Guacamole
Lucy M.

We stopped in here for a quick bite around 1pm on a Saturday. It wasn't busy. Our server was a young woman, not sure if she was new, but her English was limited. We order the guacamole- we requested for it to be spicy. It was beautifully made but lacked flavor and it was not spicy! Disappointed We had two margaritas - one top shelf and the other a skinny margarita.- I asked the server if the skinny marg could be top shelf- she stated no. I asked what the skinny marg was made with- she didn't know. I asked her to bring it anyway. Both drinks were good. We ordered a fully loaded nacho platter- the platter consist of ground beef, chicken, lettuce, tomato and sour cream. We order the queso blanco and some Jalapeño on the side because the nachos were lackluster. (I forgot to take a pic of it) Overall, cute restaurant and ambiance. I will go again only to try the fajita platter.

Birria tacos
Mike A.

I had the Birria Tacos (I think I spelled that right) and I must highly recommend them to you! It's nothing fancy, just three corn tortillas that are nicely seasoned with the birria (think au jus or French dip) meat inside. On the side you're given the juice the meat cooks in which is very nicely flavored l, chopped onions, diced jalapeños, and cilantro. Service was very quick, I expected it to take longer as it was lunch time on a Friday but there was no wait to be seated and the food came quickly as well.

Small guacamole

Visited on a Friday evening as I was randomly craving Mexican food. When I got there it was pretty packed, but I was seated immediately. Service was super quick and I was thinking to myself (gosh these people must be training for a marathon or something). Like service was THAT quick. I then noticed a sign on the table that said they have a 45 minute seating limit for guests and it all made since LOL. STILL, I give them their props because they were rolling and my entire order was correct, hot and fresh! Excellent service. I started with the complimentary chips and salsa, ordered a small guacamole dip and shrimp nachos. I also got the margarita special for the night. All for about $23. Everything was really good and I ate it all. The drink hit the spot as well. I will definitely be back!

Chips and salsa. Salsa was tasty.

We love Mexican food and this place scratched the itch. We got seated immediately. Our server initially brought one basket of chips for our table of four adults. He quickly saw what's up and brought us a second basket of chips and then a third. We were there at lunchtime and ordered off the lunch menu on the back of the regular menu. Two members of our part got the birria tacos. They both said the tacos were delicious. One member of our party got the fajita quesadilla and he quite enjoyed. I got the fiesta burrito. It was quite tasty. But I think it was supposed to have peppers and onions. I didn't detect any. It had the meat (I got steak) and tomatoes and quite a lot of a sauce that had more of a kick than I expected in the burrito. Not spicy, exactly. But it did have a touch of heat. But all in all, delicious and a good place for families. Not too loud. Plenty of seating. We will return.

Molcijeta for one!
Robin C.

We were camping in Southaven and ask a neighbor about where to find good Mexican food and he recommended this place. Boy was he right!! The food was delicious! I had the Molcajete for one. It was awesome!! Grilled jalapenos were so spicy! There was so much food, I had to take half of it home. Hubby had a steak burrito which he said was yummy. The fresh made guacamole was really good. If you're in the area, please stop by for some really good Mexican food! Yumm

My lunch here on a Monday was exceptional in every category I can think of. It's in a strip mall, but you totally lose that strip mall feel the moment you walk up to that enormous carved wood door that cost more than a slightly used BMW. They didn't stop there either. Beautiful carved wood doors for the bathrooms. There's even a castle inside, but it's a modern brick castle. They spared no expense to make this place nice, and it most definitely was not amateur do it yourself hour, this contractor did it right. It really impressed me. The salsa was a little thick and a little spicy, which are both good things in my book, so I really liked it. The chips were about average for me, but no big deal, they were good. From the lunch menu, I easily decided on a shrimp and sausage quesadilla. The shrimp were big, high quality, well prepared, and they stuffed it so that another one wouldn't fit. The chorizo was spot on. Lots of flavor, and just the right amount of that tasty chorizo grease. The beans and rice were just about average, but again, that's a good thing. I always say that Mexicans do it better than anyone else, and this was the perfect example. Food came out quick, it was so hot I couldn't shove it in my face, and the plate had been warmed in the oven, so it remained hot during the course of my assault on the meal I was presented with. As for price, I wouldn't have minded spending a little more for the extra quality, but I didn't have to. My meal was only $10 after tax. I definitely got my money's worth and I enjoyed it. That's really all I ever ask for. I'd say this lunch was 5 stars any way you look at it. If you don't like it, you can just walk your ass right on up out of here. Just pay first.

Super fajita Quasedilla

Really good lunch. Food was good, if a bit more spice than I expected on the shrimp tacos. Hubbys relleno was just right for him.

While this is not the best Mex. food you'll have, it is better than what you find around Southaven and Memphis. Service is pretty good.

El Agave Mexican Grill of Southaven - Top Shelf Fajitas

She did seem a bit busy and forgot about me a couple of times, but honestly, I didn't mind (this time)...I enjoyed the solo time to people-watch and savor my meal. I was seated near the kitchen alongside a group of younger waitresses, and the section filled with customers was mostly small groups and couples. Unfortunately, one young waitress (I'd guess around 18-20) was loudly using profanity, dropping F-bombs and openly saying she didn't care. It came across as rude and unprofessional, and I hope that kind of behavior doesn't become a reflection of the restaurant in the future. On a positive note, the lunch fajitas were delicious and a very generous portion. Despite the distraction in my seating area by the cussing, disgruntled young waitress, the food and my waitress's, Taniyah, friendly service stood out.

I have found this place to be pretty consistent in my experiences…read more Granted.... I have only eaten one item here myself. I have now had the wife and a kid come too. They agree with me on my point of view, so here we go. My first visit I was totally skeptical. I had read the reviews, which seemed overwhelmingly positive. This is other than the asshats who get mad when they spend 8 hours of their "hard earned pay", and the all time classic of they "ain't happy this time, after all these years, they pissed me off this time" two star reviews. Side note: Spread the love when you can, and write good reviews when you have good experiences. Don't wait and write a bad one after one bad visit. Ugh. You walk in and it's bright, loud, hectic, gringos everywhere! I knew from the drop, as soon as I walked through the door it's far from authentic Mexican food, but totally "Mississippian Top of the Sip Mex" ™. That's another new one, you can use that one, as long as you pay me. Contact me for details, we can work something out. My number is (662) 513-0796. Now that the legal stuff is out of the way. Resuming.... My first visit, when my completely American server walked up and greeted me I was offered a "MS TOTSM" gosh durn bible of concoctions consisting of the same thing repurposed to trick the high brow MS masses to believe they have choices. I had not realized El Agave and Tate Reeves had so much in common. Stay on track, Adam!! This is Yelp! One thing stuck out to me that you generally see in decent Tex Mex to real deal Mexican food where no one speaks English. Chile Verde!!! I asked her about it, told her how reluctant I was ordering it based on her and my current environment (that brought a look), and she all she just said was "try it", so reluctantly I did. Sometimes I just need a lady to take control and tell me what to do. I'm there eating chips and salsa all patient and stuff... Boom! What comes out looks like baby poo. We might be on to something here!!! Could it be? The pork tips were swimming in green salsa, which was promising. I take a chip and dunk it in the verde.... Here we go! It's tangy, punchy, sweet, and spicy!!! Now all I need is the pork to not suck.... Holy shit!! It doesn't suck! It's actually good!!! Everything else is an afterthought. Rice. Blah. Beans. Blah. They are fine I guess. Just the norm, but the salsa on the pork steals the show!!! I eat it all up! I've came four or five times solo on lunch shopping excursions to Tanger and my Verde has always been a winner! On the family visit, C had a taco and an enchilada. Kiddo had the famous P-10, or MS Mush as I call it. They both ate it up so it must be good. Kid even took the rest home and ate it later. I'll be back for my baby poo pork! You can guarantee that!! The restaurant is described as Latin/Mexican, though we noticed the kitchen staff didn't appear to be Latin or Hispanic, which stood out to us. One thing that surprised us was that chips and salsa are not complimentary. The menu itself is huge--burgers, quesadillas, bowls, fried fish, wings, and more--so it felt more like a mix of different cuisines than a traditional Mexican spot. We did order the chips and salsa, and honestly, that ended up being the best thing we had. For our entrées, I ordered the fried fish and my husband got the BBQ shrimp quesadilla. His quesadilla was extremely runny and messy, and the only flavor that really came through was the BBQ sauce it was heavily covered in. My fried fish portion was generous, but the flavor was just okay. I ended up eating only about two pieces. I also tried the blood orange margarita, which was decent but tasted like it barely had any alcohol in it. Overall, the service was pleasant, but the food and drinks didn't impress us enough to make us want to return.

I had a mole de pollo which was quite good. The mole sauce was very good, it had a nice subtle heat. We had our chips and salsa refilled which was nice.
