Barcelona started at a tapas bar where we chose tapas from a buffet in a rustic atmosphere of archways made of giant stones, Then a Barcelona tour that included architecture from the Roman era to Gaudi's creations and a view of America's Cup race in the Marina. A train took us to Alicante where we stayed in a Palace that was 100 feet away from the plaza full of sidewalk cafes! Paid a visit to the Miguel Cervantes tribute (Author of Don Quixote), the plaza, and marina. Next was Seville, where we took a tour and stopped at a Pizza restaurant -- walked around some landmarks, and prepped for our 4 days in Madrid. There we had an amazing Tapas and Wine Tour, visited Prado Museum, and other historical sites, and yes, discovered some amazing cafe/restaurants right around the corner from our hotel. Found the best Paella in Spain, discovered new wines, and found a restaurant "Jardin Secreto" overlooking the plaza. (from a list of hidden dining gems thanks to tour guide Patricia Willems.) There is no way I could have arranged or found everything myself. It was definitely a one-of-a-kind experience.

The owners did an incredible job honoring the desert beauty by restoring this gorgeous Moroccan inspired hotel that seems to nestle perfectly in the heart of town. You truly enter a little vortex, where everything you could need is on-site and within walking distance. The outside world seems to fade as you walk through the entrance doors. We celebrated a birthday as a couple where we indulged in a one night stay, in the King suite, enjoying the amenities exclusive to hotel guests. We dined at the restaurant, ordered poolside foods & drinks, sat by the bar, soaked in all the bathing areas, and enjoyed the little nooks to lounge. We stayed on a Sunday night and felt we had spaciousness from other guests and privacy to fully relax. Absolutely recommend visiting for an overnight stay as the exclusivity of hotel specific areas is a must to experience. The rooms are also gorgeous and minimalist by nature. The comfort of the bed and clean linens after a day of soaking topped it all! Truly had one of the best nights of sleep and wanted to do it all over again when we rose. As mineral spring connoisseurs, we were impressed by the cleanliness and purity of the waters. Truly healing on every level!! Maintenance staff actively were testing temperature, ensuring the waters remained comfortable and well-kept. Staff overall were helpful and kind. The restaurant menu was diverse and fitting for the setting--hitting the spot with flares of Mexican cuisine. The touches of healthfulness on the menu were appreciated. The pozole soup was warming and a highlight for visiting during the Winer season. Lastly, I can't forget to nod the eclectic and cozy bar, where we enjoyed live music and appetizers before our main sitting. The decor, bites and hospitality took us to another time and place. We intend to visit this hidden gem seasonally as it absolutely nourished and transformed our spirit! & Shoutout to Julie who made our stay unforgettable.

Be prepared to go about a mile on an extremely dusty, bumpy road once you get off the I-8 offramp. So don't wash your car before this trip. Many different ways of staying. I chose a room that was part of a small 6 room motel section, two of the rooms are wheel chair accessible with a ramp & wheel chair friendly shower. The narrow room was clean. Bed comfortable enough. Heater worked well when outdoor night temperatures went down to the upper 30°F's in late November. Price at about $160 per night was expensive considering it is basic accommodation in the middle of nowhere which was fine with me since I value quiet & silence. Close to Jacumba Hot Springs Resort which is rather classy and was my original goal since Jacumba Restaurant Caravan Lounge, where I was dining, was hosting a pop up dinner by noted Chef Brian Redzikowski. After dinner, I got to soak my feet in the heated, curative sulfur spring pool. Unfortunately, the rather large pool at De Anza Springs does not have those healthful sulfur waters. When I called by phone to make a reservation, Patty was very informative telling me: "There is no internet nor phone access at the locked entry gate to the property. So I should receive the new entry code about a day before the reservation date. If not, be sure to contact the main office which closes at 5pm." I assume that if you anticipate getting there after 5pm, it would be recommended to call the office before the 5pm closure to make arrangements for late arrival. De Anza is good for what it is. Basic accommodations that are adequate. Btw, great star gazing for those astronomically inclined. 3 stars

The boulders next to the tower are fun to explore and have lots of animals painted onto the boulders in the shapes of various animals. As you can tell we really enjoyed our visit BUT... The one road in and out of the Desert View Tower property is absolutely littered on both sides with (maybe) abandoned motor homes, shanties, and whole collections of god-only-knows-what! And the road itself is like driving on the surface of the moon. I felt like I was driving into a scene of "The Hills Have Eyes" (kids ask your Gen X parents about that one). Seriously... I thought we might be murdered and eaten! But if you're feeling brave, come well-armed, and are willing to pop a tire and ruin your suspension, it's a GREAT place to visit!

Hubby and I were headed to Puerto Escondido, which is very expensive and very time-consuming to fly to from the airport in San Diego. However, flight prices and times were much more reasonable from Tijuana. Thanks to CBX, we didn't need to find anyone to cross the border and drive us directly to the airport, especially as our flight departed at 5:40 AM. It was nice to have an easy drop off on this side of the border. Anyway, we were dropped off on the US side, and had pre-purchased CBX tickets online for $50 per person, round trip. I felt that the price was very fair for the staffing and amenities along the way. We had already reserved a rideshare to drive us to CBX, but I saw the secure parking lots and realized that parking there is also a valid, safe option. It appeared that some of the secured parking cost about $30 per day, making it a good option depending how may days you would like to park your car. Anyway, when we entered, there were people guiding us, as it wasn't too crowded at that early hour. You scan your CBX ticket, your boarding pass, and your passport. Then you are able to walk through the barriers. There are escalators and elevators to get to the bridge, and signs stating that there is assistance available for people with disabilities. The bridge was clean and air-conditioned. We walked through customs just prior to entering the Tijuana airport. When I had learned about CBX, I was reluctant. A friend of mine told me that she had walked much further in various airports. It is true. The walk is short and easy Upon coming back to the states, we learned that there were several taco and other food trucks on the US side of CBX, as well as Starbucks and a well-known mall pretzel company. All in all, I am grateful to have a way to access the TJ airoprt in a very easy and affordable way. I plan to continue to use CBX for more affordable flights south of the border.

I used CBX to fly from TIJ to San Miguel Allende 10 years ago, and recently to Cancun. Both times were uneventful, exactly how I like my airport experiences to be. You aren't just looking at history -- you're surrounded by ships that actually survived it. The Star of India, launched in 1863, survived mutiny, violent storms, collisions at sea, and decades carrying immigrants across dangerous oceans. Some sailors believed the ship was cursed after captains died during early voyages, yet somehow she survived long enough to become the oldest active sailing ship in the world. HMS Surprise shows the brutal reality of naval warfare during the Age of Sail. Ships like this once carried enough cannon firepower to destroy enemy vessels while sailors lived packed below deck surrounded by gunpowder, disease, and fear of battle. The Berkeley steam ferry even helped evacuate survivors during the 1906 San Francisco earthquake while much of the city burned. One of the most fascinating exhibits is the Soviet B-39 submarine from the Cold War. The inside is unbelievably cramped and gives you a real sense of what life was like beneath the ocean during one of the most dangerous periods in modern history. The USS Dolphin may have been my favorite. This experimental deep-diving U.S. Navy submarine helped test advanced underwater technology and launched the deepest-fired torpedo in naval history. The museum also includes the San Salvador, recreating the ship that explored California's coastline in 1542 -- long before America existed as a country. What makes this place incredible is the timeline it creates: 1500s exploration... 1800s global sailing... steam-powered industry... world wars... Cold War submarines... All sitting together in one harbor. This place doesn't just teach maritime history -- it shows how ships shaped exploration, immigration, trade, warfare, and entire empires.
