This is a great independent Mexican restaurant, it's always heaving so they are obviously doing a good job. I've been a few times and always had a good time and enjoyed the experience. The decor is cool it has loads of cool artwork and ornamental pieces and the candlelit ambience makes it feel warm and cosy. The food is good, the nachos extra are always tasty although I'm sure you could make the same at home, saying that they are great for sharing with a jug of Sangria between friends. I had a lamb dish from the specials menu last visit, it was okay, the lamb was well cooked and fell off the bone but it was over seasoned which took away from the flavour of the other ingredients. This place is great for drinks, the Sangria is Delicious and just like something you'd have on holiday. The margaritas are equally good and super tasty. We went with a group of friends and started on the tequilas (when in Rome), however the waitress asked if we wanted to try a different tequila, it was served with orange and cinnamon and oh my that was something special there, it certainly sent us off on or merry/ wobbly way! A lot more than just tacos and tex mex, Case Mexicana have a menu full of things I hadn't heard of. Good food brimming with flavour. Be warned, they're not scared of spices here and there's a couple of dishes that'll make your eyes water. As well as plenty of dishes that I hadn't heard of they've got things like fajitas and burritos. The beef burito's is filling and eating it is only a bit of a messy affair, recommended. With lots of red paint and warm lighting they've managed to do fairly well at getting something of a Mexican feel to the place. I think it's only the food that's got Mexican roots though, the approach to running the restaurant feels very British. There is a good selection of Mexican and they of course have Corona, so Mexican enough probably. If you're feeling adventurous ask for a Mexican cocktail and you should get something with enough tequila to make the rest of the evening pass in a happy blur. They do non-alcoholic cocktails, but I'm afraid I can't vouch for the quality of those. Casa Mexicana has brings strong central American flavours to Redland, quite a treat. read more

Casa Mexicana is one of those places everyone seems to have a good word for. Whether it's birthdays, romantic meals or family gatherings, the feedback is invariably glowing. It's not hard to see why, either. The restaurant has a cosy feel with warm colours, exuberant aztec-inspired art and fairy lights draped everywhere. The food selection, as is customary of most Mexican restaurants, is relatively limited. Not necessarily a bad thing as it removes the agony of indecision. We opted for the 'ultimate' fajita, which arrived speedily, steaming and sizzling. Tasty and generously proportioned, it could have done with a little more of a chili kick to really impress. I can't say I was blown away by my personal eating experience. We were shoved round a side corner and no other tables in our area filled up, creating a slightly eerie atmosphere and sidelining us from all the action. The service was at times a little slow (probably to do with the location rather than waitresses, who were mostly upbeat and cheery). That said, I find there's a dearth of decent Latin American eating options in the UK, so it's great to see a Mexican restaurant earning the popularity it deserves. I can see why it's a good choice for larger parties as well - margaritas and interesting but still relatively basic food in a good atmosphere fit the bill precisely. read more

After around a quarter of a century of belly-bulging service to the community, Casa Mexicana has earned a fond spot in the hearts, not to mention the stomachs, of many, many Bristolians. The interior is bright and immediately engaging, managing to be, somewhat paradoxically, both chilled and vibrant at the same time. The feat is achieved by the cunning layout which means that although they can easily seat well over 100 punters, the interior is split into several small caverns, giving a certain intimacy to proceedings. On the food front, I nearly always opt for the fajitas (which are served to share), though not wanting to tempt fate, I would recommend chomping on chicken instead of the shark which is also on offer. read more

Although I admit I was wary when I ordered, and my partner was not meaning his eyes were watering the entire meal! The service was lovely and friendly, as is the entire interior. It's well designed but maybe a tad garish. I did feel that it was slightly overpriced, however portion sizes are more than adequate so you won't be left thinking you wasted your money. This is my second Mexican/Tex-Mex review in as many weeks, which shows how much I love the cuisine. 25 of us went to Casa Mexicana on Saturday for a mates 30th. They set up 2 tables for us in the back room which was great as we had out own little area. That didn't stop us getting a few complaints though. We were a loud table from the minute we got there and unfortunately the tables close to us asked to move. A little embarrassing but it was a family with young kids - so understandable. The staff handled it perfectly though. They moved the other guests as requested and told us about it - but were in no way annoyed. They were completely understanding and if anything a little apologetic that they had to ask us to keep it down. The restaurant itself is lovely. Very candle lit with wood flooring and a real buzzy atmosphere. I just wish the food was up to scratch. I really wanted to give these guys a 4 star, but the food was bad and expensive for what it was. 4 of us shared the extra nachos as a starter. It was OK! Nothing I couldn't make at home. The small amount of meat lacked any flavour. Me and a mate shared a beef chimichanga and chicken enchiladas. The chimichanga was actually quite good, big bits of beef. The enchilada was terrible. The chicken inside was very dry, the sauce it was a bit watery and it had a BBQ type sauce on top of the wraps - which really didn't work for me. Each dish was around £13 each. My girlfriend had the duck which was really dry! We had such a great evening, the staff we fantastic and as a rowdy bunch we weren't made to feel awkward or in a rush to leave. Such a shame the food let them down! If you do go - have a tequila with orange and cinnamon! read more

Simply the best Mexican food in Bristol. This independent restaurant has a great laid back atmosphere that's as suitable for a quick lunch as it is a celebratory birthday evening meal. It isn't the cheapest Mexican restaurant but is definitely worth the money. I have been going for the last 10 years with friends and family and the food is always great. I can highly recommend the Nacho's Extra followed by the chimichanga, accompanied with a margarita or 2! Really great service and the friendly staff can accommodate bigger groups. In a nutshell, it's a nice place to go for a meal with friends, but the food will not set your palette on fire! The atmosphere at the venue is good and the decor is fine. The tables and chairs are a little on the small and rickety side, but I've sat on and at worse. The wine selection was good, maybe a little overpriced. The biggest disappointment was the food. For a Mexican, it was a little bland. Presentation could have been better. To conclude, the venue is worth a visit with friends. The location and atmosphere is good. I like my food and i like lots of it. Casa Mexicana are pretty good at the latter however they fail in really doing the first justice. It is hard to deny the slightly bland chain-esque atmosphere to the restaurant, which is aided by the pretty bland chain-esque food. There is nothing wrong with Casa Mexicana, but there isn't anything especially right. This restaurant has apparently been running since 1986. On my first visit i was impressed by the cosy, colourful decor and enticing aromas. The staff are friendly and polite and their recommendations were good choices. the variety of tapas is good and their prices are not too bad. My second trip to casa mexicana was a worse experience but i still had a good meal. Try the lamb shank, you wont be disappointed. Overall a good restaurant situated conveniently for me. Perhaps quantity over quality for a few of the mains but overall pretty good. Had a few problems with my big invitation club card so if this applies to you, ring ahead. Not bad read more

I really love mexican food and the food here was good. I loved the authentic Mexican feel of the place and they do a good Margarita. They serve a huge pile of nachos with all the works for starter and the fajitas come on a sizzling hot dish which is fun and a bit of a change! Sadly I can't give it five stars as the service was quite slow. Even though it was a weeknight and not very busy when i visited the waitresses kept forgetting our orders, e.g. for more drinks. After a while of waiting we eventually gave up on the waitress remembering to bring us the desert menu which we had asked to see and just left without one! I would give them the benefit of the doubt though and return here; the food was very good. read more

I have to say, I wasn't that impressed by 'Casa Mexicana'. The atmosphere and deco are okay, if a little tacky. The seating is small wooden chairs, which aren't great to be honest. I was there with a large party so we had to pay a deposit. This was forgotten from our bill, so we had to remind them to deduct it. As for the food, well, it was for me, pretty distinctly average. It might be that actually it was truly authentic Mexican food, and that places that taste nicer are using more English-favoured ingredients to make it tastier to our palettes, but losing authenticity. I can only wonder. Either way, my Chimichanga was poor. I also found 3 chicken bones in it, which put me off, and hardly any chicken. My partners Beef Burrito was better I admit and was full of beef. The refried beans were nice, a little spicy which was good. The nachos we had to share were poorly done. They were loaded to a point where the whole lot just went soggy after about a minute and couldn't be eaten with fingers. They needed more nachos and a more even spread of toppings.. or even to have the toppings as dip-pots. Overall, at the prices on that menu, it was 50% overpriced. The chimichanga I had should have been £7, but it was £11.50, which is overpriced. The most expensive dishes like the lamb shank were on for £14 I think, but apparently were much nicer. read more

First I tried to order Arroz con pollo, and was told a couple minutes later that they didn't have it. Then I went to order the special, and again they came back a couple minutes later. One of the UK's first Mexican restaurants, this is the original and best place to get your fill of fajitas in Bristol. The Mexican classics (fajitas, enchiladas etc) are top notch, but also try the more adventurous specials such as. As a transplanted New Mexican, I was excited to try a restaurant that was a bit of home. Unfortunately, the food was only a distant approximation of Mexican cooking. Mexican cooking is regional so there is a wide variation in traditional dishes that are called 'Mexican.' There was nothing I ate at Casa Mexicana that was from any region anywhere in Mexico. It was a tomato-based meal that was bland with none of the spice and/or kick of Mexican food. The food is passable if you are not expecting to be served Mexican dishes. Maybe it is due to the fact that it has apparently been in Bristol since 1986 and is to its credit (or not as the case maybe) the first of its kind. And by that I mean chain Mexican theme restaurant. In all reality however and by modern day standards it's a loud of rubbish and no better or worse than the McMexican style food they serve at Chiquitos. One of my favourite haunts in Bristol- Casa Mexicana is always I place I try to bring friends or family visiting from out of town. And my whole clan ate there the night before my wedding so it will always be close to my heart. It has been rated one of the five best Mexicans in the Uk and I think it easily lives up to this. The menu is authentic and varied so that it doesn't fall into the traps of cheaper Tex Mex eateries. Instead the decor and the flavour is less tacky and more Mexican than any other such place. It can be hard to get a table here at the weekends so I would recommend booking. But it's a great place just to grab a sangria, a margharita or another feisty cocktail if you are not up for filling your belly. Still if you have the chance to eat there take it. There's amazing Mexican tapas, a range of fajitas, enchiladas and burrito-style dishes plus the special dishes and a wide choice for vegetarians. The special plates place more emphasis on meats or fish cooked in delicious marinades. The wine list has an Hispanic flavour and lots to choose from and the staff are always friendly and helpful. read more

Despite the good reputation my visit was not a good experience. We were a group of 6 and we waited over an hour for our food whilst people who arrived after us received theirs. When it arrived some of it had been warmed up after sitting somewhere for a while whilst some was freshly cooked? The waiter didn't seem to know what some of the dishes were. This place is par excelence when it comes to authenticity its not for people who think Mexican food comes out of an El paso tin or packet, which I suspect most of the naff reviewers are. Being from America and having eaten my fair share of Mexican food I was extremely skeptical when I was invited to dinner with friends at Casa Mexicana. I was pleasantly surprised by the food and the atmosphere of the restaurant. I thought maybe it would be cheesy fake Mexican decorations and mariachi music but it was instead rather pleasant and relaxed. The sangria was strong and tasty, and the beef (might have been pork, it's hard to remember after all the sangria) was tender and well seasoned. The nachos were a bit disappointing but the main course made up for the average nachos. I left stuffed and satisfied by the whole experience. This is a great mexican restaurant just off gloucester road by the arches on zetland - and you cant miss it it is bright orange. The colur and theme continue inside where the feeling is fairly mexican and through a network of little rooms each with a few tables in, there is a really good atmosphere. I have always had a good meal here and it is a great place for vegetarians as there are a lot of options. The menu is extensive and the food is tasty with the usual mexican dishes on offer. I find the food really filling though so usually a shared starter and a main course is plenty enough and my partner finds the same. However, like others have found the service here isnt great and one of the waitresses even had the audacity to ask out my boyfriend when I was away from the table! Simply put, there's nothing unique about the food. I challenge Casa Mexicana to a blind taste-off with Chiquito and I'm sure no one could tell the difference. Here's a simple factA REAL Mexican place doesn't have potato wedges and calamari on the menu to try and cater to the masses. You might as well go to Chiquito if you want that! Wait, that's what Casa Mexicana is, but with a higher price tag. Their entrees are about two pounds over what they should be (This isn't London) and the flavour and quality don't match the price. The two times I've been there (Friday and Saturday), the service was lax and the food was cold. Supposedly The Guardian rated this place as one of the top five Mexican restaurants in the country. Who said The Guardian knew everything about cuisine. Either that or the standards for Mexican in the UK are terrible (which is not the case). Casa Mexicanaover-hyped and over-priced. read more
