glass of water. This place has terrible food , rude service and they just charge stuff to your bill. I feel ripped off. read more

I was very excited about trying this restaurant because I had heard so much about the salsa. I had friends in from out of town and thought I'd take them out for lunch. The restaurant was quite full when we got there. I saw 2 people waiting on tables. Actually it looked like one waiting and the other was bringing chips and salsa to the tables. We probably stood in the entry way for over 5 minutes before anyone noticed us. It took forever to get waited on. As I looked around, I could see large tables that appeared to be waiting and waiting. Once our food arrived, part of the order was wrong. The enchilada sauce had the taste of grease and I just can't say I was impressed with any of the other food. The salsa was good not great. The ONLY complaint about this local favorite is that it can get crowded and they are understaffed. But the food is outstanding. My kids will not come back to Lufkin without going to Morales to eat...and one of them lives in San Antonio! The food is authentic home-made Mexican and very hard to beat. The hot sauce is award winning (literally) but ask for the "other" hot sauce if you're brave. You have to ask for it and brother, it will set you free!!! I am a Lufkin native and have been eating here all of my life. (BTW, back in the day, it was Iona's, not Inez's.) It is by far my favorite Mexican restaurant anywhere on the planet. We visited here on a Saturday around lunch time. When we first arrived, we were only about the third table there and was able to place our order and get our drinks in a timely manner. However, then people started coming in right and left. There was only the one waiter. Despite letting him know that we needed more drinks on three different occasions, we never got a single refill. When you have hot sauce as hot as theirs is, you need refills. I felt a little sorry for him as I sat there and counted over 30 people he was trying to serve. However, it is poor customer service and certainly poor management that would allow their customers to suffer instead of getting additional wait staff. It is my understanding other members of this family owned business live next door and should have been called in to help. Needless to say, we wont' be so quick to go back. Gosh, I thought I'd already done a review on this place, but hadn't. One other reviewer said he'd "grown up eating there". I might can top that! In 1955 when I was 8 years old my family moved from Mississippi to Lufkin, and we moved into the one and only apartment complex in Lufkin at that time -- Pinedell Apartments, which is a two block walk from Casa Morales. In that location was the one and only Mexican restaurant in Lufkin, and it was called Inez's. Many a time I and my mom and dad walked over there for lunches or suppers. At that time, too, it was rare to see an Hispanic in Lufkin. Over the years (I am now 68 years old) I have gone back to Lufkin to visit my Dad and his second wife and family, and off and on I eat at Casa Morales. It's nostalgic and the food is fairly good, though honestly I have had "better" at many other Mexican restaurants around the country. Though I'm "white", I have eaten (Tex) Mexican food so much, it is just regular fare for me. The nice thing about Casa Morales too is that when I go visit in Lufkin I stay just down the street at the old used-to-be Motel 6, which has a different name now. It's old, but inexpensive. I will usually eat one breakfast at Casa Morales and get one take-out supper when I'm in town. Now, I am in the process of getting ready to move back home to Lufkin sometime next year, and am looking forward to eating out at Morales's more often! There are now a lot of Mexican restaurants and taquerias in Lufkin, with a quite large Hispanic community, but be sure to give Casa Morales a try. I'm sure you'll like it ! read more
