The school prioritizes the football program, which brings in the most money and that favouritism goes so far as extra effort being made to keep those athletes in school. They do this by putting them in the art classes for an easy A (where they don't do the work and show no interest, while taking up the spots of students who actually want to take art) And by avoiding giving them expulsion or suspension, even if that means turning a blind eye when they bully their peers. Pretty standard for a high-school, I guess.

However, where SBCS leaves other schools in the dust is what they manage to achieve OUTSIDE the classroom. Class size allows the faculty to focus on EVERY student and their needs. No one gets lost in the crowd. That means if your child is dealing with any issues, they'll be noticed and get the attention they should get. This school is all about teaching to the whole individual. Learning to handle responsibilities, conflict, impulse control--the faculty have it under control. If you don't just want your child to grow up a competent math student, then this is where they should go to school. They'll learn how to be moral, caring, thoughtful, and self-aware people (who are also good at math or English or ...!). They've also had a new principal for two years now, Kirstin Born, who taught for twenty-five years before assuming the top position. You couldn't ask for a more savvy, sensitive, experienced person to guide the school. She bends over backwards to meet the needs and requests of her students' families. You won't complain about crickets if you approach Mrs. Born with any concerns. SBCS is great for any student, but it is a gift to students who need extra attention and personalized care in the hands of loving, experienced teachers and administrators.

However, for many reading this have probably watched (let alone heard of) the hit FOX TV drama "Beverly Hills 90210" that aired from 1990-2000. This takes me to "Torrance High School"; you heard that right, the school grounds were actually filmed in Torrance and not in Beverly Hills. And for those wondering, this was also the filming location of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" amongst other various TV shows and movies due to its close proximity to Hollywood. Since I was in this area for a private family event, this was not out of the way for my lady and I. The actual location of this school is at 2200 W. Carson St. in Torrance that happens to be in a relatively quiet and less congested area. It is tucked in between Crenshaw Blvd. and Western Ave. while the major freeways (the 405 and 110) are about a 5-7 minute drive away. Since we visited the school campus in the summer (on Friday 7/26/2024) as well as after hours (at around 6:30pm), there were no classes in session. I must confess, after watching the show, the campus has not changed much over the years and am guessing that the entire structure of the buildings have remain intact ever since being constructed back in the mid-late 1940's. I also had the opportunity to peek through the windows of some of the classrooms and I can tell they've kept a lot of the same desks intact for several decades. Finally, the outside courtyard area looks exactly the same as where the kids from 90210 once stood during their recess. All in all, I was pleasantly surprised with checking out "Torrance High School". The layout of the entire campus is quite large as the school can accommodate an average of 2,000 students during a normal school year (grades 9-12). And to all of you Gen-X'ers that were obsessed with this show, you will definitely not be disappointed. Just don't visit during when school is in session. Otherwise, I highly recommend checking this place out. My rating, an above average four stars.

There is zero tolerance for bullying. Students are well behaved. There is a wide range of after school extra curricular activities. For example: dance, ukulele, keyboard and robotics and many others. I'm a working mom so the onsite after school extended daycare is very helpful. I know my child will be cared for when I'm unable to pick her up right after school due to my work schedule. Our student did a tour and liked it, then did a shadow day and decided it was the right school for him. Ambassador has so much to offer. Firstly, a Christ centered approach to education with patience and mentorship. Many opportunities to be a servent of God in the community to help others. Second, outstanding academic classes with teachers who really care and support the students. AP and College prep is included in the affordable tuition fee with a wide variety of subject matter to choose from. Wonderful Guidance Counselors who truly walks the students entirely through the College application process from freshman year to senior year. Third, competitive sports in CIF leagues are offered with compassionate coaching that really guides the student to excel in their sport. Ambassador has been a dream come true for our student and our family. It ended up being one of the best decisions we could have made. At ECMSG, the Dean and his team did an incredible job holding my son accountable for his negative behavior while also recognizing and reinforcing his positive efforts. That balance truly helped him get back on track. Because the school is smaller, there is much more individual attention and staff really pay attention to the details. The supervision staff genuinely care about the students and build healthy, supportive relationships with them. On days when my son wasn't feeling his best, he could easily request a check-in with the counseling team, which made a huge difference. The office staff is always warm and welcoming. They consistently go above and beyond their job descriptions. The school also provides strong support for parents by clearly explaining the grading system and offering tutoring to help students stay on top of missing assignments. The Special Education department is patient, accommodating, and incredibly supportive. The Principal is highly involved not only with the students, but with the surrounding community as well. He builds meaningful relationships with the kids and truly listens to parents. He has an open-door policy and never makes you feel like your concerns aren't important, which was very different from our previous experience. Their outdoor education program is another highlight. The students learn hands-on skills and how to solve real-world problems in meaningful ways and we get invited to come hear the kids present on their learning.
