We went to the restaurant after it reopened, and really looked about the same inside. Maybe refreshed a little, new carpet, paint on the walls. The service was very good. My two enchilada dinner I thought was very good, my wife got the chicken flautas, and although they were good, she felt that they had better elsewhere. We went for lunch, and was disappointed that there was no lunch menu. Compared to one of our favorites, Puerto Vallarta restaurant on the east side of town, the regular menu prices are 25 to 35% higher, and of course at Puerto Vallarta they do have a lunch menu with still large portions at about half or less of the price of Casa Del Rey We will give it another shot, maybe check out the bar side the next time, but it probably won't be in our regular rotation. read more

We went there to try it after the new ownership. In the past it was good. Not so much anymore. It didn't take us long to get a table but that was the best part of our visit. We received menus and water. Asked for a couple of minutes to look over the drink menu. Server did a good job and came back to take our drink order. After placing that is was about 10 minutes before they return with my wife's pop. At that time we were informed the bartender was a little behind with the drinks. Another at least 10 minutes later our drinks were served. In there at sometime, the server had brought us chips and salsa. We talked for a long while and asked at least once about our food to which they said it shouldn't be much longer. One couple who arrive about the same time received their food, finished and left. An hour and a quarter later, I ask for the check for our drinks since we hadn't receive our food. We needed to leave to go to an event we had tickets to and were going to be late if we didn't leave. The server apologize multiple times, said he would check again, and returned with our check. He said the kitchen was just about ready to start our food. AN HOUR AND A QUARTER later! This place, though the front desk staff was very nice and professional, the order was supposed to be ready at 12:20, I was there at 12:18, and the order wasn't ready until 12:40. I was excited Casa was going to live on! Owners promised same food. Not true. Salsa was horrible with a bad aftertaste. My favorite has always been the Original Chimi. It came and I swear it was all bean. I complained and they brought out a bowl of what they put in the chimi. It was a sludge that was 10% beef and 90% beans for a cost of $16.95! The original was not like that. You have a lot of nerve charging for that and claiming the same menu! You should have left it closed. I usually never write a review for a restaurant but after my first time here and I will not going back. Service was great, our waitress was very friendly and attentive. The food on the other hand was mediocre at best. Had the Carne Adovada Burrito which is served enchilada style. The rice was chewy with zero flavor, pork was okay and the beans tasted like they had been poured out of a can and reheated. Their enchilada sauce was a bit too spicy for my usual preference, with a over powering chili flavor. If you want an American version of a Mexican restaurant, this is the place for you. We came here on Sunday for the brunch buffet on Fathers Day. We had made reservations so got right in. We come here every year on Fathers Day and as always it was great. Food is amazing. The omelette and quesadillas bar is the best! Honestly best quesadillas I have ever had. Service is wonderful. Place was packed but the waitress hustled and took great care of us. I judge Mexican food by Phoenix standards which actually has served me well. Food is ok here, but lacks a distinct Mexican flavor. We ordered the guacamole for our chips. First the waiter said they didn't have any then asked again if we were having the small and then said they had enough for that. Then by the time we received our entrees we didn't get it. I assume he forgot. Staff is friendly though. Both my mom and I ordered the seafood torte. I assumed it was their version of a Torta sandwich but I really don't know what it was. It was more like a tostada hybrid of some sort. It had little shrimp or seafood. My mother loves this place and bless her heart, because I find this nothing more than an average place at best. Lastly, they didn't have any coke products for soda choices. This was the second time on my trip home I couldn't find Coke Zero at a restaurant. No biggie, but Pepsi products? On December 23rd, my wife and I decided to go to the Sunday Brunch at Casa Del Rey. The booth in which we were seated was right next to that of a couple that were speaking quite loudly. Of course, when one goes to a restaurant, one must expect loud conversations and noisy atmosphere. My wife and I dine out quite a bit and have no problems whatsoever with this. However, this couple was speaking so loudly that I couldn't hear my wife across our own table. Their conversation was earning them stern looks from others in our immediate area. After quite some time, my wife said something that I just couldn't make out, so I leaned aside and said, in the most polite way I could, "I'm sorry, sir. Could you please tone down a bit so I can hear what my wife said to me?" He stopped talking in mid sentence and apologized. We though no more of it. About five minutes later, the couple got up, walked away, and we had assumed they had left. A few minutes later, they both came back, sat down, and were followed by our mutual waitress, who quickly scooped up their drinks and plates and moved them to another table some distance away. While walking away, we could hear her speaking to the loud couple with statements that included "I'm so sorry....I know, very rude...Don't worry, it's not your fault.". We didn't see our waitress stop at our table for fifteen minutes after that, but noticed that she took great strides to avoid our table completely. A young man came to pick up our dirty plates, and I asked, "Where is our waitress?" He looked at me and said, "Who is it?" I asked him to go get her. When she came to the table, she simply said "More Iced Tea, or is that going to be it for today?" This was my wife's last straw. This situation had already upset her, but now the waitress's uncaring comment and false blame sent her over the edge, and she began sobbing, urging out things like "I've never been treated like this in a restaurant before" and "you have no idea what happened here", all while the waitress continued to make excuses like "this is a restaurant...we have kids running through here that are noisy...you have to expect some noise, etc." I walked my wife out to the car, then came back to pay and asked for the owner (knowing full well who that is). The man they sent out looked to be a cook. He said "You asked to see me?" Not letting him know that he wasn't the gentleman I asked for, I simple said "I wish to lodge a complaint." The is as far as the conversation went. He interrupted me, saying, "I think it's best if you just call it a day and don't come back." I said no more, and walked out the door. Not great. I got a combination plate, which included a hardshell taco, a burrito, an enchilada and the refried beans and rice. The taco shell was stale, and although the rest of the food was not bad, it was oddly flavored and a bit liqudy and loose. The beef was nicely flavored and the rice was fine. The beans tasted canned. The service was nice, but a dining companion ordered extra avocado and they put the dish right on the lettuce on the main dish plate. Ugh. The service was friendly, but I dislike sitting in a near empty restaurant with empty water glasses which they never refilled. I had the seafood enchiladas, and the flavor inside was good, but they added lemon to the cheese sauce on top and that completely overpowered the rest of the dish. My favorite place to have dinner. I travel to Sioux Fall several times a year. Great food and great service.

To preface the service was impeccable. We had a great waitress, that took wonderful care of the table. However, that is the only good thing I can say about this restaurant. The food was horribly bland, poorly prepared, and downright sloppy. As a Texan I may have high standards for my Mexican food, but this does not even qualify as Mexican food. The salsa was essentially tomato sauce, the portions were unbelievably small and very expensive. I had the pork enchilada torte, this was actually a lot of food, however they were bland and everything in them tasted like it came from a can. My husband had quesadillas and I know it may seem impossible to mess those up but somehow they managed to do so, the portion was laughably small and the conidments looked as though they had been sitting out in the counter for a week. My family will not be returning, and I would recommend anyone else looking for halfway decent Mexican food to avoid this place like the plague. Very disappointing from the moment we walked in the door met with attitude just trying to get a table. Informed my group would all have to be there before we could be seated so we would not be wasting space and tables in their restaurant. Granted there was was no one there barely. Then tried to sit in the bar until all 11 of us arrived waiting for a table. Informed by staff and owner we would need to drink if we were going to sit in there since this causes excess work for the staff to have us sit in the bar initially. The owner then told us we should have called ahead with the exact number in our party. We did call ahead to be told they don't take reservations. Then after waiting and a few more people in our party arrived told by owner we could finally be seated. This of course was breaking the rules of only being seated after everyone was present in my party. The owner blamed his rudeness and lack of costumer skills on Covid and being short staffed. I have loved this place for several years but more than likely will not be returning here. Kindness and respect go a long ways the atmosphere here was lacking both. One person in our party has significant health problems. He surprised us by even being able to attend to be treated so poorly. You might want to reconsider your RULES. read more

I am a native South Dakotan who has spent many years in the Southwest, eating Mexican style food near its source. To find something as good as Casa del Rey in the culinary boondocks of SD was for me truly astonishing. In addition to the excellent crispy homemade chips and salsa, they presented me with one of the hardest US-Mexican dishes to prepare correctly and did it with style, namely the chimichanga. A real treat, so often a disappointment! I ordered it "straight up" (as I always do), as I don't want it screwed up with some messy sauce that will wilt the crispness. And crispy it was, one of the best I have had in recent times. Super crunchy and with a really good spiced meat filling. Had to restrain myself from eating with both hands, as my wife was present.
