The Keiller Brasserie & Lounge - The best fish and chips you'll have in Scotland

Decor was modern and classy in the brasserie, while upscale and relaxed in the lounge. Both areas uses the same kitchen but have slightly different menus. We dined in both areas a few times during our stay. Brasserie is perfect for a special night. Servers were used interchangeably between both restaurants and were profesional and accommodating. Everything was made with care and with local ingredients. So the flavors were outstanding. Must order dishes are: Fish and chips ($18) - huge flakey piece of haddock perfectly fried to perfection with a light exterior crunch. We had a lot (10+ spots) of fish and chips around Scotland. And without a doubt this was the best. Usually fried items make me feel a bit heavy, but this was not the case here. Served with homemade tartar sauce, chippys and peas. Solid side dishes, but the star was the fish. The fish and chips is worth a trip of its own. Seared sea bass ($20) - a decent sized fillet with couscous and broccolini. The restaurant knows how to cook fish. And it really shows in this dish. Accompaniments were solid too. Especially the couscous. Carrot cake ($3.50) - moist, fluffy, carroty, with lots of walnuts scattered throughout, and a huge pile of cream cheese frosting. Not too sweet lol most English desserts. Gingerbread pudding ($8) - warm yet moist cake with strong gingery undertones. Every component was well executed and works so well together. The warm cake with the house made vanilla ice cream all topped with their rum toffee sauce. I'm dreaming about the day I come back for this. if u could get anything here, this dish would be the one to get!

TLDR: tourists should avoid or be prepared for frustration…read more Went there on a Thursday night at 8:20pm. We were told the kitchen closed at 8. No problem, that's on me, even though the hours published on their website don't list the kitchen closing during any certain times and their hours went until much, much later. Still, no real complaint; just the way it is. Fast forward to Sunday. I won't get caught short again; I have a foolproof plan. I'll call ahead. The discourteous person on the other end of the phone explains to me that their kitchen hours are 1115a to 730p. Thanks, we will see you before long then. We arrive just prior to 3pm and the same person I spoke to on the phone informs me that they simply have nothing available; reservations required. Now, this isn't posted on their website, but I understand that since it's Easter Sunday, they may have temporary rules for that. But how about this? TELL ME THAT ON THE PHONE WHEN I CALL AND ASK ABOUT TODAY'S KITCHEN HOURS!!! My bottom line in this place is that they may have great food, but I suspect that they just aren't tourist friendly. We will not give them a third opportunity and if you're here for leisure, I'd recommend that you avoid this place as well. Unless you draft an airtight questionnaire determining when they will deign to allow you to be seated for dinner. And maybe the hostess/phone person should be picked for her abilities to communicate in a friendly, approachable manner.
