I don't recall being particularly moved by this episode of #partsunknown, by #anthonyboudain when it originally aired. No more than any other I assumed just another interesting place in the world I hoped to visit. Little did I know many years later, we would retire and move to Oporto. In fact the restaurant in Matosinhos he dined at is literally 5 short blocks away, we pas it on our walks to the beach. No longer tourists but ever grateful for however AB has informed, influenced or subliminally cajoled our collective psyches. We have come to appreciate the simple unadulterated pleasures of great seafood. While we chose a different restaurant, for this special celebration of family, it was nonetheless epic beyond all proportions. Perhaps I've waited far too long to quote AB upon seeing the platter of seafood put in front of him, "seafood platter bitches!" And even though we finished that entire bottle of homemade hooch "aguardente" and stumbled home the 5 blocks. Me apparently muttering incomprehensible Portuguese before passing out, I am forever grateful to have shared it with minha rainha and our oldest filho. Great atmosphere, excellent service https://youtu.be/9rC2jqflXNU?si=n-rNP38XsgpvfV-I

The service was good and prompt, we didn't have to wait long to be seated or to order. The restaurant well lit and seating wasn't too crowded. We were surprised that most, if not all the food we ordered were served cold even the soup. The main reason for this review is because of the 5 of us 4 got food poisoning from the oysters. As the only person who didn't get sick did not eat oysters. We exhibited severe vomiting, nausea and diarrhea for the days following the visit. Although most of us had recovered after 2-3 days with rest and otc meds. Our uncle has been severely ill for the past week and still under Dr's order to stay home.

The place was busy with guests and our server was nice, but a bit overwhelmed. It looked like they had too many tables to be serving to give the level of service they thought they were giving from a management perspective. We asked about the recommendations on their beef choices and our server tried her best to explain them. We opted for the T-Bone for two with grilled vegetables and mashed potatoes. The steak came and was beautiful. It was massive and pre-sliced off the bone-a nice touch. But as we made it through the steak, there was an inordinate amount of fat and especially gristle versus the meat for a T-Bone. What looked like it should be a "10" ended up being about a four. As for the side dishes, the mashed potatoes were truffled. I don't know if that was for panache or just because the spuds were kind of bland. The grilled vegetables were practically swimming in oil- so much so that you had difficulty putting your fork in some as they slipped away. There were no salads listed on the menu and I had to actually ask if there were any to be had. The server say there were and I ordered one that was nice. But I think (as I've seen in some Portuguese eateries) they downplay the salads because they'd rather not deal with them a la lazy. There were many other menu selections to be tried, but I didn't return for a second try. My impression was that they thought more of themselves than maybe they should and it probably applied to other entrees, etc as well.

It was cook medium rare but tougher than an uncooked skirt steak. After three bites I called it quits. Hard to believe a filet mignon could be that tough and flavorless. Also order the Gratin Dauphinois with bacon. Funny thing was, I couldn't find any bacon and barely found any potatoes. It was just a mass of coagulated cheese. My wife and I split the seafood ceviche which was flavorless salmon and tuna with a few bits of shrimp. Lastly, my wife had the mushroom risotto which had great mushroom flavor and it was loaded with a variety of mushrooms but it had an excessive amount of cheese which also made it extremely salty. From a food standpoint it was an utter failure. The service was fine and the ambiance was nice but the decor was quite cheap looking. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone.

They were able to accommodate a last minute booking & even sat us in the upstairs area to accommodate our stroller. It was definitely more of a Vegas feel than I was expecting, very "hip" think dark and loud music. Service was impeccable; truly never had to even lift a finger not even to refill our water cups. Some of the food was hit and miss, but the hits outnumbered the misses and truly tasted so good we can forgive the one dish that wasn't amazing. We ordered the shrimp tacos for a starter - weird interpretation of tacos with less than fresh/warm tortillas and deep fried shrimp that would have been better grilled or fried in a different coating. It wasn't for us. However, let me say the steak was fabulous. We ordered the Brazilian steak and the filet mignon - the bark on the steak was excellent, full of flavor and plays on texture. We also very much enjoyed the polenta fries. The cocktails were also very good (crafted) especially at such a reasonable price $10-$13.

The main uber cool feature of this restaurant is the massive outdoor grill with flaming hot coals,…read moredisplayed right outside the restaurant on the sidewalk. Yes, I mean, directly in front of the restaurant outside, in the middle of the sidewalk! It's where they flame grill your, fish atop a pile of red hot burning coals. Check out my pics.! There are several restaurants on this street with the same set-up, as this street is known for fresh seafood. Never have I seen a "cook-out" like this on any of the sidewalks in the good ole' USA!! I'm assuming there are huge safety regulations that would not permit this in the States. There are regulations for everything under the sun, except things that really need to be regulated. I would highly recommend any of the fish here, as this is what they're known for. We got a whole fish grilled sea bass to share, and they perfectly halved it, and deboned it for us. If you love octopus, or have never ever tried it, do it here! This was the most tender and huge octopus I've ever had, or have ever seen in as an entree! You've got to see my photo of this!! A massive, thick and long tentacle, simply, yet perfectly prepared with some olive oil, and accompanied by some potatoes with crispy skin! This truly was a dish of a lifetime, for me! Of course, we also had to get the fresh sardines, but unfortunately, they wouldn't be high on my list of recommendations. I'm not sure if it was because the two of us had ordered way too much food, or what, but I just wasn't a fan of them. Additionally, they were overly salted for my taste buds. Speaking of salt, that is why I'm giving this place a 4-star, as opposed to a 5-star rating. Depending on what you order, they seem to be pretty heavy handed on the salt. Not only were the sardines salty, but the tomatoe rice, which I newly discovered in Spain and loved, was so overly salted that we could barely even eat any of it. So disappointed by this. Had it not been for the inedible amount of salt they used, I would've easily brought it back to our hotel fridge and had it for breakfast the next day, as the portion of rice alone could've easily fed 6 people. Such a waste! The ambiance here is slightly upscale, and very pleasant. They brought to us the one waiter in the entire restaurant who spoke English to serve us, and he was great. It seemed predominantly frequented by locals, as it is pretty far out from the tourist part of town. It took us about 15 minutes by cab to come here, but glad we made the trip. I would definitely go out of my way to dine here for the food, and especially for the octopus entree alone. Learn from my experience, though, and request that very little salt be added to anything they salt, unless you're someone who likes adding salt to salted potato chips.

Good food and service. No complaints. One of the best meals in Porto. Worth a Uber rideread more
