Came to try their mangonada. Street parking. This grocery store + restaurant combo seems very old school. Walking in feels like I walked back into the late 1990s, which is not necessarily a bad thing. There's just something about it, from the layout of the store to the staff and the general vibe. Anyways, it was my first time trying mangonada and I personally was not impressed but I had friends that liked it. The mangos wasn't ripe and it tasted like they had pineapples in it instead of mangos. I wasn't a fan of the sweet and savory taste of it. It had a bit of sweet, sour, salty, and spicy at the same time, which was not my jam. But if you are into that, this may be for you. Hope that helps. read more

This place is the real deal. Mexican with all authentic food. Baskets with assorted dried peppers, various corn tortillas. I ordered some tamales Mexican and Guatemalan style. Not everyone speaks English. I actually ordered on Facebook with ease, and there was someone who spoke English and translated when I picked up though I'm sure we could've gotten by. I'm really looking forward to trying their tacos. They have a small area you can eat in, or you can get take out. I saw someone else eating there and they looked great. Went there with hope and left with sadness. I ordered menudo which only had 3 pieces at most and a pig feet with no flavor and oily water. Besides that it was the worst I tried it was expensive, also ordered tacos and got some pan, very disappointed. read more

First time here cause I was hunting for MANGONADAS! I'm giving it 4 stars because I don't know any other place in Rhode Island that offers this! And it did not disappoint. I came here with a friend and would highly recommend the buddy system haha (forreal tho) I've lived in Providence for the last 10 years and still felt a tad uncomfortable because of random strangers soliciting and sleeping outside of the store. I came out happy as a duck though cause it was totally worth it!!! It's a convenience store/bakery/taco shop. Random two tables in the middle of the store to dine in. It's different for me to see because it's clearly a bodega but it definitely works cause peeps were waiting for their food. Sanchez Tortilleria gets 5 stars all the way! It's a tiny shop that I would have otherwise overlooked if I wasn't on a search for cactus pears. I found their Yelp page and called them 3 days in a row checking in to see if they had received cactus pears in their shipment. The staff was so friendly and helpful. I never once felt like they were annoyed by my daily calls. Even though the didn't get cactus pears in this week's shipment, I still ventured out to the shop for other ingredients. I had a bunch of questions as I was shopping, and they were helpful with every single concern I had. They directed me to the ripest avocados by the register as I was peeking through the less ripe options nearby, they explained what all the dried chiles were and helped me select a tortilla press. They even suggested a nearby shop I could try for my cactus pear search. All in all it was a really great shopping experience in an authentic Mexican market that would otherwise be out of my comfort zone due to my lack of experience shopping for many of those items. I will DEFINITELY be back next time I am searching for authentic Mexican ingredients at great prices. Maybe next time they will have cactus pears in stock! read more

That horrid stench that never goes away. I've been coming to this store since I was a child, and every time I would walk in, that uniquely gross odor would penetrate my nostrils to the point that I can vividly remember its scent to this day. The last time I stepped foot in this store was in September of 2013. I thought I'd pick up some "pan dulce" for my familia on my way back home. There was a box near the register with a variety of breads and I picked out what I wanted and the young lady behind the counter placed them in a brown paper bag. I paid for them and left. As I open the bag to pick one out to eat in my car, I closely examine the bottom and find MOLD on the bottom of each bread piece. I immediately go back inside and show the lady who sold them to me. She shrugged and handed me my money back. Needless to say, I will never come back here. Ever. La Poblanita on Academy Avenue is a much cleaner store. read more

They make torillas of all kind in house. I use their torillas all the time for tacos at home and parties. Best corn torilla you can find in PVD. In the back of the convenience store is a taco shop. I can honestly say this is probably HIGHLY RECOMMEND, especially if you love hole-in-the-wall shops. You also get free Pico de gallo, and homemade hot sauce (Rojo o Verde) as condiments! Great store with many authentic Mexican products that are very hard to find. I heard they had Day of the Dead bread and took a drive out there on my day off. I had to buy pan dulce (haven't had a decent concha in about a year), got some Mexican candy (bit pricey but I get it), some paletas (spicy cucumber popsicle-yay) and some Mexican sodas (hadn't seen "Squirt" in a LONG time). Stocked up for my Day of the Dead altar/offering. I wish they had more products (more variety of the candy, slices of 3 leches, etc) and we weren't greeted by anyone but I would go back 100%. Had 2 coupons for 2 free tacos each so we checked this place out. It is located in the back of a market with 2 large random tables at the end of the aisle. There is a large bakery selection and several food options. We didn't want to just go there and get free food so we were looking at other options to order. The woman behind the counter barely said hi, I gave her the coupons, she pointed to a sign and said 'beef or chicken'. We chose one of each and she went off into the back....ummmm...never said 'anything else'...so we stood there she put our plates on a table and walked off. Ok, guess we are just eating 2 small tacos for dinner. If you are trying to have people come in to try your food, why would you not try to make money off of them, have them buy other items to bring them back or even just smile and say hi. This place is my first go-to when it comes to satisfying my taco cravings. They have tacos for $2 and some pretty big, stuffed burritos for $4. My meat of choice is the carne asada, I noticed it's the one they prepare on-the-spot and trust me, they're not stingy when it comes to packing those burritos with them! If you want it spicy, ask for the brown sauce (I believe it's made primarily of ancho chili). Besides the carne asada I have tried the chicken and pulled pork. The chicken is just decent in my opinion, frankly I haven't ordered it enough to remember how it tasted like. The pulled pork is my second choice, beside the carne asada, though there have been times when it tasted just decent. I'm not sure if it's different chefs preparing it, or variations on how long it's been left out that becomes a factor, but most of the time that I ordered it, I can't complain! They also have homemade nachos there, an order is $6, though I believe they do a bigger (party) order for more if you ask for it. I will definitely try out their other options on the menu, as I'm prone to sticking with just their tacos and burritos. Don't let the storefront or location fool you. Being a huge advocate of yelp and reading other reviews about their tacos I had to find out for myself. I was little hesitant at first because the store is not your average Shaw's or Stop and Shop, and the counter isn't your traditional fast-food register. But once you get past that and take your first bite into a handmade taco or tostito all worries go right out the window. From the cilantro, salsa, and lettuce to the meat, and tortilla, everything has that home-cooked feel and served fresh on a plate with TLC by the friendly woman behind the counter. The flavors just dance on your taste buds and I always regret not getting four instead of three. Coming from NYC, these tacos go for 5.95 each, but now my wallet is thanking me for the move without the sacrifice in quality. The store is packed with great spanish foods where you don't find in a traditional supermarket. I grabbed a bag of tortillas on the way out and they are ten times better than that commercial stuff you see at the market. So go try it out for yourself, I guarantee you won't regret it. read more

Been here many times - as stated, the taco's are top notch, prepared at a little steam table in front of you. But - be prepared to wait sometimes. Why? Excellent selection of Mexican specialties. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff. We were searching for blue corn tortillas and stopped by to see if they had any in stock. They did! If you are looking for a big Mexican Market then this is not it. But if you are looking for things made fresh, I would go here. We discovered this by accident. The regular Mexican grocery store we go to was closed and had to find another one. Yelp found this for us and we were not disappointed. Inside the grocery store, there is also a very small restaurant. The restaurant is inside the store and has only two or three tables. My wife and I ordered two tacos, nacho, and a burrito. We were very happy with the quality of the food. They also make fresh pastries here as well and they are very popular with the locals. While we were waiting for our food to be cooked we saw five to six customers walk in off the street just to order their pastries. We did not try any but if the locals love it then they must be doing something right. read more

I'll be visiting Sanchez this weekend to stock up for Cinco de Mayo. It is the best Mex market for dried chilies, homemade tortillas and don't forget the fresh crema! What is crema you ask? Only the tri-fecta of cream: sour, heavy and cheese, and should be put on anything and everything. But please, let's keep this our secret. Their homemade mole sauce is delicious, but not always available. You can also buy their chips by the box... and I mean moving box size. This is handy for a party, which we've done many times. Don't forget to ask for their house salsa to go. They are happy to pack a quart of red and, or green to take home. No trip to Sanchez would be complete without sitting down for a couple tacos or tostadas and a bottle of jarrito. Enjoy! read more

This small grocery store saved me during my time in Rhode Island!! I am Mexican American and from Texas. Where i come from it is so easy to access things. I am so glad they have this store because they have everything you need if you want to cook spanish food. They have a restaurant in the back and the food is amazing along with the fresh bakery. Not sure how they have such 'great' reviews and 5 stars.... This place is not the best. I had to many high expectations.#1 Let's start with the merchandise. 90% of all the products they have are EXPIRED. yes and not just a month or 2 there was items as far as last year. I had to put everything back because it was all expired. #2The bakery. Pan dulce was ok. Not sure how long it was sitting there for. It wasn't the softest and definitely stale and it had an odd flavor to it. Had to toss all the pieces I bought. #3 the restaurant. The food was awful. Meat was very CHEWY and TOUGH. not to mention something in the torta tasted rancid. The bread for the torta was so thick it was all bread and maybe 4 or 5 tiny cubes of meat slapped with a very very paper thin layer of frijoles. And LOADS of lettuce might as well just had a whole lettuce for dinner. Mangonadas made by the younger kid were GREAT though. But other than that I wouldn't waste my time again. In search of the ultimate taco continues.... Went into Sanchez's market and made my way to the back of the store where they serve the goods. I was alone this time and not particulary hungry so I ordered 2 tacos, one with carnitas (pork) ,the other with chicken. They have about 6-7 items on the menu and it seems the several locals who were there were all enjoying the tortas. It does take a few minutes since the senorita heads out back to prepare the tortillas while you wait. So as for the tacos......... The tortillas were fresh and a perfect carrier for the filling of meat, cilantro and onion, plus some salsa. She didn't skimp on the filling, these babies were full, and only $1.50 each. I was slightly dissapointed in the filling. Both the carnitas and pollo were more of the "pulled variety" and seemed to lack a bit of flavor. Thy were very good, mind you, but something seemed a bit bland - maybe the cilantro, no lo se??? The two tacos and a bottle of water set me back all of $4.00 - what a value!! I'd like to go back and try a few more varieties before making any final judgments - but I would say that Sanchez's marlet is well worth a trip for some great (authentic) mexican fare. Its not a sit-down type of place but they do have a couple small tables. The search goes on...... read more
