Hrmmm... This school was was OK. The only thing I honestly…read morereally miss about this school is some of my old teachers and my counselor. I was in the magnet so whenever I needed assistance, I was helped out really quickly. Now that I'm in college I feel the way the regular kids felt since they had to go through waiting and long lines to get something done. Anyway, most of the food is disgusting and unedible. I loved being in the magnet but the school overall was turning somewhat ghetto.

Unfortunately, my time at Narbonne High School was disappointing. The school appeared more focused…read moreon securing federal funding through programs like the No Child Left Behind Act than on equipping students with essential life skills. As a result, I struggled in college and ultimately ended up under conservatorship. One of the most difficult experiences I had was with Mr. Waller, a history teacher who did not respect his students' First Amendment rights. He frequently imposed his political beliefs on his 10th- and 11th-grade students, encouraging them to be "Patriots" rather than "Kaepernicks." Personal political beliefs have no place in the classroom, especially when they make students feel alienated or pressured to conform. His lectures were hard to follow due to his fast speaking pace, and the classroom environment was often distracting. This made it difficult to take effective notes. Since his exams were primarily lecture-based, I struggled academically, which hurt my chances of being accepted into universities like UCLA or USC--places where I could have built valuable career networks. I also experienced bullying from a classmate, Daisy Mateos, who took advantage of my autism and gaslighted me. Additionally, I had difficulties interacting with another student, Karem Sadek, whose severe autism made social interactions more challenging. Karem did not respect personal boundaries--he failed to keep his hands to himself, and on one occasion, I had to run away from him. During a group yearbook photo, he placed his hands on my shoulders, which made me extremely uncomfortable. His influence contributed to the circumstances that led to my conservatorship, as he exposed me to potentially harmful topics like gun ownership and alcohol consumption. The school's bureaucratic system also posed a challenge. I often had to involve my mother just to get the support I needed, such as being enrolled in the right classes or switching teachers. Furthermore, I had an issue with Ms. Pascua, who refused to let me attend my speech therapy sessions, even though they were part of my Individualized Education Program (IEP). She insisted that Mr. Kobata did not allow students to leave without an office summons, despite the IEP team's recommendation that I attend these sessions to improve my articulation skills. This lack of support negatively affected my communication abilities. Another discouraging experience was with Mr. T, who advised me not to take AP courses because I planned to attend community college. Looking back, I realize that taking AP courses would have better prepared me for the academic demands of higher education. Peer pressure was another problem at Narbonne. My classmates pressured me to attend Grad Nite at Disneyland, warning me that I'd regret it if I didn't go. Now, in my 30s, I can confidently say I don't regret missing it. Ironically, when I attended California State University, Dominguez Hills, I was required to take a course on consent and peer pressure before registering for classes--something that should have been taught in high school. If I had possessed the knowledge and confidence at the time, I would have pursued legal action against Mr. Waller for violating my First Amendment rights and against Ms. Pascua for failing to uphold my IEP accommodations. For parents considering LAUSD schools, I recommend the following improvements: 1). Require Ableism Training for teachers and staff to better support students with disabilities. 2). Mandate Financial Literacy and Life Skills Courses--including laundry, cooking, safety, job interview skills, sexual harassment and consent education, and peer pressure awareness--starting in 9th grade as graduation requirements. 3). Consider Homeschooling as an alternative for students who may not thrive in traditional school environments. 4). Require Teachers to Complete a Public Speaking Course to improve their communication skills before entering the classroom. 5). Prohibit Teachers from Sharing Personal Political Beliefs in Class, ensuring that classrooms remain inclusive and respectful of all students' perspectives. Implementing these changes could help create a more supportive and effective learning environment for future students.

Sending our children to this school is the best decision & sacrifice that my wife and I have made…read more We have four kids and all of them have started there since TK and our eldest is now 21 years old with the youngest now in 1st. The school is administered by the Carmelite Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart of Los Angeles. We wanted a school that is strong in our Catholic faith and the academics are high, which this school meets and exceeds. The children are taught 1 or 2 grades above their current grade especially the 6th~8th grades. They learn things they will learn again when they enter into high school. Many graduating students get accepted to Catholic HS and other college accredited high schools in the area. They have invested in improving the technology of the school with use of iPads, Macs in the computer labs and large digital touch screens in each class room. Renovations have been made to the campus with a fully renovated restrooms and filtered water bottle dispensers. The security of the school has recently been upgraded with gating off the main entrance to the school, as well as the other side entrances to the back playground/parking lot. St. Philomena School is a small school & the friendships my kids developed are great because they grow up with each other with love and respect for each other. The parents become really close and it is like an extended family. Even new families that come in during the year, they are welcomed into this school family with open arms. I see and you will see on other reviews that are negative. I can comment to clarify things. In regards to bullying, the reviewers said that the school takes a blind eye, which is incorrect. Many of the bullying is by social media, which the school cannot control. They contact the platforms, but the platforms do not do anything and do not help the school to try to stop it. Bullying on campus, the school does try to remedy this with intervention with the students and parents, and if really bad, they get the LA county Sheriffs involved. I know of one child that was expelled for cyber-bullying and this kid was only in middle school at the time. In regards to reviewers complaining about the costs. Yes, there is a high tuition, but compared to other parochial schools in the area this school is much less expensive than those other schools. The school is not focused on taking your money. They have not dramatically increased the cost of sending your kid(s) there for the past 10 years. People complain about the tuition, well the school is not forcing them to attend the school, they can send their kids to public school. All in all this school is the best decision we've made and if you're looking to send your child(ren) to a parochial school, inquire with the school. They will be upfront with any questions you have.

Review #980 2026-046…read more Let me preface that this review is for an event that was held at J.H. Hull Middle School... J.H. Hull Middle School is 1 of 8 middle schools serving students in grades 6 - 8 in Torrance Unified School District. It's named after the 1st TUSD superintendent, Dr. John Henrich Hull, who served as superintendent from 1947 - 1970... at which time TUSD grew from 4 to 41 schools. Opened in 1970, JHHMS was originally built using steel portables from defunct Madison School, which closed in 1969; the school was later rebuilt & reopened in Fall of 2011, & is currently the district's most technologically wired & environmentally efficient campus. For 2025 - 2026, the school is helmed by Principal Jackie Ryan & supported by Assistant Principal Kimberly Lee. The 2026 TUSD "Math Field Day" was held at J.H. Hull Middle School, hosting the past 3 years. It's an annual competition that focuses on computational skills, conceptual understanding, & complex problem-solving while encouraging teamwork amongst elementary (starting from 4th grade), middle, & high schools students. Winners received medals & trophies for their school, & top winners from each quadrant advance to the Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) Math Field Day, usually held in April. My son competed for 1 of 4 spots representing Hickory Elementary's 4th Grade Team. It's a 2-part competition that consisted of an individual 10 question quiz (20-mins.), followed by a break, then a series of questions for the team (30-mins.), ending with an hour break while the scores are tabulated. The students loved the "trail mix" snacks that they got during breaks... my son says it was candy galore with trail mix, gummy bears, popcorn, M&Ms, chocolate chips, goldfish crackers, etc.!! And totally worth the after school hours to enjoy these treats (can you feel the eyes rolling?) & wants to come back next year. However, for many reading this have probably watched (let alone heard of) the hit FOX TV drama "Beverly Hills 90210" that aired from 1990-2000. This takes me to "Torrance High School"; you heard that right, the school grounds were actually filmed in Torrance and not in Beverly Hills. And for those wondering, this was also the filming location of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" amongst other various TV shows and movies due to its close proximity to Hollywood. Since I was in this area for a private family event, this was not out of the way for my lady and I. The actual location of this school is at 2200 W. Carson St. in Torrance that happens to be in a relatively quiet and less congested area. It is tucked in between Crenshaw Blvd. and Western Ave. while the major freeways (the 405 and 110) are about a 5-7 minute drive away. Since we visited the school campus in the summer (on Friday 7/26/2024) as well as after hours (at around 6:30pm), there were no classes in session. I must confess, after watching the show, the campus has not changed much over the years and am guessing that the entire structure of the buildings have remain intact ever since being constructed back in the mid-late 1940's. I also had the opportunity to peek through the windows of some of the classrooms and I can tell they've kept a lot of the same desks intact for several decades. Finally, the outside courtyard area looks exactly the same as where the kids from 90210 once stood during their recess. All in all, I was pleasantly surprised with checking out "Torrance High School". The layout of the entire campus is quite large as the school can accommodate an average of 2,000 students during a normal school year (grades 9-12). And to all of you Gen-X'ers that were obsessed with this show, you will definitely not be disappointed. Just don't visit during when school is in session. Otherwise, I highly recommend checking this place out. My rating, an above average four stars.
